Arrival at the beautiful Bayfield Inn and greeted by the Road Scholar coordinator. Dinner/Orientation

Note: Enjoy an evening full of conversation with other participants and some "local" celebrities at a Getting to Know You Welcome Dinner.

Afternoon: Please register with the Road Scholar coordinator at the Bayfield Inn Dining room by 4:00PM to pick up your arrival packet containing your updated program information.

Dinner: Dinner will be held in the hotel restaurant/meeting room. We have worked hard to create menus with dishes that are both healthy and nutritious as well as tasty. If you have special dietary requests, please by sure to advise us prior to your arrival for the program. Our caterer will let us know if they can accomodate your request. Dinner is an opportunity to become acquainted with your fellow participants and to discover what you share beyond a love of lifelong learning.

Evening: After dinner we will have an orientation meeting. We will review the materials in your packet including the schedule and answer any questions you may have about the program.

Day Two: Tuesday, October 07 - Enjoy lectures about the Bayfield Area History, p...
Enjoy lectures about the Bayfield Area History, presentations from the National Park Service and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Note: Our speaker Bob Mackreth will open our first day with two morning lectures: "Opening The Wisconsin Wilderness" and "The Apostle Island Lighthouses." Later in the day you will enjoy a film presentation and lecture at the National Park Service. After dinner we will listen to a brief lecture from the USCG staff and take a short walk to the U.S Coast Guard Facility on beautiful Lake Superior.

Breakfast: Breakfast will be in the meeting room with a gorgeous view of the public pier on Lake Superior, Madeline Island and the sunrise.

Morning: PRESENTATION: A retired historian from the National Park Service will give us the history of the Bayfield area along with some entertaining stories and a beautiful slide presentation.

Lunch: Lunch will be served in the hotel dining area.

Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: We will take a walk through town and visit the historic National Park Service Building. We will hear a lecture on the Apostle Islands as well as the wildlife and vegetation that inhabit those islands.

Dinner: Another delicious and nutritious meal!

Evening: FIELD TRIP: After dinner we will have a presentation from some of the staff at the US Coast Guard. Then we will walk to the Coast Guard Station itself for a brief tour.

Day Three: Wednesday, October 08 - Take an Apostle Island cruise in the morning and ...
Take an Apostle Island cruise in the morning and learn about the shipwrecks among the Apostle Islands in the afternoon. End the day with a tour and presentation of the Bayfield Heritage Center.

Note: Enjoy the beauty of Lake Superior with a Grand Tour of the Apostle Islands in the morning, followed by a lecture about the shipwrecks among the islands in the afternoon. The evening will be wrapped up with a visit to the Bayfield Heritage Center with our guest speaker Sherman Edwards to learn more about "The House that Sank."

Breakfast: Breakfast in the hotel dining room - another great meal.

Morning: FIELD TRIP: We will take a three hour boat tour with the Apostle Islands Cruise line. We tour by historic lighthouses and get a close up view of the sea caves in the area.

Lunch: We will enjoy yet delicious lunch!

Afternoon: PRESENTATION: A presentation about shipwrecks among the Apostle Islands will be given by the retired director of the Lake Superior Maritime Visitors Center/Army Corps of Engineers in Duluth, Minnesota. You will get to see and hear stories about some of the many ships that went down in and around the Apostle Island. This will highlight the importance of the Coast Guard even more!

Dinner: Dinner will be back at the hotel.

Evening: FIELD TRIP: We will walk up to the Bayfield Heritage Center for a special presentation.

Day Four: Thursday, October 09 - Enjoy a ferry ride to the beautiful Madeline Isla...
Enjoy a ferry ride to the beautiful Madeline Island. You'll be treated to a bus tour of the island and the museum with a lecture on the fur trade.

Note: After breakfast we will take a ferry ride to the beautiful Madeline Island where you will spend the day touring the island, museum, and learning about the fur trade. Lunch will be enjoyed at the Big Bay Town Park in the afternoon. After returning to the hotel for dinner, you will have an evening to yourself to explore the beautiful town of Bayfield - on your own or with the new friends you have made.

Breakfast: Another delicious and hearty breakfast in the hotel dining room.

Morning: FIELD TRIP: We will take the ferry to Madeline Island. Once on the island we visit the Madeline Island Museum and are treated to a lecture on the fur trade. From there we head to Big Bay City Park and walk along the barrier beach. This is an incredible stretch of pristine sand that Mother Nature is constantly changing.

Lunch: We will enjoy another wonderful meal on the island.

Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: We are treated to a bus tour of the island with various stops along the way including an artisan shop and church. We'll learn from a native how they thrive in summer and how they survive in the winter.

Dinner: Back at the hotel dining room for another great dinner.

Evening: Free time.

Day Five: Friday, October 10 - Enjoy a tour of historic Bayfield with visits to ...
Enjoy a tour of historic Bayfield with visits to an apple operation & winery with samples. We will also visit Little Sand Bay and see the Hockinson Fish Camp.

Note: Enjoy the day on a bus tour of historic Bayfield which includes tours of the Bayfield Apple Orchards and a special wine tasting at one of the local wineries. Our tour guide will take us in the afternoon to continue our bus tour and visit the Cornucopia area; which includes the Hockinson Fish Camp at Little Sand Bay. The time in Cornucopia can be spent sight-seeing or shopping at the many small gift shops that the area provides.

Breakfast: Another delicious breakfast in the hotel dining room - you're going to miss this when you get home!

Morning: FIELD TRIP: We will take a 2 hour bus tour of Historic Bayfield. We will look at the architecture as well as talk about the history of the area. Tours of the Bayfield Apple Orchards and winery are included, as well as a wine tasting!

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: We will visit the Cornucopia area, which will include a stop at the Hokinson Fish Camp at Little Sand Bay, the Cornucopia Museum (self-guided, weather permitting) and then some extra time to sight-see or do some shopping in the gift shops. This is a 4 hour tour (including travel time) which we are sure you will enjoy!

Dinner: We will have our last evening meal together in the hotel dining room.

Day Six: Saturday, October 11 - We conclude our time together with another exciti...
We conclude our time together with another exciting lecture by our guest Bob Mackreth before we bid farewell to all.

Note: Concluding our stay at the Bayfield Inn will be a final presentation by Bob Mackreth about "Making a Living Way Up North" and the "Ladies of the Isles" which is sure to give you grand memories to take with you on your trip home.

Breakfast: Breakfast is served in the hotel dining room.

Morning: PRESENTATION: Our retired historian from the National Park Service will be back to entertain us with stories of the people who settled this incredible area and their trials and tribulations. Another beautiful slide presentation will give you a glimpse of what those folks encountered and how they lived in this wild, beautiful and sometime scary place

Lunch: Bid farewell to all with boxed lunches to go!
