Description: Shallow Bay Motel and Cabins are located in the town of Cow Head, a small fishing village on the shore of the gulf of St. Lawrence, 115 kms (71miles) from Deer Lake airport. We are located in Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park represents a 1,805 km sample of Newfoundland western highlands and coastal lowlands - a landscape of mountains, fjords valleys, deep glacial lakes, coastal bogs, and wave-carved cliffs. Our accommodations consist of 51 motel units with private bath, 18 cabins that have two bedrooms, private bathroom and fireplace in each, and 8 B&B rooms. Facilities include a licensed dining room, lounge, sauna, laundromat, 18 hole mini golf course and on site meeting room.

Dinner: WELCOME DINNER: Welcome dinner at 6:30 p.m. in licensed motel dining room overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Evening: ORIENTATION: Program orientation and introductions after dinner. You are embarking on an adventure in one of Canada's most celebrated National Parks - Gros Morne National Park. Cow Head, a small fishing village on the shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, is our base and is located right in the park, giving us easy access to many of the attractions, historically and culturally, that this World Heritage Site has to offer.

Hiking to Western Brook Pond - Explore Deep Fjords/Western Brook Pond Boat Excursion/Hiking Cow Head - Coastal Newfoundland

Note: Western Brook Pond hike 6 kms/3.75 miles; Cow Head Hike 6 kms/3.75 miles. Rated easy, flat with gentle hills. 3 - 4 hours hiking.

Breakfast: Breakfast at motel.

Morning: FIELD TRIP: Western Brook Pond. Hike across the coastal lowland toward the dramatic backdrop of the Long Range Mountains and the landlocked glacially formed freshwater fjord of Western Brook Pond. We board a boat for a spectacular ride that winds through nine miles of 2,000 foot vertical granite walls and numerous waterfalls that tumble form the alpine plateau.

Lunch:

Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Cow Head. Hike the limestone coastline of Cow Head. Enjoy spectacular coastal views, look for fossils buried in this ancient rock and learn of a journey from hundreds of metres below the ocean to its present day location.

Note: Gros Morne Mountain hike to base & return 10 kms/6.3 miles. Rated moderate, groomed trail with elevation gains of 300 meters/984 feet. 3 - 4 hours hiking.

Breakfast: Breakfast at motel.

Morning: FIELD TRIP: Gros Morne Mountain. Gros Morne Mountain dominates the skyline and stands apart from the Long Range Mountains. A hike to the base of Gros Morne Mountain rewards hikers with spectacular views of Bonne Bay and the Long Range Mountains. Look for songbirds and moose as you hike through the boreal forest.

Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Continuation of Gros Morne hiking trip.

Dinner:

Evening: Free evening.

Day Four: Wednesday, August 21 - Hiking Bonne Bay - Exploring Coastal and Marine W...
Note: Bonne Bay hike 10 - 12 kms/6 - 7.5 miles. Rated easy, groomed trail, elevation gain 50 meters/164 feet. 3 - 4 hours hiking.

Breakfast:

Morning: FIELD TRIP: Baker's Brook. Hike across the coastal lowlands to an impressive waterfall at Baker's Brook. This trail meanders through boreal forest rich in summer wildflowers and offering great views of the Long Range Mountains.

Lunch:

Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Bonne Bay. After lunch explore Bonne Bay at the Marine Biology Station in Norris Point where we discover a truly unique ecosystem and are introduced to a range of species from cold water snow crabs to warm water cunners. Optional Sea Kayaking: If you prefer to discover Bonne Bay by sea kayak, our naturalist guide will lead you on a great marine learning adventure.

Evening: ENTERTAINMENT: Gros Morne Theatre Festival - Enjoy a evening performance of professional theatre - and experience Newfoundland culture/history.

Day Five: Thursday, August 22 - Hiking Philips Garden Trail - Discover Ancient Cu...
Note: Philips Garden Hike 7 kms/4.5 miles. Rated easy, flat terrain, gentle hills. 2 - 3 hours hiking.

Breakfast:

Morning: FIELD TRIP: Port au Choix and Philips Garden. North of Gros Morne National Park is the fishing community of Port aux Choix. For centuries the rich fishing grounds of this area were known to aboriginal cultures and Europeans. We learn of this ancient history and explore the coastal trail from Point Riche Lighthouse to Philips Garden. Along the way, we cross unusual limestone barrens rich in unique rock formations, fossils, and rare plants. Our hike ends at Philip's Garden, a site which for centuries was the most important Dorset and Paleoeskimo habitation site on the coast. Archaeological work continues today piecing together this fascinating story of human survival.

Hiking the Tablelands and Green Gardens Trail - A Geological Exploration

Note: Green Gardens hike 9 - 12 kms/5 - 7.5 miles. Rated moderate, rocky in sections, elevation gain 984 feet. 3 - 4 hours hiking.

Breakfast: Breakfast in motel dining room.

Morning: FIELD TRIP: The Tablelands and Green Gardens. Today we explore the Tablelands and hike the volcanic coastline of Green Gardens. Gros Morne National Park has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the geological legacy of the area and the blending of coastal lowland and alpine plateau. Our hike traverses an ancient sea floor and descends through a lush boreal forest to a coastline of cliffs, towering sea stacks and lush green meadows.

Lunch: Lunch

Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: We continue our exploration of the Tablelands and Green Gardens.

Dinner: Farewell dinner and activities

Evening: Evening Activities.
