Afternoon: CHECK IN: From 3:00 pm at the Magnuson Hotel front desk. REGISTRATION: After you have your room assignment, you will be directed to the meeting room to register with the program staff and pick up your arrival packet containing the up-to-date schedule that we will review during orientation in the evening. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT PROGRAM ACTIVITIES AND SCHEDULED TIMES COULD CHANGE DUE TO UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Evening: Get to know the staff and other participants. Overview of program and facilities. The case for the week will be distributed. Read the case before Monday morning class.

Day Two: Monday, January 26 - Introduction: Case Overview / The Role of the Pol...
Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the hotel with at least one hot item. Assorted fruit, juice, coffee and tea.

Morning: Begin the morning with the program overview. Discuss expectations, the case, the characters, the schedule and the speakers. Take a short refreshment break and then continue with the second lecture. With our retired Chief of Police, Rick Kistner, learn how the police respond to the scene and the steps they take to secure the crime scene. Also discusses will be the role of the detectives.

Lunch: Hotel Dining Room.

Afternoon: Go behind the scenes with the Education Director of Pinellas County 911. Learn how the 911 systems work, the special non-emergency features, and what happens when you call 911 to report a crime.

Dinner: Dinner at the Eckerd College Continuing Education Dining Hall. The buffet at the campus dining hall includes hot entrees, side dishes, salad bar, soup, deli meats, bread, fresh fruit, desserts and beverages. Self-service format with trays.

Evening: Relax a bit and have some fun as you end your day with Rick Kistner as he delves into the Myth of TV Policing.

Day Three: Tuesday, January 27 - Field trip to the FDLE Crime Lab in Tampa /The Ro...
Field trip to the FDLE Crime Lab in Tampa /The Role of the Medical Examiner / Film: "Twelve Angry Men"

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the hotel with at least one hot item. Assorted fruit, juice, coffee and tea.

Morning: Board our motor coach for a field trip to Florida Department of Law Enforcement Crime Lab in Tampa. The FDLE crime lab provides timely, expert and professional examination of evidentiary materials to aid in the investigation, prosecution and/or exclusion of criminal offenses by utilizing sophisticated scientific equipment and proven techniques. Crime lab analysts are called on a continual basis to provide expert witness testimony in court cases. The Crime Lab in Tampa is one of seven internationally accredited laboratories in Florida. The FDLE crime laboratory system provides evidentiary analysis in ten forensic disciplines: Biology/DNA, Chemistry, Crime Scene, Digital Evidence, DNA Database, Firearms, Latent Prints/Impression Evidence, Questioned Documents, Toxicology, and Trace Evidence. In addition, Crime laboratory analysts are on-call 24/7 and respond to requests for examination of major crime scenes. A critical part of a criminal investigation is the documentation, collection, and preservation of physical evidence. This evidence is later analyzed at the crime laboratory. The types of services offered are photography, video recording, measuring, sketching, general evidence collection, bloodstain pattern documentation and trajectory determination. Analysts also conduct training in crime scene procedures and evidence handling for law enforcement agencies.

Afternoon: What is a Medical Examiner? Why is an investigation necessary? What happens during an investigation? Answers to these and other questions as you meet with the Director of Investigations from the Pinellas County Medical Examiner's Office.

Dinner: Dinner at the Eckerd College Continuing Education Dining Hall.

Evening: Spend the evening watching the movie classic "12 Angry Men". Yes, we know you've probably seen this film before but now we're going to ask you to watch it in a different way. This will be part of your preparation to take on the role of a juror at the end of the week.

Role of the Court Reporter / Role of the Jury/Free afternoon/ Role of the Judge

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the hotel with at least one hot item. Assorted fruit, juice, coffee and tea.

Morning: What does a court reporter do? Why is s/he there? When is it necessary to have a court reporter? What is that strange machine s/he uses? Learn from our trained court reporter. Take a short refreshment break. Spend the second part of the morning with our former Judge / Defense / Prosecuting Attorney, Joseph Donahey, as he addresses the role of the jury - preparing you to take on the role of a juror at the end of the week. Listen to his "Jury Instructions" and be prepared to ask questions.

Lunch: Hotel Dining Room.

Afternoon: Take a break from the classroom to spend the afternoon exploring the downtown St. Petersburg area. Visit shops, museums and see the sights of our beautiful city.

Dinner: Dinner at the Eckerd College Continuing Education Dining Hall.

Evening: Do you really know what a judge does and his/her role in a trial? Listen as our experienced judge shares with you another side of the judicial system as he talks about "The Role of the Judge.

Day Five: Thursday, January 29 - The Prosecutor's Game Plan/The Defense
Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the hotel with at least one hot item. Assorted fruit, juice, coffee and tea.

Morning: Spend the morning with a Pinellas County State Attorney as s/he leads you through the State Attorney Office's plan for prosecuting the accused. Along the way, learn about the arraignment, charges, pleadings, discovery, evidence, how prosecutors work with the police and more.

Lunch: Hotel Dining Room.

Afternoon: Spend the afternoon with our defense attorney as s/he mounts the defense for the accused. Learn his/her game plan.

Dinner: Dinner at the Eckerd College Continuing Education Dining Hall.

Evening: Live Entertainment.

Day Six: Friday, January 30 - The Jury Deliberates / The Verdict is Determined
Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the hotel with at least one hot item. Assorted fruit, juice, coffee and tea.

Morning: This last part of the program is one you definitely don't want to miss! Be sure to schedule your departure to allow you be remain for this most important part of the program. After spending the week learning about all the various elements of the criminal justice system, listening to your jury instructions, hearing the defense and prosecution weigh in, it's now your turn.This morning, you will be a juror and determine, along with the other jurors, if the defendant is "guilty" or "not guilty as the jury is sequestered for deliberation. The class will break into different juries (number of juries will depend on the number in the class). For the final session of the morning, the juries will meet back in the classroom to share the verdicts and discuss the process followed by each jury.

Lunch: Center Dining Room. Program concludes with lunch today.
