20th Century American Music
20th-century music is defined by the sudden emergence of advanced technology for recording and distributing music as well as dramatic innovations in musical forms and styles. Because music was no longer limited to concerts, opera houses, clubs, and domestic music-making, it became possible for music artists to quickly gain global recognition and influence. This class, through the use of audio, video, and live performance, will discuss the many different genres i.e. modernism and the music of Debussy, Ravel (two French composers who had a direct influence on American music), and Gershwin; nationalism with the music of Copland and Ives; neo-classicism, minimalism;, electronic, as well as the more accessible styles of blues, jazz, country, folk, rock, disco, hip hop and rap, featuring successful artists from each style.Dinner: Enjoy a dinner buffet in the hotel which includes complimentary coffee and hot tea.Evening: 20th Century American Music, Part 2Lodging: Hilton SFO BayfrontMeals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Music of Beethoven
The shadow of Ludwig van Beethoven was so intimidating to composers of the early 19th century that new genres of music were developed to avoid comparison to his symphonies, sonatas, and string quartets. No other composer in the history of western music has had this effect on the next generation, and the power and mastery of Beethoven’s music continues to enthrall us today. An examination of his music in relation to his life and time will enhance the understanding of Beethoven as a person and as an artist who changed the course of the history of his art form.
