We are located in Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park represents a 1,805 km sample of Newfoundland western highlands and coastal lowlands - a landscape of mountains, fjords valleys, deep glacial lakes, coastal bogs, and wave-carved cliffs. Arrive To: Check in to the Shallow Bay Motel & Cabins after 3:00 p.m. Time to settle in before dinner. Please be aware that program activities and scheduled times could change due to local circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Dinner: Welcome dinner at 6:30 p.m. in licensed motel dining room overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Evening: Program orientation and introductions after dinner. You are embarking on an adventure in one of Canada's most celebrated National Parks - Gros Morne National Park. Cow Head, a small fishing village on the shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, is our base and is located right in the park, giving us easy access to many of the attractions, historically and culturally, that this World Heritage Site has to offer.

Hiking to Western Brook Pond - Explore Deep Fjords/Western Brook Pond Boat Excursion/Hiking Cow Head - Coastal Newfoundland

Note: Western Brook Pond hike 6 kms/3.75 miles; Cow Head Hike 6 kms/3.75 miles. Rated easy, flat with gentle hills. 3 - 4 hours hiking.

Breakfast: Breakfast at motel.

Morning: Hike across the coastal lowland toward the dramatic backdrop of the Long Range Mountains and the landlocked glacially formed freshwater fjord of Western Brook Pond. We board a boat for a spectacular ride that winds through nine miles of 2,000 foot vertical granite walls and numerous waterfalls that tumble form the alpine plateau.

Lunch: Picnic lunch.

Afternoon: Hike the limestone coastline of Cow Head. Enjoy spectacular coastal views, look for fossils buried in this ancient rock and learn of a journey from hundreds of metres below the ocean to its present day location.

Day Three: Tuesday, August 18 - Hiking Gros Morne - Nature and Wildlife
Note: Option 1: Hike to the base of Gros Morne Mountain. 9 kms return (3-4 hrs hiking). Moderate rating (rocky terrain in places); elevation gain 300m/984 ft. Option 2: Hike to the Summit of Gros Morne Mountain. 16kms return (8-10 hrs hiking). Extremely challenging, rocky & steep terrain; elevation gain 806m/2644 ft.

Breakfast: Breakfast at motel.

Morning: Gros Morne Mountain dominates the skyline and stands apart from the Long Range Mountains. Hikers are rewarded with spectacular views of Bonne Bay and the Long Range Mountains. Listen for songbirds and look for moose along the trail.

Lunch: Picnic lunch.

Afternoon: Continuation of Gros Morne hiking trip. Above ankle hiking boots required, must carry rain gear, water, lunch and extra clothing in a day pack.

Dinner: Dinner at the motel.

Hiking Bonne Bay - Exploring Coastal and Marine Waters/ Theatre Performance

Note: Baker’s Brook Trail: 10kms return (3 hrs hiking). Easy rating (mostly flat with a few gentle inclines). AFTERNOON OPTIONS Option 1: Hike Burnt Hill Trail & Tour Bonne Bay Marine Station Aquarium. 3 kms return (1½ hrs hiking). Easy to moderate rating (stairs with elevation gain of 100m/328 ft) Option 2: Sea Kayaking. Additional fees apply for sea kayaking: $55 per person. 3-4 kms return (2 hrs paddling) Easy to moderate rating; no previous sea kayaking experience required.

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: Hike across the coastal lowlands to an impressive waterfall at Baker's Brook. This trail meanders through boreal forest rich in summer wildflowers and offering great views of the Long Range Mountains.

Lunch: Picnic lunch.

Afternoon: After lunch, choose from either a hike on the Burnt Hill Trail and an interpretive aquarium tour at the Bonne Bay Marine Station to discover some of the sea creatures inhabiting the bay; or embark on a marine learning exploration of Bonne Bay by kayak with a naturalist guide (additional cost for kayaking option).

Dinner: Dinner at the motel.

Evening: Enjoy an evening performance of professional theatre at Gros Morne Theatre Festival and experience Newfoundland culture/history.

Day Five: Thursday, August 20 - Hiking the Tablelands/Woody Point - A Geological ...
Note: Option 1: Hike the Tablelands & the Lookout Trail. Hike up to the Look Out for a great panoramic view of Bonne Bay. Tablelands Hike - 3 km return; Lookout Trail Hike 5 km return (3-4 hrs hiking).Easy to moderate rating (stairs & switchbacks); elevation gain 300 m/984 ft. Option 2: Hike to the BIG Lookout. 12 kms return (7-8 hrs hiking). Rated extremely challenging (off-trail hiking, rocky & wet terrain); elevation gain 700 m-2296 ft. Short water taxi ride from Norris Point to Woody Point.

Breakfast: Breakfast in motel dining room.

Morning: Explore the earth’s mantle and unravel Gros Morne’s geological story. Visit the historic and very scenic community of Woody Point and meet some of its artisans. Visit the Discovery Centre, the main information centre for Gros Morne National Park. Choose from two hiking options: Option 1: Explore along the base of the Tablelands mountain of mantle rock and unravel its geological mysteries; then hike up to the Look Out for a great panoramic view of Bonne Bay. Option 2: Enjoy one of the best views in the park! Overlook the Tablelands, Bonne Bay and the Long Range Mountains from the high summit ridge of the Big Lookout.

Lunch: Picnic lunch.

Day Six: Friday, August 21 - Hiking Philips Garden Trail - Discover Ancient Cu...
Note: Philips Garden Hike 7 kms/4.5 miles. Rated easy, flat terrain, gentle hills. 2 - 3 hours hiking.

Breakfast:

Morning: North of Gros Morne National Park is the fishing community of Port aux Choix. For centuries the rich fishing grounds of this area were known to aboriginal cultures and Europeans. We learn of this ancient history and explore the coastal trail from Point Riche Lighthouse to Philips Garden; a site which for centuries was the most very important to Dorset and Paleoeskimo habitation. Explore the limestone barrens, rich in unique rock formations, fossils, and rare plants.

Lunch: Picnic lunch.

Afternoon: Hiking continues to Philips Garden.

Dinner: Farewell dinner and activities.

Day Seven: Saturday, August 22 - Program Concludes/Departures
Breakfast: Final breakfast and goodbyes.

Morning: Departures from Cow Head after breakfast as per individual travel plans. Check-out is 11:00 a.m. This concludes our program.
