 Description: The Denali Education Center campus was built in 1990 along the eastern boundary of Denali National Park, on the banks of the Nenana River. This quiet wooded campus, consisting of 12 cabins and Riverside Hall, was the first in the U.S. built exclusively for Road Scholar programs. All facilities are on the ground floor with four steps leading into each cabin. The longest walk from your cabin to Riverside Hall is about 200 yards on a gravel walkway, and the shortest is about 15 yards.

Room amenities: Our location is idyllic, rooms and services are simple. Each cabin at the Denali Education Center has one bathroom that may be shared by up to four people. There is no housekeeping during the week, though fresh towels are available mid-week. Rooms do not have clocks, radios, TV’s, microwaves, or hair dryers. All rooms are non-smoking. There are no phones in the rooms, though cell phone reception is fine. Emergency calls may be received in the office, as needed. An answering machine will receive calls after hours or when staff is in the field.

Facility amenities: Laundry facilities are available for $2 per wash and $2 per dry, laundry detergent included. Internet access is available nearby.

Day Two: Monday, July 22 - Hike Savage River Loop 
Breakfast: Riverside Hall

Morning: Travel 15 miles down the Park Road and hike the Savage River Trail. Meet the tundra plants, ground squirrels, and birds that live alongside the river.

Lunch: In the field

Afternoon: Learn how researchers track wolves in Denali. Practice tracking using telemetry- a technique used by wildlife researchers all around the world.

Dinner: Riverside Hall

Evening: Guest speaker TBA. Schedule for expert local evening presenters in Denali will be announced on first day of program.

Day Three: Tuesday, July 23 - Dog Sled Demonstration 
Breakfast: Riverside Hall

Morning: Learn about the sometimes surprising, always extreme, conditions that shape life in Denali and define a subarctic ecosystem in “Welcome to the Subarctic.” Everyone attends first hour of class, then grandkids depart for a guided hike on the Oxbow Trail while grandparents continue with class.

Lunch: Riverside Hall

Afternoon: Join your grandkids as they meet the four-legged heroes of Denali. Denali is the only park in the US National Park system with a kennel of working sled dogs. After the sled dog demonstration, see the park through a child's eyes on a guided hike along the Rock Creek Trail.

Dinner: Riverside Hall

Evening: Guest speaker TBA. Schedule for expert local evening presenters in Denali will be announced on first day of program.

Day Four: Wednesday, July 24 - Journey to the Heart of the Park 
Breakfast: Riverside Hall

Morning: Enjoy stunning scenery and wildlife watching opportunities on a day-long journey into Denali National Park by shuttle bus to Eielson Visitor Center. Grandparents and grandkids travel together to the Visitor Center at Mile 66 of the Denali National Park road and search for grizzly bear, moose, Dall sheep, caribou, and wolves along the way.

Lunch: In the field

Dinner: Riverside Hall

Evening: Free time to rest, relax, and unwind after an exciting day in the Park.

Day Five: Thursday, July 25 - Wildlife of Denali 
Breakfast: Riverside Hall

Morning: Learn more about the extraordinary animals that call Denali home and their marvelous adaptations to life at high latitudes in “Wildlife of Denali.” After the first hour, grandkids depart for a 4.5 mile hike with an elevation gain of up to 1800 feet while grandparents continue the wildlife class.

Lunch: Riverside Hall

Afternoon: Kids will eat lunch in the field. Grandparents depart for a two mile walk on the Oxbow Trail. After the hikes, grandparents and grandkids work together and put their new tracking skills to work on a boreal forest scavenger hunt.

Dinner: Riverside Hall

Evening: Guest speaker TBA.

Day Six: Friday, July 26 - Free Time together 
Breakfast: Riverside Hall

Morning: Grandparents: Explore the rich habitat of Horseshoe Lake on a 2-mile walk. Grandkids: take a 3-mile hike along the Triple Lakes Trails and work in teams to uncover the story of an animal that used the trail before you.

Lunch: Riverside Hall

Afternoon: Choose your own adventure. Grandparents and grandkids may explore the Park independently, or partake in optional activities, such as flightseeing, rafting, hiking, etc. (Coordinators will help arrange reservations for optional activities earlier in the week.)

Dinner: Riverside Hall

Evening: Program wrap-up.
