Program #2533RJ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
While all of our learning adventures offer extraordinary value, our "Best Value" programs were rated by our participants themselves who thought their dollar went particularly far.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Equipment Requirements
Binoculars are always good to bring along for birding on Cumberland Island and the Okefenokee Swamp.

The walk will take you from the shaded paths of the maritime forest to the brilliant sunlight of the pristine beach. Wild horses, armadilla, raccoons, and birds wait your arrival. A naturalist will go along to inform you about the flora and fauna of the island. Seining nets allow you to collect specimens from the ocean which you will identify. Collect shells and take back for a classroom shell identification program one night. There are bathrooms located on the island. This is a national seashore and the island is protected. There are no stores or commercial establishments on the island...no vehicles except the park rangers. Cumberland only allows 350 guests per day. Day Three: Tuesday, June 16 - Shrimp Trawl/Jekyll Island/Creatures of the Wild
Breakfast: Breakfast located in lobby area.

Morning: Come along for a shrimp trawl on a real shrimp vessel. Boat into the Atlantic Ocean where you will seine for shrimp or for whatever comes up in the nets. We always bring up a few shark, stingrays, shrimp and all kinds of fish. Your guide on-board will tell you all about boating and shrimping. Boat trip is about two hours long. Lunch afterwards will be on Jekyll Island or another selected location. Bring sunscreen. There is some shade on the vessel for those who cannot take the sun. It is a very nice trip that moves up and down the intracoastal waterway and goes out into the ocean, which provides a constant breeze. This is a very popular and informative trip. Don't miss it!

Lunch: Lunch at a popular restaurant on Jekyll Island.

Afternoon: We will head for the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island. You'll learn all about sea turtles in the museum and then you will visit the sea turtle hospital for injured and distressed turtles. Afterwards, you will board a trolley for a tour of the historical district of Jekyll Island to explore the cottages of the millionaires and see the famous and historic Jekyll Island Hotel where the elite gathered. It is a beautifual island with huge live oaks that are hundreds of years old. The trolley tour takes you to the main points of interests. Enjoy this gorgeous island owned by the state of Georgia. It is a full long day of exciting adventures in learning.

Dinner: Held in hotel meeting room.

Evening: We will decide the appropriate class for the evening. It will either be some form of entertainment, a fun presentation like "Hairy Creatures", or identification of items collected on field trips. Whatever, each night is filled with fun for everyone.

Your guide is one of the best reenacters anywhere. Even if you try to get him out of the character of a soldier, you won't be able to. He is the best! The fort is located near your hotel and on Amelia Island. It sits right on the ocean and you'll learn why its location was so critical in the war. This is another favorite thing to do for both kids and grandparents!

Lunch: Catered meal in hotel meeting room.

Day Five: Thursday, June 18 - Amelia Island Museum/Eagan Creek Greenway/Okefeno...
Amelia Island Museum/Eagan Creek Greenway/Okefenokee Swamp Trip/Summer Cook Out/Okefenokee At Night

Breakfast: Hotel breakfast located near lobby.

Morning: We have planned a morning at the Amelia Island Museum and a nature hike on Egan Creek Greenway. Kids like the nature hike and grands like the museum...you decide. We just want you to enjoy the morning before we leave for the Okefinokee Swamp in the afternoon.

Lunch: Lunch at the hotel before boarding the motor coach for the swamp.

Afternoon: You will travel to the Okefenokee Swamp by chartered bus. The ride will take approximately one hour to the swamp. The swamp awaits you with a closer look on the boardwalk that is about one mile from start to finish into the swamp. At the end of the boardwalk is a tower that you may walk up to get a higher up look at the swamp and its surroundings. It gives you a close up view of the swamp and the animals in their natural environment. One time we got to see an alligator while we were walking out on the boardwalk and another time we spotted a baby black bear crossing the swamp prairie land. You'll learn more about the prairie land when you go into the swamp by boat. Next you'll visit an old homestead and see the implements used to farm and garden beside the swamp. We'll then have a cook-out before going into the swamp late in the afternoon. You'll learn about the feeding habits of the alligators and even hear their nighttime calls. Keep your fingers and toes in the boat. We've never lost any yet but there's always a first time!

Dinner: Cook-out with all the trimmings at the Okefenokee Swamp. Great fun!

Evening: Boat into the swamp in the day and come out at twilight. Learn about gators and their feeding habits and other interesting facts.

Lodging: Residence Inn by Marriott Amelia Island

Day Six: Friday, June 19 - Reptiles Class
