Day Two: Monday, January 26 - Allerton Garden and Spouting Horn
Breakfast: Hotel dining room.

Morning: Your first full day on the Garden Isle will take you to National Tropical Botanical Garden – “Allerton Garden”. Allerton Garden (Lawa`i Kai) lies between the Pacific Ocean and the McBryde Garden in the Lawa`i Valley, on the south shore of the Hawaiian Island of Kaua`i. It is a garden paradise, transformed through time by the hands of a Hawaiian Queen, by a sugar plantation magnate, and most significantly by an artist and an architect. The endless possibilities found in this dramatic topography led to the creation of this masterpiece of garden art. A series of garden rooms unfold between the Lawa`i Stream and the cliffs of the Valley. The sound of water is in abundance in pools, miniature waterfalls, and fountains. Statues grace this former estate and resonate with a European influence. Towering rainforest trees with tall curving roots grow near bronze mermaids, a grove of swaying golden bamboo, a cut-flower garden, and tropical fruit trees. Here the focus is on landscape design, but among the plantings are botanically important species of the tropics, including varieties of palms, ki (ti), heliconias, and gingers.

Lunch: Lunch at Allerton Garden

Afternoon: On Kauai’s South Shore you’ll find the spectacular Spouting Horn blowhole, one of the most photographed spots on Kauai. The Poipu surf channels into a natural lava tube here and releases a huge spout of water during large swells. You’ll also hear a hiss and a roar that is the basis of a Hawaiian legend. Ancient Hawaiians believed this coastline was once guarded by a giant moo (lizard) named Kaikapu. Everyone was afraid of the moo because it would eat anyone who tried to fish or swim in the area. One day, a young boy named Liko entered the ocean to outwit the lizard. Kaikapu attacked him, but Liko thrust a sharp stick into her mouth, swam under the lava shelf, and escaped through a small hole to the surface. The moo followed Liko and got stuck in the lava tube. To this day, you can hear the lizard’s roar and see her breath spraying from the blowhole.

Dinner: Dinner at Hotel.

Evening: Introduction to Kaua’i Tonight, you’ll be introduced to the history, culture and the environment of Kauai. Once known as the land where sugar was king, the island is also affectionately called the “Garden Island”, because this Island, more than any other Hawaiian island, represents the stereotypical “Garden of Eden” with its lush carpets of green and tropical island beauty. Kaua’i has abundant valleys high cascading waterfalls, upland rain forests dense with tropical vegetation and high trees alive with rare birdlife. There are arid desert canyons populated with adapted plant life, mountain ridge trails, rivers and remote interior valleys and tranquil beaches. The coral reefs are filled with tropical fish and other diverse forms of marine life. Kauai’s tranquil island beauty will enrapture your imagination and meet all of your expectations with its intimate beauty and warm community.

Day Six: Friday, January 30 - Waimea Canyon Lookout and West Side Technology Ce...
Breakfast: Hotel dining room.

Morning: Spend your last day on basking in the beauty of Kilohana where you’ll catch a glimpse of the past on this authentic plantation estate. You’ll be taken back in time to sugar’s golden era some 75 years ago at this unique location. You’ll take a train ride into Hawaii’s agricultural history on the Kaua`i Plantation Railroad where you’ll tour over 100 acres of Historic Kilohana Sugar Plantation. You’ll come “up close and personal” with wild pigs, goats and sheep and get a glimpse of the wild horses and Clydesdales who live on this estate. The tours through the orchards and fruit farms add to this glorious day where you’ll learn much about Kauai’s history and agricultural past. Restored to its original splendor today, Kilohana stands as a reflection of a vanished age. The home, grounds and surrounding farm land speak to the the same distinctive Island hospitality as it did during sugar’s golden era 75 years ago. Historically speaking, for some this was a time of prosperty that was reflected in the homes built by the plantation’s owners.
