- Athens Discovery
Breakfast:
Breakfast at the hotel.
Morning:
Receive a morning introduction to Athens by your Study Leader. Then join our local expert as you explore Athens' ancient heart. Make your way to the Acropolis Museum and later in the morning make your way to the Acropolis. After the Acropolis visit, we make our way down towards the ancient Agora. There are plenty of restaurants near the Agora and it is an ideal place to stop and explore lunch options.
Lunch:
Lunch on your own to enjoy walk around or rest and enjoy Greek specialties.
Afternoon:
Discover the Agora, the heart of ancient Athens and the focus of political, commercial, administrative and social activity, the religious and cultural centre, and the seat of justice. The site was occupied without interruption in all periods of the city's history.

Group dinner in Athens near the hotel.

Morning:
Enjoy some unscheduled time to explore Athens at leisure to sit and read a book or enjoy people watching. There are many museums and activities within walking distance of the hotel.
Lunch:
Lunch on your own at leisure.
Afternoon:
Meet in the afternoon for a trip to The National Archaeological Museum of Athens, the largest archaeological museum in Greece and one of the most important museums in the world devoted to ancient Greek art. Led by your Study Leader, explore and learn about the collection. Then, transfer to the port for embarkation.

Day Five: Sunday, October 21
- Monemvasia, Greece
Breakfast:
Breakfast buffet on board the ship.
Morning:
Meet for a lecture entitled, "Art and Archeology in the Mediterranean Part 1" led by your Study Leader.
Lunch:
Lunch at leisure on board the ship or on shore on your own, you get to decide.
Afternoon:
Monemvasia actually means 'single entrance', in this case entrance only by foot as no cars are allowed in the city. Once inside, the visitor is taken aback by the narrow pebbled streets and the little stone houses, that immediately conjure up a charming imagery, culminating at the sight of the astonishing view from the edge of the rocks down to the deep blue of the sea. The fortress of Monemvasia dates back to the 6th century. It was initially constructed by the Byzantines on a rock that had been separated from the mainland during an earthquake in 375 AC. From then on, Monemvasia changed hands several times and was ruled by the Franks, Catalans, Ottomans, Byzantines and Venetians in succession. Enriched by this crossing of civilizations, Monemvasia nowadays emerges proud of its history and reviving calmly its glorious past.

Meet for a lecture entitled, "Art and Archeology in the Mediterranean Part 2" led by your Study Leader. Next, discover Pilos, which overlooks a superb natural harbor. The bay looks nearly enclosed with the island of Sfaktira nearby. Pilos hosts a pair of medieval castles, Niokastro, one of the two castles guarding the harbor, affords wonderful views out over the bay. The palace at Pylos belonged to Nestor, the old king who told stories and gave unsolicited advice while the younger warriors fought at Troy.

Enjoy some unscheduled time to explore at leisure or to sit and read a book or enjoy people watching. The rest of the time in port is yours to enjoy.

- Syracuse - Sicily, Italy

Morning:
The Greek theatre in Syracuse is one of the best examples of ancient theatre architecture anywhere and is one of the sites we will be visiting this morning. Before lunch, we will also pay homage at the Tomb of Archimedes and be guided around the wonderful Archaeological Museum.

Lunch at leisure on board the ship or on shore on your own, you get to decide.
Afternoon:
The afternoon will be spent on the island of Ortygia, the picturesque original heart of Syracuse. Here we will see the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, the cathedral which has been built on to an original Greek temple and the fortifications of the Castello Eurialo built by the Greeks in 402 BC to defend Syracuse.

Morning:
Disembark the ship, then proceed to Baroque Valletta, an architectural legacy of the Hospitaller Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. The coach will drive us around the towering walls and up to the Main Gate where our guide will take the group to visit St. John's Co-Cathedral and museum housing two important original works by Caravaggio: 'St. Jerome' and his masterful 'The Beheading of St. John the Baptist'. The latter still hangs in the exact position for which it was painted.
Lunch:
Lunch at a local restaurant, with coffee or tea and water.
Afternoon:
The prehistoric temples of Malta and the sister island Gozo are acknowledged to be the oldest buildings still standing on earth. Architecture in its purest and most original form is demonstrated in the 5,000 -years-old Hagar Qim structure in which participants will walk. A new visitor center explains in more detail the mysterious ancient culture that created these monuments more than a thousand years ahead of the pyramids. Then transfer to the hotel.

- Valetta - Mdina, Malta
Breakfast:
Breakfast at the hotel.
Morning:
Take a ride through the countryside, including the village of Marsaxlokk with its brightly colored fishing boats, Buskett Gardens, and a scenic photo stop at Dingli Cliffs, the highest point on the island. Proceed to Mdina, the ancient capital of Malta. Before entering the city go into nearby Rabat on foot to visit the Grotto of St. Paul, where the Apostle is believed to have dwelt after being shipwrecked in 60 AD, and also the unique 4th Century Christian catacombs. Then walk into the walled city. The ancient capital of the island, Mdina is sometimes called 'The Silent City' for the atmosphere of quiet that prevails there. It is a living museum, with ancestral palaces lining its curving medieval streets. From an amazing scenic lookout on the bastions half the island can be seen. Continue for an escorted walk through the city.

Lunch on your own while exploring Mdina.
Afternoon:
Visit the Limestone Heritage Museum. Enter an actual quarry for a unique exposure to 5,000 years of history in building with stone. A hands-on workshop with tools will give each person the chance to experience the extraordinary stone that has so defined Malta's architectural legacy.
