Day Thirteen: Wednesday, December 24 - Mozambique Island, Mozambique
Breakfast: Breakfast on board the ship.

Morning: The Island of Mozambique has played a larger-than-life role in East African coastal life over the centuries. Formerly the capital of Mozambique, the entire island is now proclaimed a World Heritage Site. It is an intriguing anomaly - part ghost town and part lively fishing community. The island is a huge open air museum. Every street, every house, every brick has its own, faded history. When strolling around the island one feels like being in a time-warp dating back for centuries. Besides the colonial architecture one also notices the Makua women. Their faces are painted white, which are both a cultural practice and a beauty routine which helps to protect their faces from the sun. One also meets the local boys wanting to sell you necklaces made of beads. These beads are hundreds of years old. They were once brought to the island by the Portuguese who used them to trade with the Mozambicans, convincing them that they held great value. Many ships were wrecked off the coastline and so thousands of beads still wash up on the beach today and you will see young boys digging for these beads on the beach. Today we venture out on foot for this island tour. The island is only one-and-a-half miles wide and one mile long. We will spend most of our time in the most interesting part of the island, called Stone Town.

Day Sixteen: Saturday, December 27 - Zanzibar, Tanzania
Breakfast: Breakfast on board the ship.

Morning: Stone Town City Exploration: It has been said that if Zanzibar Town is the archipelago's heart, then Stone Town is it's soul. Stone Town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2000, and is a fine example of a Swahili Coastal trading town, steeped in Afro-Asian history. For many centuries the city market was the home of intense seaborne trading activity between Africa and Asia, and this is illustrated by the architecture and urban structures in Stone Town. Zanzibar also has great symbolic importance in the suppression of slavery because it was one of the main trading ports in East Africa, as well as the base from which its opponents such as a David Livingstone conducted their campaign. At its peak, up to 60,000 slaves passed through the market each year. Depart the port by coach and travel to the Zanzibar Museum. Here you will be met by a senior staff member for a discussion of Zanzibar's rich history and culture. Then depart the museum for the Mbweni Ruins. Often overlooked in the traditional city tour, Mbweni provides an immersion into the true feeling of how Zanzibar was decades ago. From here you will head past Kelele Square to the Arab Old Fort. The fort is located adjacent to the House of Wonders (currently closed for rehabilitation) and overlooks Forodhani Gardens. After a brief visit to the fort, continue to the market where local spices and goods from around the world are traded. Walk through the market and along narrow alleyways with fine examples of the wooden doors that have endured for hundreds of years on the buildings made of white coral stone, giving the city the nick-name "Stone Town".

Lunch: Lunch on board the ship.

Afternoon: Afternoon is at leisure for independent exploration. The ship will remain in Zanzibar overnight.

Day Seventeen: Sunday, December 28 - Zanzibar, Tanzania
Breakfast: Breakfast on board the ship.

Morning: Spice Island: Did you know there was a time when the archipelago of Zanzibar produced 90% of the entire world's supply of cloves? Karafuu, or cloves as we know it, were introduced to the island in the year 1818, and the combination of the rich soil and warm climate saw a vast amount of plantations develop, in fact up to 45 known plantations were recorded at the death of the Sultan. It did not take long before other spices such as cumin, ginger, pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, and many others to be cultivated. You will depart from the pier and drive past the house of Dr. David Livingstone, where he lodged while planning his explorations into the interior. Visit the Maruhubi Palace built as a harem and later destroyed by fire. Proceed to the countryside where you can get a look and taste the spices grown mostly in off-road regions and not easily accessible - welcome to the Spice Islands! Stop in a green area where samples of spice plants are available for you to smell, taste and see. The great variety of spices and plants grown here are used in food floavoring and preparation , cosmetics, dyes and traditional medicines. Depending on the season, you may get to sample local fruits. Finish up the field trip with a visit to the Persian baths at Kidichi, built by the first Sultan for his Persian wife.
