Afternoon: CHECK IN: From 3:00 pm at the Magnuson Hotel front desk. REGISTRATION: After you have your room assignment, you will be directed to the meeting room to register with the program staff and pick up your arrival packet containing the up-to-date schedule that we will review during orientation in the evening. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT PROGRAM ACTIVITIES AND SCHEDULED TIMES COULD CHANGE DUE TO UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding! ORIENTATION: 5:00 pm. Meet and greet everyone in an introductory get-acquainted session. We'll then review the updated schedule and any changes, discuss responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures and answer any questions you may have. The rest of the evening is yours to continue making new friends, unpack, or relax by the pool.

Day Two: Monday, February 24 - Understanding Chinese History Through Art / Field...
Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the hotel with at least one hot item. Assorted fruit, juice, coffee and tea.

Morning: LECTURE: Explore the wide scope of Chinese History through an understanding of its Art with our East Asian Humanities Professor, Dr. Andrew Chittick. Behold the magnificant brush paintings and photographs of ancient buildings, temples and bridges of China. Continue with the exploration of Chinese History through an understanding of its Art with Dr. Andrew Chittick. As Associate Professor of East Asian Humanities, Professor Chittick came to Eckerd in 1998. He has his BA in history and physics from Pomona College in Southern California, and a MA and Ph.D. in Chinese History from the University of Michigan, in Ann Harbor. He has travelled all over East, Southeast, and South Asia and along the length of the Silk Road. Professor Chittick coordinates the East Asian Studies program at Eckerd College. In addition, he studies and teaches Chinese History, and local culture and festivals. There will be a short refreshment break mid morning. LECTURE TOPICS AND FIELD TRIPS MAY VARY FROM PROGRAM TO PROGRAM AND CHANGE WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE.

Lunch: Enjoy a plated lunch in our hotel dining room

Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Explore the collection of Chinese and Asian art at the Museum of Fine Arts guided by John Schloder, the museum's Executive Director Emeritus, then join another docent to visit the highlights of the museum's collection. After the tour, you will have free time to linger at the museum or enjoy other treats of downtown St. Petersburg. Your group leader will give you suggestions of places to visit, like the Dali Museum, the Chihuly Collecton, or the many shops and eateries nearby

Dinner: Dinner at the Eckerd College Continuing Education Dining Hall. The buffet at the campus dining hall includes hot entrees, side dishes, salad bar, soup, deli meats, bread, fresh fruit, desserts and beverages. Self-service format with trays.

Day Three: Tuesday, February 25 - Chinese Village Elections / The Chinese Dream / C...
Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the hotel with at least one hot item. Assorted fruit, juice, coffee and tea.

Morning: LECTURE: Professor Jing Chen will discuss Chinese Village Elections and US Influence. Professor Chen received her BA in International Politics at Beijing University, and her PHD in political science at Princeton University. Her research interests include Chinese politics and East Asian international relations. She has published in a variety of peer-reviewed journals, including China Information and The Journal of Contemporary China. She is currently working on a book manuscript concerning the effect of China’s Petition System on its authoritarian regime. She is an assistant professor of political science at Eckerd College. There will be a short refreshment break mid morning. Dr. Hong Gu will then Lecture on The Chinese Dream

Afternoon: Dr. Hong Gu, Professor of Chinese Language and Culture at Eckerd College will begin our course on the culture of China. There will be a short refreshment break mid morning. Dr. Gu will continue with the second part of Culture of China bringing us into the more modern era.

Afternoon: LECTURE: Dr. Chittick will switch gears this afternoon and discuss the Chinese Dragon Boats.

Dinner: Special Chinese Dinner

Evening: Enjoy Ang Lee's film, "Eat Drink Man Woman"

Afternoon: LECTURE: Dr. Gu will discuss the magic characters of the Chinese language. After a short break, Dr. Gu will talk about and demonstrate the art of Tai Chi
