Introductory lectures on the history and geography of Spain, expert-led visit of the Royal Palace, and a dinner out on the town.

Morning: Morning lectures on the geography and early history of the peninsula and political development in the 16th and 17th Centuries: The Hapsburgs and the Bourbons.

Afternoon: Bus exploration of Madrid. Afterward, an expert-led exploration of the Royal Palace, home to the monarchy's extensive art collection and a showcase of architectural styles.

Note: Extensive walking (2-3 miles on some days, 1-3 hours, at a steady pace). In many of our visits we will encounter winding or hilly roads as well as cobblestone streets and sidewalks. Comfortable and sturdy footwear is a necessity.

Breakfast: At the hotel restaurant.

Morning: Field trip to Segovia and El Escorial (60 miles outside Madrid). In Segovia the Roman presence is evident in the stunning aqueduct, a marvel of engineering. The Romanesque churches have an architectural style unique to the city, and the cathedral is an example of late Gothic construction. Visit to the Alcázar.

Lunch: At a local restaurant with typical Segovian fare.

Afternoon: We stop at El Escorial monastery for a visit of the political center of King Philip II and a pantheon for Spanish royalty, on our way back to Madrid. Late-afternoon arrival at the hotel.

Day trip to medieval Toledo, experience firsthand the co-existence of the three cultures, Muslim, Christian and Jewish, through our visits to the Cathedral, the Sephardic Jewish Museum and the Santo Tomé Church, featuring paintings by El Greco.

Note: Extensive walking (2-3 miles on some days, 1-3 hours, at a steady pace). In many of our visits we will encounter winding or hilly roads as well as cobblestone streets and sidewalks. Comfortable and sturdy footwear is a necessity.

Breakfast: At the hotel restaurant.

Morning: Field trip to Spain's first capital, Toledo (55 miles outside Madrid). We will visit the Gothic cathedral and two museums dedicated to El Greco, among other sites.

Day Seven: Sunday, September 28 - Head south to Granada through Castille, Valdepeña...
Head south to Granada through Castille, Valdepeñas, and the Despeñaperros pass into Andalusia. Stop en route at a working olive mill for a visit and lunch.

Morning: Morning checkout and departure from Madrid to Granada (260 miles). We will make a stop at an olive oil museum in the town of Baeza (at the 200 mile mark), where we will learn about the history and production of this important Spanish export, and taste the golden liquid.

Lunch: Enjoy a leisurely lunch at the olive mill's hacienda.

Afternoon: Late afternoon arrival in Granada, check-in at the hotel, walking exploration and orientation to the program in Granada.

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel restaurant.

Morning: Depart for the Roman ruins of Italica, just outside Seville, for a guided tour with a local historian of this birthplace of two Roman emperors. Afterwards, visit a bull ranch with an expert on the history, culture and art of bullfighting.

Lunch: Participate in a hands-on paella workshop at the ranch, and then enjoy what you've made for lunch.

Afternoon: Afternoon arrival in Seville, free time to enjoy your last afternoon in Spain.

Dinner: Dinner at the hotel restaurant.
