Room amenities: Rooms are modest yet comfortable, with beds, a chest of drawers, chairs and clothes hanging space. Bed and bath linens, along with soap, are provided. There are a limited number of rooms equipped with electrical outlets. If you require use of an electrical outlet within your room for health reasons, be sure to indicate that when registering. Heating elements are not permitted in rooms.

Facility amenities: The historic Oceanic House, built in the Grand Hotel Era of the 1800s, houses the main lobby, dining room, bookshop, gift shop, and sleeping quarters. The grand hotel porch has many rocking chairs and offers a spectacular view of the sea. In front of the hotel, an ocean swimming area and tennis courts provide outdoor entertainment. A number of outdoor games, such as croquet and Frisbees, are available and can be played on the expansive lawn. The spacious hotel lobby is set with comfortable armchairs, sofas and small tables and chairs for reading, relaxing and playing board games or working puzzles with new friends. Daily newspapers can be found at the lobby reception desk. A hotel annex, a number of charming small cottages and stone buildings, and several motel-style units provide additional guestrooms and conference meeting rooms. Arrival on Star Island, Welcome & Orientation, Evening Program Introductions with Beverages and Snacks

Note: Throughout the week, the schedule may be adapted to take advantage of special opportunities or because of local weather conditions. --- Traveling between rooms, classrooms, the dining room and shower facilities can involve walking distances of up to 1/2 mile on boardwalks, over uneven ground, on rocks and on paths.

Arrive To: Arrive at the boat dock in Portsmouth (315 Market St.) between 10:00am and 12:00pm. Boarding begins at 1:30pm, the boat departs at 1:55pm and arrives on Star Island at 3:00pm. Mainland commercial parking $12/day.

Lunch: Lunch is in the hotel dining room. Meals are hearty and satisfying home-style cuisine. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available with advance request.

Afternoon: Welcome on the grand hotel porch, orientation to Star Island.

Dinner: Dinner is in the hotel dining room. Meals are hearty and satisfying home-style cuisine. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available with advance request.

Morning: Explore the world of color, then journey outside for painting. The Isles of Shoals offer endless opportunities for subjects: historic buildings, wildflowers, graceful boats, and, of course, stunning expanses of land, sea and sky.

Discover how cod fueled the settlement of New England and go back in time to the era when the Isles of Shoals was the busiest spot in the New World. Explore legends from the past of pirates, ghosts and shipwrecks on the islands.

Explore perspective in watercolor. Attend an evening candlelit chapel service followed by an ice-cream social at the hotel.

Morning: Discover techniques to give the illusion of atmosphere, distance and depth with a discussion of perspective in watercolors. “Bring it forward” and “push it back” with color, values, perspective and overlaps.

Afternoon: Outdoor painting; class critique and continuation of this morning's discussion.

Dinner: Dinner is in the hotel dining room.

Evening: Attend a historic candlelit service in a 200 year old chapel. Over the years, people from many countries have taken part in this tradition and have carried away the memory of a quietly impressive experience. Afterwards, enjoy an ice-cream social at the hotel.

Discover how to capture the natural beauty of this ocean island with plein air painting. Attend an evening program on the history of the Isles of Shoals.

Morning: Investigate the wonders of plein air painting. Learn about capturing the effects of sunlight at different times of the day on a subject. A day experienced on Star Island becomes a moving picture of many moments, with so many possibilities for painting; moments created by the moving position of the sun, by clouds that block or let light through, and perhaps even by a fog bank or some rain.

Lunch: Lunch is in the hotel dining room.

Afternoon: Continuation with this morning's activities with a critique later in the afternoon for all.

Dinner: Dinner is in the hotel dining room.

Evening: Explore four centuries of life on the nine stark and hauntingly beautiful Isles of Shoals. Watch an instructor demo, attend your class Art Exhibit, enjoy a social hour before dinner and attend an evening program on the history of the Isles of Shoals..

Breakfast: Early morning coffee on the hotel porch and breakfast in the hotel dining room.

Morning: Continue with the week's class lectures; witness an instructor demo and prepare for an Art Exhibit of the work your class has done during the week. . It is always a thrill to see the week’s work up for exhibition and to share it with one another and others who happen to be on the island.

Lunch: Lunch is in the hotel dining room.

Afternoon: Paint outdoors and attend a captivating "Art Exhibit" of the work your class has done during the week. Then relax with beverages and snacks at a Road Scholar social hour.

Dinner: Dinner in the hotel dining room.

Evening: Explore four centuries of life on the nine stark and hauntingly beautiful Isles of Shoals. Tonight, a Shoals historian will talk about Mystery, Murder & Mayhem at the Isles of Shoals: Over 125 years ago, two women were murdered on Smuttynose Island at the Isles of Shoals. One woman survived the violence and the story she told scandalized the nation. Revisit the crime and decide for yourself whether the man convicted for the murders, based solely on circumstantial evidence and his own bizarre behavior, was really responsible for the tragic deaths on Smuttynose Island.

Day Seven: Friday, September 05 - Wrap up and Departure
Depart From: The boat departs from Star Island at 2:30pm and returns to Portsmouth, NH at 3:15pm.
