Afternoon: After a relaxing break, you will go on a guided visit of the Angkor National Museum, which showcases artifacts from the Golden Era of the Khmer Empire. Afterwards, explore the Ta Prohm temple which is unique because it has been largely left as it was found: overgrown by jungle trees and vines, with many parts of the temple crumbling to the ground.

Morning: Travel to the gem of the Angkor area, the beautiful temple of Banteay Srey, which is best viewed in the warm morning light. The so-called "Citadel of the Women" was built between the 11th and 13th century and remains the best preserved temple in Cambodia. It displays some of the finest examples of classical Khmer art and this small temple is noted for its truly remarkable fine bas-reliefs depicting the Hindu god Shiva. Banteay Srey is unique because of the pink sandstone used in its construction and which is not seen anywhere else in Angkor. On the way back to Siem Reap, stop at the Landmine Museum where the museum's founder, Mr. Aki Ra, was a child soldier during the Khmer Rouge regime and is working today as a de-miner. The museum also serves as a rescue center for a number of landmine amputee children that Aki Ra has brought off Phnom Penh's streets or from impoverished rural communities.

Afternoon: Visit the legendary Angkor Wat. Built during the reign of King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century, Angkor Wat is constructed following the model of the temple mountain symbolizing Mount Meru, the home of the gods. Inside the temple, the walls are covered with stone carving and bas-reliefs depicting Hindu mythology and the ways Suryavarman II fought during his reign. Angkor Wat is well known for the more than 2,000 Apsara dancers decorating the temple. Construction is thought to have taken around 30 years of intensive labor. Today, Angkor Wat is featured on the Cambodian national flag as it symbolizes the soul of the Khmer people. You will be there during sunset, when Angkor Wat is less crowded and the Apsaras (female spirits) will shine in the most beautiful light.

Morning: Embark on a fascinating boat ride on the Tonlé Sap Lake, where you will learn about life on the lake. Tonlé Sap is South East Asia's largest freshwater lake and its size varies greatly between seasons, sometimes swelling up to 4 times its original size during the wet season! Visit the small village of Kampong Phluck where you will see houses built on stilts to protect them from Tonlé Sap Lake's ebb and flow. On the way, you will pass floating houses and impressive flooded forests.

Afternoon: Afterwards, visit the ancient city of Angkor Thom. This city was the last capital of the Great Khmer Empire under the reign of Jayavarman II. This city is surrounded by a 26 foot high wall, with each side of the city being 2.5 miles long, forming a perfect square. Enter the city through the ancient South Gate. Continue to the exact center of the city to find the Bayon Temple. This temple is unique because of the 54 towers with four faces representing the 54 provinces of the then Great Khmer Empire. The Terrace of the Elephants and The Terrace of the Leper King are also a must, as they are both known for their intricate bas-reliefs. Afterwards, partake in a very special ceremony in which Buddhist monks will perform a private blessing ceremony for you, wishing you health and safety during your journey.

Morning: Transfer to airport for 9:50 AM flight to Bangkok (estimated arrival 11:10 AM). Transfer to hotel. En route, learn about the city, its rich history, and Thai culture in general.

Afternoon: A visit to Jim Thompson's House is a must when in Bangkok. This beautiful, riverside, teak mansion was the former residence of Jim Thompson, the charismatic American silk millionaire who spent years filling it with priceless antiques before his mysterious disappearance in 1967. Situated near the museum is Baan Krua, a Cham Muslim village whose artisans used to weave for Jim Thompson.

Morning: An early start will take you to Wat Pho in time to experience the monks early morning chanting ritual. After this uplifting and often private experience visit the temple grounds and the famous 146 foot reclining Buddha. Continue to the Grand Palace and marvel at the mysterious Emerald Buddha, the most revered Buddha image in Thailand.

Lunch: Lunch at Supatra River House.

Afternoon: Enjoy an exhilarating long tail boat ride through the klongs of Bangkok to Nonthaburi in the far north of the city, where the cityscape turns into countryside. Stop the boat to walk through a bustling local market place and discover a riverside temple with an impressive reclining Buddha far from the tourist crowds. We stop for a fresh coconut juice and chat with the locals before cruising back into town.

Morning: After breakfast, escape from chaotic Bangkok with a short train ride to Chacherngsao, a lesser known historical town. The first stop is at Talaat Klong Suan, a 100-year-old canal side market. Marvel at the old shop houses and stalls selling a variety of items such as food, quaint old utensils, and ancient tin toys. Continue to Wat Sothornwararam Worawiharn with its remarkable resemblance to an Italian marbled temple hall. Take a boat trip on Bangprakong River to Talaat Baan Mai, another hundred year old market and Wat Leng Hok Yee - a Chinese shrine with papier-mache sculptures.

Afternoon: Transfer to MV Aegean Odyssey for embarkation at 5 PM. Late afternoon Road Scholar orientation to the ship in the "Observation Lounge."

Morning: From the Cambodian port of Sihanoukville, you will travel to the country's exotic capital Phnom Penh. With its fragrant markets, Royal Palace, bustling riverfront and monks in traditional saffron robes, this is a place redolent of an older Asia. After Angkor was abandoned in the 15th century, Phnom Penh on the banks of the Mekong River became the country's new capital. The city flourished during French colonial rule and much of its current layout dates from this time. Despite horrific suffering during the time of the Khmer Rouge, the Cambodians are a resilient people and Phnom Penh is once again a thriving and charming place.

Afternoon: After lunch, discover the majestic Royal Palace, with its Throne Hall where kings and queens once paraded on elephants or in gilded sedans. Visit the Silver Pagoda floored in over 5,000 silver tiles, each weighing over two pounds. This temple is famous for its life sized Buddha in solid gold encrusted with thousands of diamonds. * Please note that the trip to Phnom Penh is a very long day; those passengers wishing a less strenuous excursion can take the Sihanoukville & surroundings field trip instead.

A spectacular arrival in one of Southeast Asia's most exciting cities as Aegean Odyssey cruises up the Saigon River to berth in the center of Ho Chi Minh City. Your central location is perfect for not only exploring Saigon but also gives you the chance to sample one of the world's great cuisines (no visit to Vietnam is complete without trying a bowl of the local noodle soup, pho).

Afternoon: Called Saigon until 1975, this city is a potpourri of pagodas, modern towers and grand old buildings influenced by its French colonial past. Bicycles and motorcycles speed frantically past carts selling all manner of goods from loaves of French bread to crispy roasted ducks. Get acquainted with the city's incredible mix on this half-day excursion that includes a photo stop at the neo-Romanesque cathedral of Notre Dame. Built in the mid- 1800s, the cathedral is the focal point of the city center. Just across the square, visit the Central Post Office, designed by none other than Gustave Eiffel to showcase French colonial style. High vaulted ceilings, colonial furnishings, and period pieces accentuate the feeling of being in another place in time. In sharp contrast to this vibrant city's colonial past is the newly renovated War Remnants Museum. The grounds are dotted with an array of aircraft, tanks and other weaponry left behind. The museum itself extends over three floors and consists primarily of photos, all labeled in English, documenting the Vietnam War and its aftermath. From the museum, step into the lively world of Ho Chi Minh City today at the Ben Thanh main market, and find everything from coffee beans to bowls of the local noodle soup, pho. If you wish, stay behind to explore and later make your own way back to the ship. Just remember to bring some local currency for shopping – and your best bargaining skills.

Morning: Enjoy this Road Scholar field trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels in the Mekong Delta. Construction on these tunnels began in the 1940s by the Viet Minh and once stretched for 210 miles. They once contained extensive Viet Cong infrastructure including tactical quarters, storage rooms, kitchens, a school, and even an underground hospital. Most entrances were so well disguised that only a small portion of the system was ever discovered during the American war, despite the fact that some 125 miles ran under a U.S. military base.

Afternoon: Facing the South China Sea with the 13,435-foot-high Kinabalu Mountain as backdrop, Kota Kinabalu is the capital of Sabah state on the northwest coast of Borneo. Get to know this fast-growing city which was invaded by the Japanese Imperial Army in 1942. Begin with a leisurely drive through town, passing such landmarks as the gold-domed State Mosque, the floating City Mosque and the towering Tun Mustapha Tower before stopping to visit the longhouse-shaped Sabah Museum. Here, the Heritage Village gives an excellent overview of the traditional dwellings and colorful costumes of North Borneo's various indigenous groups. Next, stop by a water village for a short photo opportunity to capture the lifestyle of the Bajau people. The final stop of the day will be at Kota Kinabalu's waterfront market. Mingle with the locals, browse the displays of local produce, or shop for handicrafts before heading back to the ship.

Morning: Not only is the Sultanate of Brunei a state of great wealth due to its deposits of oil and gas but it is also a country of beautiful scenery with dense forests and steamy mangrove swamps. Brunei was a British protectorate from 1888 to 1984 and it is now an independent monarchy ruled by His Majesty Sultan Sir Hassanal Bolkiah. The large port of Bandar Seri Begawan is the nation's capital and here you will visit the Royal Regalia Museum with its remarkable collection of royal jewels, see the Sultan's vast residence and explore the local waterways.

Afternoon: Due to the distance between Bandar Seri Begawan and the port, you may choose to return to the ship for lunch and a peaceful afternoon on board, or you may opt to remain in the heart of the city for independent exploration. The local market is worth a visit, the Omar Ali Mosque lies nearby, and lunch venues are within easy walking distance of the bus drop-off / pick-up point. A return bus transfer to the ship will be provided mid-afternoon.

Morning: Immerse yourself in the exotic allure of this city, once the seat of the White Rajah Dynasty, where Malay, Chinese, Indian and Colonial heritages create an ever-intriguing tapestry. The centerpiece of this field trip is a visit to the renowned Sarawak Museum Complex, where you'll discover the Ethnology Museum housed in a colonial building reminiscent of a French chateau. Take the opportunity to explore your choice of several other museums within the same complex. Your exploration takes you to the narrow streets and colorful shop houses of Chinatown, where the Tua Pek Kong Chinese temple is the town's oldest building. Kuching means "cat" in Malay, and en route to Chinatown you'll drive past "Putih" a giant, white cat statue and the emblem of Kuching. Visit Tua Pek Kong Chinese Temple, the town's oldest building and in the fascinating Chinese Museum learn about the origins of migration from China to Kuching. Enjoy a guided stroll through Little India and finish your field trip on Kuching's lovely riverfront, overlooking the historic Astana, the former residence of the White Rajahs.

Morning: Disembark in Singapore. Today a full day field trip takes you to the three main ethnic areas of Singapore - Malay, Chinese and Indian. Your day begins with a visit to the Botanic Gardens to the Orchid Enclosure to admire one of the very best hybrid Orchid collections in the world. Then continue down fashionable Orchard Road to Arab Street. Arab Street is believed to be named after a noble Arab merchant, Syed Ali bin Mohamed Al Junied, and was a residential "kampong" for Muslims of Arab, Malay, Indian, Bugis, Javanese and Boyanese descents. We take a short walk through this area discovering the local life. The area includes many longstanding textile, carpet, basket and bag shops. Built in 1928, the Sultan's mosque is one of the largest mosques in Singapore and includes the Sultan's Palace, which is known today as the Malay Heritage Center. Moving on, we visit Little India, experience the hustle and bustle of the market place, and see Indian jewellers and flower garland makers at work.

Afternoon: After lunch, explore Chinatown and enjoy a short visit to the Hindu temple, Sri Mariamman Temple. Then explore the Chinatown Heritage Center to learn the story of Chinatown.

Morning: Singapore could be said to be the city that Sir Stamford Raffles built. It was his vision that identified Singapore as the perfect port for British trade and in 1819 he persuaded Sultan Hussein to cede it to the British. Singapore's fortunes flourished until it fell to the Japanese in World War II but, after post-war independence, the energy and dynamism of Singapore's people created one of the great modern cities of Asia. Free time to relax or explore Singapore on your own.
