Day Three: Thursday, June 05 - The Byzantine Heritage of Istanbul
Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: A professor from the Istanbul Technical University School of Architecture delivers a lecture on "Urban Development of Istanbul from an Architectural Perspective." Afterwards, set out to discover the breathtaking Hagia Sophia on a guided visit.

Lunch: In a local restaurant in the old city.

Afternoon: You will then explore the Underground Cisterns, the Hippodrome and the Archeological Museums to continue your discovery of the Byzantine heritage of the city.

Dinner: At a local restaurant walking distance to the hotel.

Day Four: Friday, June 06 - The Ottoman Heritage of Istanbul
Breakfast: In the hotel.

Morning: Today you will set out to visit the Mosque of Suleiman the Magnificent, the second-largest mosque of Istanbul. Continue with the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, known as the Blue Mosque for its exquisite tiles. Built from 1609 - 1616, it is the largest and the national mosque of Turkey.

Lunch: At a restaurant in the old city, next to the Mosque of Suleiman the Magnficent

Afternoon: Continue to the Topkapi Palace, primary residence of the Ottoman Sultans for 400 years of their 600-year reign, from 1465 to 1853. At the height of its existence as a royal residence, the palace was home to as many as 4,000 people. The palace collections include Ottoman treasure, jewelry and the most holy relics of the Muslim world. You will also visit the Harem, to gain a better insight to the secret and daily life of the royalty.

Dinner: On your own, at leisure.

Evening: Enjoy the vibrant local nightlife on the streets around your hotel.

Day Five: Saturday, June 07 - On the Bosphorus
Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: Discover Dolmabahce Palace, the second palace of the Ottoman Sultans, situated on the Bosphorus. Visiting this Palace will provide a better insight to the socio-economic and cultural changes that the Ottoman Empire was going through in 19th century. Then you will board a boat for a private cruise on the Bosphorus and witness the magnificent fortresses, palaces and mansions on the waterfront.

Lunch: In a waterfront seafood restaurant.

Afternoon: Stroll at leisure through Ortakoy, a seaside pedestrian area popular with residents and take in the boutiques, restaurants and coffeehouses for a perspective to daily life in Istanbul. Rest of the day free on your own.

Dinner: At a local restaurant in the old city.

Evening: Stop by the Whirling Dervish center to witness the ritual of the Sufis. This ceremony will last about one hour where you will learn the symbolism behind this fascinating ritual.

Day Six: Sunday, June 08 - Ancient Walls and the Golden Horn
Breakfast: In the hotel.

Morning: Start your day with a very enlightening lecture on Modern Turkey and her issues. This lecture will be given by a professor from the Yeditepe University of Istanbul. After the lecture, we will set out to enjoy a unique opportunity to walk along the ancient walls of Istanbul, including the Yedikule Fortress and Dungeons. See the Church of Chora (Kariye Museum), situated along the walls. The Church of Chora exemplifies the most exquisite and mind boggling examples of late Byzantine Art.

Lunch: In a restaurant in the old city, by the ancient city walls.

Afternoon: Visit the Eyup Mosque, located on the Golden Horn. This mosque is a holy place for Muslims because the standard bearer of Prophet Muhammed is buried here. Continue on to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate to visit this important church for the Greek Orthodox faith. Also stop by the Bulgarian Church, assembled on the site completely with iron pieces shipped on the Danube from Austria.

Morning: A guided visit explores a hidden gem - the Rustem Pasha Mosque, famous for its colorful 16th-century tiles, then moves through the Spice Bazaar, on to the Grand Bazaar, where artisans sell their handcrafts, silver and jewelry. Hear a lecture on hand made carpets and learn more about this art.

Lunch: In a restaurant at the Bazaar.

Afternoon: Free Time. Explore more of the Bazaar on your own or return to hotel

Day Eight: Tuesday, June 10 - The Modern Face of Istanbul
Breakfast: In the hotel.

Morning: Depart for the Modern Art Museum located on the shores of the Bosphorus. A guided visit of the museum will demonstrate contemporary art scene in Turkey starting with late 19th century. Then, you will board a local passenger ferry to cross to the Asian side of Istanbul. Explore the colorful bazaars of Kadikoy and have a glimpse to the life on the other side of the city.

Lunch: In the open kitchen of renowned Ciya Restaurant in Kadikoy, sample the delicacies of Turkish regional cuisine and learn about their origins.

Afternoon: Take the ferry back to Karakoy, the European side. You will then drive through the modern, newly developed areas of Istanbul such as Nisantasi. On the way back to the hotel, climb the medieval Galata Tower, built in 1348, to take in the panoramic sunset views of the old city.

Day Nine: Wednesday, June 11 - Free Day on Your Own to Discover More of Istanbul
Breakfast: In the hotel.

Morning: Free time on your own. Here are some suggested activities: 1) Take a boat ride to the Princes Islands and enjoy a horse-drawn carriage around one of the islands 2) Indulge yourself in a Turkish Bath (Hamam) 3) Visit the private Pera Museum (very close to the hotel) to see their impressive collection of Turkish paintings, including the Tortoise Trainer by Osman Hamdi 4) Visit the Museum of Innocence, Orhan Pamuk's brain child 5) Stroll down Istiklal Street, sit at an outdoor cafe and people watch.

Lunch: Your choice to explore local fare.

Afternoon: Free time on your own. Continue with the activity of your own choice and interest.

Dinner: Celebrate your in-depth exploration of Istanbul at a farewell dinner in a local restaurant.

Military Museum and Naval MuseumThe Naval Museum contains over 4,000 items including boats from the Ottoman period, plates written by famous scribes on naval matters, flags, maps including the Piri Reis maps and other objects from Turkish naval history. Approximately 10,000 weapons and armor belonging to Turks and other nations are displayed in the Military Museum. There are 17 different halls organized under the following categories: Weapons, Tents, Clothing, World War I, Republican Era, Canakkale Battles, War of Independence, Ataturk and Martyrs. The Turkish Military Band Mehter holds concerts from 3 to 4 p.m. when the museums are open. Open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission: 3 YTL.
