Description: Tranquil and beautiful, Pilgrim Pines Conference Center is nestled on the scenic shores of Swanzey Lake and it is surrounded by tree laden hills. In this setting, you are invited to relax and be renewed in mind, body and spirit.

Pilgrim Pines is owned and operated by the Evangelical Covenant Church of the East Coast Conference and has been a provided for Road Scholar since 1988. It has been our policy not to allow alcoholic beverages on campus. Smoking is allowed only in designated areas in the out-of-doors. Most Road Scholar classes are presented in our beautiful open-space Meetinghouse while the Undercroft (lower level of our Chapel) and Chapel are used as needed.

Room amenities: All rooms have private baths, new beds and walk-in showers with liquid soap. Each room has a table, a chair or chairs, a clock, radio, Kleenex, closet and lamps, along with its own heating unit and fans for the summer season.

Since we do not have daily housekeeping services our guests are asked to make their own beds (linens and towels and bath mats provided), and at the end of their stay strip the beds, put the linens and towels in a pillow case and bring to designated location. Replacement linens and towels/washcloths are available upon request during the week.

There are no TVs or phones in any of the rooms. A TV set with full cable access is available in the fireside room adjoining the Mayflower Dining Room. A courtesy phone is available 24 hours a day on the porch of the Mayflower Lodge along with Wi-Fi access in the Meetinghouse or Chapel.

Facility amenities: Our main class area at Pilgrim Pines is in the Meetinghouse, a beautiful structure with nature views through the windows and capable of holding up to 60 people. Our onsite Chapel which houses a grand piano, pipe organ and video projector is also occasionally used for classroom activities, while the Undercroft is used for our hands-on craft programs.

Meals are served buffet style in our Mayflower Dining Room by full-time professional chefs who not only provide excellent meals with many choices, but also work to create alternate menus for special dietary needs indicated on Participant Information Forms returned prior to the start of the program. The superb quality and consistency of our food service has been a trademark of our Conference Center.

Before or after meals, relax in the fireside room adjoining the Mayflower Dining Room and browse through our small library, enjoy conversation and/or view a favorite program on our one TV set with full cable access. Afternoon: CHECK-IN & REGISTRATION beginning 3:00-3:30 pm in the Mayflower Lodge Office on the Pilgrim Pines Campus. When you get your room assignment, you will also receive you welcome packet containing your name tag, up-to-date schedule, and other important information for the week. WELCOME RECEPTION: Join us for coffee and snacks from 3:30-5:00 pm with an opportunity to meet fellow Road Scholars.

Dinner: Our welcome dinner begins at 6:00 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room. Served buffet style the meal will include a salad bar, meat and vegetable entrée, dessert and choice of drinks. Gluten free and special dietary menus are provided by our professional chefs on request

Evening: Orientation 7:30 pm, will begin with introductions of our instructors and program for the week. Time will be given to review the schedule, cover responsibilities safety guidelines, emergency procedures and answer questions. PROGRAM OVERVIEW... We are honored to have four outstanding instructors this week who will give us insight into the history and lives of the Roosevelt's, an introduction to historical sites in the region along with the power of photography.

Day Two: Monday, September 15 - Classes and opportunities for recreation
Note: Afternoon activities will include a planned hike, and opportunities at the waterfront to canoe, take a,boat ride, swim in the lake, golf tennis, or just relax.

Breakfast: Breakfast will be served 8:00-8:45 am, buffet style in the Mayflower Dining Room featuring choices of cold and hot cereals, bread to toast, scrambled eggs, sausage or bacon, fruit bar with yogurt and granola, plus coffee, tea, and juice.

Morning: Chuck Wiberg, retired professor of history will present his first lecture on Roosevelt & Roosevelt. Coffee Break will feature homemade danish rolls, fruit, coffee, tea and water. The second lecture of the morning will be on Historic Sites in NH presented by the Executive Director of the Historical Society of Cheshire County.

Lunch: Lunch will be served buffet style in the Mayflower Dining Room inviting you to the choices of a full salad bar, soup of the day and taco salad and or sandwich, brownies or cookies and drinks of your choosing. Gluten free or special vegetarian meals are available upon request.

Afternoon: In the afternoon you will have an opportunity to enjoy the recreational opportunities on campus including boat rides, canoeing, swimming, a planned hike and the incredible beauty of the early autumn season.

Dinner: Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room. After announcements and a blessing for the day, a full buffet dinner awaits your palate featuring a salad bar, meat and vegetable entrée, dessert and drinks of your choice. Alternative entrées and special dietary menus are available upon request.

Evening: Meg Kupiec & Steve Hooper will present their first lecture on the Power of Photography through the lens of a Kodak camera. Following the session there will be an opportunity for you to close they day by joining with other Road Scholars in conversation while you enjoy a snack. Puzzles, table games, TV, reading will be available to help you close out the day.

Day Three: Tuesday, September 16 - Field trip to St Gaudens Memorial Gardens and a f...
Note: Field trip by maxi-vans to St Gaudens Gardens, Cornish, NH

Breakfast: Breakfast will be served 8:00-8:45 am in the Mayflower Dining Room, buffet style featuring choices of cold and hot cereals, breads to toast, scrambled eggs, sausage or bacon, fruit bar with yogurt and granola, plus coffee, tea and juice.

Morning: Roosevelt & Roosevelt will be the focus of our first lecture for the day. The morning break will include coffee, tea, water, fruit and coffee cake to help renew your energy. Mid morning we will load into maxi vans for a field trip to the historic national site of St Gaudens Gardens located at Cornish, NH.

Lunch: We will enjoy a delicious box lunch on site...

Afternoon: The afternoon will feature a guided tour of the studio, home and sculptures of Augustus St Gauden.and leisurely return trip to the Pilgrim Pines Campus.

Dinner: Dinner will be served buffet style beginning at 6:00 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room featuring a salad bar, meat and vegetable entrée, dessert, and drinks of your choice. Gluten free and special dietary menus are always available upon request.

Evening: Entertainment tonight will feature the outstanding voice and guitar of John Cucchi, along with a friend. . After the concert you are invited to the Dining Room for a light snack, conversation, puzzle-making, TV or whatever.

Day Four: Wednesday, September 17 - Roosevelt & Roosevelt and a day of photography .
Note: Field trip will take us for the afternoon into the city of Keene for a historical walk and photo shoot.

Breakfast: Breakfast will be served buffet style from 8:00-8:45 am in the Mayflower Dining Room featuring pancakes, sausage or bacon, hot and cold cereals, bread to toast, fruit, yogurt bar along with coffee, tea, and juice.

Morning: We will begin our day with the third class on Roosevelt & Roosevelt. The morning break will include coffee, tea, water, fruit and muffins to renew your energy. The second part of the morning will focus on the fundamentals of taking pictures and illustrations of the power of photography.

Lunch: Lunch will be served buffet style in the Mayflower Dining room from 12:30-1:15 pm and will include a full salad bar, soup of the day and a choice of deli wraps, In addition to a dessert of the chefs choice, coffee, tea, milk, juices is available for your consumption. Alternate menus are available upon request.

Afternoon: After lunch you are invited to a field trip to Keene, NH, a city of 25,000 people located about 10 miles from Pilgrim Pines. We will spend a couple of hours on a historic walk and photo shoot with our instructors. We will return mid-afternoon to the campus for recreation and relaxation.

Dinner: Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room. After announcements and a blessing for the day, feast on make your own salad from the salad bar, hot buffet of meat and vegetable, dessert and choice of drinks. Gluten free and special dietary menus are always available upon request.

Evening: We will close our day with a historic DVD and the power of story led by our instructors, Steve Hooper and Meg Kupiac.. After our this evening you are invited to the Dining Room for a light snack, conversation, and your favorite way to wind down the day.

Day Five: Thursday, September 18 - Class on Roosevelt & Roosevelt and a field trip t...
Class on Roosevelt & Roosevelt and a field trip to two historic national sites

Note: Field trip to Harrisville, NH, a national historic site of a mill town followed by a trip to Cathedral of the Pines at Rindge, NH.

Breakfast: A delicious breakfast will be served from 8:00-8:45 am in the Mayflower Dining Room. Enjoy the many choices that await your palate.

Morning: Mr Wiberg will begin our day with his fourth lecture on Roosevelt & Roosevelt. The morning break will bring coffee, tea, water, fruit and homemade donuts to renew your energy - on site. In mid-morning we will load the vans and drive to Harrisvile, to visit two historic sites: the old mill town of Harrisville and Cathedral of the Pines. .

Lunch: To facilitate our schedule a delicious Box lunch will be available on site. .

Afternoon: The afternoon will provide us an opportunity to visit Cathedral of the Pines, an ecumenical place of worship dedicated to the memory of Sandy Sloan and other men and women who lost their lives in WWII. Beautiful gardens, altar of the nations, artefact's from around the world, tower dedicated to women with four relief's designed by Norman Rockwell and the story of the Cathedral, its founders, mission and purpose today.

Dinner: Tonight a full linen dinner will be served buffet style at 6:00 pm with no dessert as we will be making our own sundaes later in the evening.

Evening: After our Homespun, return to the Dining Room where we will make our own sundaes, enjoy conversations and close the day, the week with informal stories.

Evening: Tonight, there will be an opportunity to view the art work of another Road Scholar program this week. Then, the Road Scholars are invited to participate in a Homespun event where they will have the opportunity to share their favorite story, poem, writing, song, joke, etc with all their friends.

Wrap up of lectures on Roosevelt & Roosevelt, check out and final session on Photography

Note: Opportunity to test what we have learned check out of rooms and farewell luncheon.

Breakfast: A full buffet Breakfast will be served from 7:45- 8:30 am and will feature baked oatmeal, a specialty of the house.

Morning: Mr Wiber will give his final lecture on Roosevelt & Roosevelt. Then, we will check out of our rooms to give our housekeeping staff time to prepare for the next group. The morning will conclude with wrap up session on the power of photography.

Lunch: Our farewell luncheon will be served at 12:15 pm and will feature once again our full buffet style menu and box lunches for those who need to leave early. We hope you have enjoyed this immersion into history, historical sites along with learning some new photography skills.
