Day Four: Friday, December 07 - Singapore, Singapore. 
Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel dining room.

Morning: Today a full day field trip takes you to the three main ethnic areas of Singapore - Malay, Chinese and Indian. Your day begins with a visit to the Botanic Gardens to the Orchid Enclosure to admire one of the very best hybrid Orchid collections in the world. Then continue down fashionable Orchard Road to Arab Street. Arab Street is believed to be named after a noble Arab merchant, Syed Ali bin Mohamed Al Junied, and was a residential "kampong" for Muslims of Arab, Malay, Indian, Bugis, Javanese and Boyanese descents. We take a short walk through this area discovering the local life. The area includes many longstanding textile, carpet, basket and bag shops. Built in 1928, the Sultan's mosque is one of the largest mosques in Singapore and includes the Sultan's Palace, which is known today as the Malay Heritage Center. Moving on, we visit Little India, experience the hustle and bustle of the market place, and see Indian jewelers and flower garland makers at work.

Lunch: Lunch at a traditional Chinese restaurant.

Afternoon: After lunch, explore Chinatown and enjoy a short visit to the Hindu temple, Sri Mariamman Temple. Then explore the Chinatown Heritage Centre to learn the story of Chinatown.

Here you will also find some older wonders such as the 19th-century Cathedral of St. Mary and historic buildings of Independence Square.

Day Eight: Tuesday, December 11 - Phuket, Thailand / Phi Phi Islands, Thailand 
Note: Please wear your swimwear before leaving the ship. Use of snorkel equipment and National Park entrance fees are included. Helpful items to bring are plastic sandals, toilet paper and small change for the bar. Operation dependent on the weather.

Breakfast: Very early breakfast on board.

Morning: Transfer with your Road Scholar group to Yangon's Mingalardon airport for a 6:30 AM flight to Bagan (estimated arrival 7:20 AM). With thousands of ancient stupas and temples, Bagan is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in Asia. From the 11th to the 13th century, when Bagan was the capital of Myanmar, the rulers constructed huge stupas and temples, many of which are still standing today on the banks of the Irrawaddy River. Upon arrival, you will take in the stunning, panoramic views from Tayoke Pyay. While at the Shwezigon Pagoda, learn about the Burmese belief in Nats, or spirits, which was officially replaced by Buddhism in the 12th century, but continues to the present. Also visit the nearby Wetkyi-In Gubyaukgyi, a cave temple with exquisite "jakata" mural paintings and the elegant Htilominlo Temple noted for its fine plaster carvings and glazed sandstone decorations.

Lunch: Lunch at the Sunset Garden restaurant overlooking the river.

Afternoon: After lunch, transfer to the hotel for check-in before continuing with an afternoon excursion. The afternoon excursion begins with a visit to the Ananda temple, an excellent example of early-style Bagan architecture. Nearby Ananda Okkyaung is one of the few surviving brick monasteries from the early Bagan period. Pass through Thatbyinnyu, the highest temple in Bagan, and the massive Dhammayangyi Temple noted for its remarkable brickwork.

Afterwards, stroll through Boyoke Market, formerly known as Scott Market, which offers a wide variety of Myanmar handicrafts and other goods.

Afternoon: Visit the awe-inspiring golden Shwedagon Pagoda with its 98-meter high stupa that is covered in genuine gold plates (these are donated by ordinary Myanmar people from all over the country): it is truly a remarkable sight. You will spend the morning exploring the island on a guided field trip.

Morning: Not only is the Sultanate of Brunei a state of great wealth due to its deposits of oil and gas but it is also a country of beautiful scenery with dense forests and steamy mangrove swamps. Brunei was a British protectorate from 1888 to 1984 and it is now an independent monarchy ruled by His Majesty Sultan Sir Hassanal Bolkiah. The large port of Bandar Seri Begawan is the nation's capital and here you will visit the Royal Regalia Museum with its remarkable collection of royal jewels, see the Sultan's vast residence and explore the local waterways.

Morning: Depart with your Road Scholar group for Cai Be, deep in the heart of the Mekong Delta. En route stop at the Cao Dai, a temple of the Cao Dai religion which is a fusion of Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, native Vietnamese Spiritualism, Christianity, and Islam. Continue to Cai Be and embark on a private boat to cruise the colorful Cai Be floating market and try bargaining and exchanging goods with local traders. Later, row through the beautiful channels of Tan Phong island on smaller boats and try your hand at net-fishing.

Afternoon: Continue by boat to visit a handicraft village. Awaken your inner chef during a presentation on traditional methods for making fish sauce, rice-nets for spring rolls, and cooking salt. Learn the method for sewing coconut leaves together for traditional cottages.

Note: Please cover arms, shoulders and knees. It is recommended to wear socks as it is required to remove shoes at the Silver Pagoda. Museum photography is allowed only in the courtyard. Backpacks are not permitted in the Royal Palace. On occasion, the palace closes at short notice. If this occurs, the temple will be combined with a visit to the Central Market.

Morning: From the Cambodian port of Sihanoukville, you will travel to the country's exotic capital Phnom Penh. With its fragrant markets, Royal Palace, bustling riverfront and monks in traditional saffron robes, this is a place redolent of an older Asia. After Angkor was abandoned in the 15th century, Phnom Penh on the banks of the Mekong River became the country's new capital. The city flourished during French colonial rule and much of its current layout dates from this time. Despite horrific suffering during the time of the Khmer Rouge, the Cambodians are a resilient people and Phnom Penh is once again a thriving and charming place.

Today, some of the original weaving families still remain and welcome visitors to learn about their history and silk traditions. Afternoon: Field trip to the Angkor National Museum, which showcases artifacts from the Golden Era of the Khmer Empire. Then explore the Ta Prohm temple which is unique because it has been largely left as it was found: overgrown by jungle trees and vines, with many parts of the temple crumbling to the ground.

Day Thirty Two: Friday, January 04 - Siem Reap, Cambodia. 
Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel dining room.

Morning: Travel to the gem of the Angkor area, the beautiful temple of Banteay Srey, which is best viewed in the warm morning light. The so-called "Citadel of the Women" was built between the 11th and 13th century and remains the best preserved temple in Cambodia. It displays some of the finest examples of classical Khmer art and this small temple is noted for its truly remarkable fine bas-reliefs depicting the Hindu god Shiva. Banteay Srey is unique because of the pink sandstone used in its construction and which is not seen anywhere else in Angkor. On the way back to Siem Reap, stop at the Landmine Museum where the museum's founder, Mr. Aki Ra, was a child soldier during the Khmer Rouge regime and is working today as a de-miner. The museum also serves as a rescue center for a number of landmine amputee children that Aki Ra has brought off Phnom Penh's streets or from impoverished rural communities.

Lunch: Lunch at Champey restaurant.

Afternoon: After lunch, visit Artisans d'Angkor, an organization that supports Cambodian arts and crafts, and helps young people find work in their local villages by continuing the practice of traditional arts. Learn about Cambodian wood and stone carving, wood and stone lacquering, gilding, and silk processing. Continue to the legendary Angkor Wat. Built during the reign of King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century, Angkor Wat is constructed following the model of the temple mountain symbolizing Mount Meru, the home of the gods. Inside the temple, the walls are covered with stone carving and bas-reliefs depicting Hindu mythology and the ways Suryavarman II fought during his reign. Angkor Wat is well known for the more than 2,000 Apsara dancers decorating the temple. Construction is thought to have taken around 30 years of intensive labor. Today, Angkor Wat is featured on the Cambodian national flag as it symbolizes the soul of the Khmer people. You will be there during sunset, when Angkor Wat is less crowded and the Apsaras (female spirits) will shine in the most beautiful light.

Day Thirty Three: Saturday, January 05 - Siem Reap, Cambodia / Tonlé Sap Lake. 
Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel dining room.

Morning: Embark on a fascinating boat ride on the Tonlé Sap Lake, where you will learn about life on the lake. Tonlé Sap is South East Asia's largest freshwater lake and its size varies greatly between seasons, sometimes swelling up to four times its original size during the wet season! Visit the small village of Kampong Phluck where you will see houses built on stilts to protect them from Tonlé Sap Lake's ebb and flow. On the way, you will pass floating houses and impressive flooded forests.

Lunch: Lunch at Cassia restaurant.

Afternoon: Visit the ancient city of Angkor Thom. This city was the last capital of the Great Khmer Empire under the reign of Jayavarman II. This city is surrounded by a 26 foot high wall, with each side of the city being 2.5 miles long, forming a perfect square. Enter the city through the ancient South Gate. Continue to the exact center of the city to find the Bayon Temple. This temple is unique because of the 54 towers with four faces representing the 54 provinces of the then Great Khmer Empire. The Terrace of the Elephants and The Terrace of the Leper King are also a must, as they are both known for their intricate bas-reliefs. Afterwards, partake in a very special ceremony in which Buddhist monks will perform a private blessing ceremony for you, wishing you health and safety during your journey.

Dinner: Farewell dinner at the Viroth restaurant.
