Description: Tranquil and beautiful, Pilgrim Pines Conference Center is nestled on the scenic shores of Swanzey Lake and it is surrounded by tree laden hills. In this setting, you are invited to relax and be renewed in mind, body and spirit. Pilgrim Pines is owned and operated by the Evangelical Covenant Church of the East Coast Conference and has been a provided for Road Scholar since 1988. It has been our policy not to allow alcoholic beverages on campus. Smoking is allowed only in designated areas in the out-of-doors. Most Road Scholar classes are presented in our beautiful open-space Meetinghouse while the Undercroft (lower level of our Chapel) and Chapel are used as needed.

Room amenities: A variety of housing accommodations awaits your choice and needs during your stay at Pilgrim Pines. All rooms shave private baths, new beds and walk-in showers with liquid soap. Each room has a table, a chair or chairs, a clock, radio, Kleenex, closet and lamps, along with its own heating unit and fans for the summer season. Since we do not have daily housekeeping services our guests are asked to make their own beds (linens and towels and bath mats provided), and at the end of their stay strip the beds, put the linens and towels in a pillow case and bring to designated location. Replacement linens and towels/washcloths are available upon request during the week. There are no TVs or phones in any of the rooms. A TV set with full cable access is available in the fireside room adjoining the Mayflower Dining Room. A courtesy phone is available 24 hours a day on the porch of the Mayflower Lodge along with Wi-Fi access in the Meetinghouse or Chapel.

Meals are served buffet style in our Mayflower Dining Room by full-time professional chefs who not only provide excellent meals with many choices, but also work to create alternate menus for special dietary needs indicated on Participant Information Forms returned prior to the start of the program. The superb quality and consistency of our food service has been a trademark of our Conference Center. Afternoon: CHECK-IN & REGISTRATION, 3:30-5:30 pm in Mayflower Lodge on the Pilgrim Pines Campus. Your welcome packet will contain your name tag, room key, up-to-date schedule and other important information which we will review during orientation this evening. Please be aware that program activities and scheduled times may change due to local circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding. After check-in a coffee/snack reception awaits your presence to allow you time to meet staff members and other Road Scholar participants.

Dinner: Our welcome dinner will be served at 6:00 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room. Served buffet style, this meal will offer a variety of selections including meat and vegetable enters, a full salad bar, dessert and choice of drinks. Alternative menus are available upon request. .

Evening: Orientation, 7:15 pm. We will begin with introductions, then review the schedule, cover responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer any questions you have about our week together. PROGRAM OVERVIEW will feature information about our study of Emily Dickinson, Gilbert & Sullivan along with our discovery times at the Mariposa Museum. Following the Orientation, there will be opportunities to converse with fellow Road Scholars over an evening snack, watch TV, play table games, or begin a group puzzle. Welcome and sleep well!!

Day Two: Monday, May 05 - Beginning of classes and first class session at M...
Beginning of classes and first class session at Mariposa Museum in Peterborough, NH.

Note: Field Trip by Maxi-Vans to Mariposa Museum in Peterborough, NH

Breakfast: Prior to breakfast there will be an opportunity to participate in an "Awakening Yoga" session in the Meetinghouse. Breakfast will be served buffet style from 8:00-8:45 am in the Mayflower Dining Room featuring choices of cold and hot cereals, bread to toast, scrambled eggs, sausage or bacon, fruit bar with yogurt and granola, plus coffee, tea, and juice.

Morning: Our first class of the day will begin with a stimulating lecture on Gilbert and Sullivan focusing on their lives and early compositions. The morning break will include coffee, tea, water, fruit and homemade Danish to renew your energy. Following the break there will be an hour for you to walk around the lake, read the morning newspaper, relax, and/or converse.

Lunch: An early lunch,will be served from 11:45 am-12:30 pm in the Mayflower Dining room. The buffet luncheon invites you to your choice of a full salad bar, soup of the day, taco salad, sandwich, dessert and choice of drinks. Gluten free or special vegetarian menus are available upon request.

Afternoon: At 12:45 pm we plan to leave by Maxi-vans to the Mariposa Folk Art Museum in Peterborough, NH. Upon our arrival at 1:30 pm we will be hosted by Terry Reeves and others for an afternoon of learning from different cultures around the world. Our time will feature lecture and hands-on experience. We will return to Pilgrim Pines in the late afternoon.

Dinner: Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room. After announcements and a blessing for the day a full buffet dinner awaits your palate featuring a salad bar, meat and vegetable entrées, dessert, and drinks of your choice. Alternate entrées and special dietary needs are available upon request.

Evening: At 7:15 pm you are invited back to the classroom to enjoy our first lecture about the writings and life of Emily Dickinson. Our esteemed instructor, Richard Tyre will open the flood gates of information about this remarkable and mysterious poet. Following the class you are invited to the Dining Hall for snacks and continued conversations. TV, parlor games, puzzle-making, reading, awaits your favorite way to wind-up the day.

Day Three: Tuesday, May 06 - Classes and enjoyment of campus recreational oppo...
Note: Option: Enjoy a planned hike after lunch

Breakfast: An early morning opportunity to participate in "Awakening Yoga" session awaits you in the Meetinghouse. Stretch, breathe, and meditate to begin your day. Breakfast will be served buffet style from 8:00-8:45 am in the Mayflower Dining Room. There will be choices of cold and hot cereals, breads to toast, scrambled eggs, sausage or bacon, French toast, fruit bar with yogurt and granola, plus coffee, tea, and juice.

Morning: We will begin our day at 9:00 am with the music of Gilbert & Sullivan. Using Video clips, recordings and a marvelous ability to lecture, enjoy the insights our instructor Frank Behrens will bring to the music and lives of G & S. The morning break will include coffee, tea, water, fruit and coffee cake to help renew your energy. To conclude the morning, Richard Tyre will present his second lecture on the life and writings of Emily Dickinson featuring the interpretation/meanings of selected poems

Lunch: Lunch will be served from 12:30-1:15 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room with delicious choices from the salad bar, homemade soup, chicken sandwiches, dessert and a variety of drinks. Our professional chefs are always available to prepare alternative food requests.

Afternoon: Enjoy some free time following lunch. There will be opportunities to go on a planned hike, relax near the lake, canoe, golf or go horizontal. In the late afternoon, Richard Tyre will present his third lecture on the life and writings of Emily Dickinson to prepare for our visit to her home in Amherst on Wednesday.

Dinner: Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room. Following announcements and a blessing for the day a delicious buffet will include a salad bar, meat and vegetable entrée, dessert and drinks of you choice. Alternative dietary menus are available upon request.

Evening: Following dinner we invite you to sit back and enjoy an evening of outstanding music from one of our folk artist living in the Monadnock region. Name TBA. At the conclusion of the concert, there will be an opportunity for continued conversation over a snack, enjoy reading, doing a puzzle, play a table game, or whatever helps you conclude your day. .

Day Four: Wednesday, May 07 - Field trip to Emily Dickinson home and gravesite
Note: Field Trip will require standing, and walking short distances

Breakfast: Enjoy an early breakfast served from 7:30-8:15 am in the Mayflower Dining Room. Our menu will feature pancakes, sausage, bacon, hot and cold cereals, bread to toast, fruit, yogurt bar along with coffee, tea, and choice of juices.

Morning: The early breakfast will prepare us for an 8:30 am loading of the maxi-vans to transport us to Amherst, MA for a tour of the Emily Dickinson home and Evergreen next door. Our tour will begin at 10:00 am and will conclude by noon. Our docents will answer questions and invite us fully into the life and writings of Emily Dickinson.

Lunch: We plan to enjoy a bag lunch on site weather permitting at noon or at an alternate site if needed in Amherst, MA.

Afternoon: Following lunch we plan to make a visit to the Dickinson family grave site. If time permits we will also visit the Jones Library before our return to Pilgrim Pines,

Dinner: After a long day a delicious buffet dinner 6:00 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room awaits your palate. A full salad bar, meat and vegetable entrées will be served, along with homemade bread, dessert and drinks of your choice.

Evening: This evening we will enjoy through video one of the musical creations of Gilbert and Sullivan. Following the presentation there will be an opportunity to converse over a snack, or wind down the day as you choose. Thank you for a good day.

Day Five: Thursday, May 08 - Mariposa Folk Art Museum
Note: Opportunity to explore Peterborough, NH

Breakfast: You are invited to start your day with "Awakening Yoga" in the Meetinghouse. Breakfast will be served buffet style from 8:00-8:45 am in the Mayflower Dining Room featuring cold and hot cereals, breads to toast, Canadian bacon, waffles, scrambled eggs, fruit bar, yogurt, granola and coffee, tea, and juice.

Morning: Our first classroom experience of the day will be with the music of Gilbert and Sullivan. What a great way to start your day. The morning break will feature coffee, tea, water, fruit and homemade donuts to renew your energy. After the break we will load the maxi-vans for our brief journey to Peterborough, NH. Upon our arrival we will have an opportunity to explore the book store, art galleries, and have lunch.

Lunch: You will have lunch today at the place of your choice in Peterborough, NH

Afternoon: We will meet at 1:30 pm to enjoy another class session at the Mariposa Museum, featuring a lecture presentation by Terry Reeves, hands-on experience of folk art and how it relates to different cultures from around the world.

Dinner: Our closing Dinner will be served buffet style at 6:00 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room featuring a meat and vegetable entrée, salad bar, make your own sundaes for dessert, and choice of drinks. .

Evening: Participants are invited to participate in a Homespun event where they share their favorite story, poem, writing, creative writing, song, joke, etc. After the program enjoy conversation, snacks, TV, puzzle making, etc. to conclude your day. .

Breakfast: Note our beginning time for breakfast is at 7:45-8:30 am in the Mayflower Dining Room. In addition to an egg casserole, bacon or sausage, baked oatmeal, a specialty of the house will be served. Breads to toast, coffee, tea, fruit bar, granola,will complete your meal.

Morning: We will gather at 8:45 am to conclude our study this week of Gilbert and Sullivan. Then by 10:00 am will will ask you to check out of your rooms to help give our housekeeping staff to prepare for the next group coming to Pilgrim Pines for the weekend. Following the check out time we will gather for coffee and a brief review of our week studying the poems and life of Emily Dickinson.

Lunch: Our farewell luncheon, will begin at 12:00 noon and will once again feature our full buffet style menu, Box lunches will be available upon request for those who need to leave early. As you go your way we know that your life has been enriched by the friends you have made, the learning you have experienced and the gift of being in the community of Road Scholars. Thank you for choosing Pilgrim Pines and keep on being a Road Scholar wherever the journey make take you.
