There are a limited number of rooms equipped with electrical outlets. If you require use of an electrical outlet within your room for health reasons, be sure to indicate that when registering. Heating elements are not permitted in rooms.

Arrival on Star Island, Welcome & Orientation, Program Introductions and Evening Isles of Shoals History Program.

Note: Throughout the week, the schedule may be adapted to take advantage of special opportunities or because of local weather conditions. --- Traveling between rooms, classrooms, the dining room and shower facilities can involve walking distances of up to 1/2 mile on boardwalks, over uneven ground, on rocks and on paths.

Arrive To: Arrive at the boat dock in Portsmouth (315 Market St.) between 10:30 AM and 12:30 PM. Boarding begins at 2:00 PM, the boat departs at 2:25 PM and arrives on Star Island at 3:30 PM. Mainland commercial parking $12/day.

Afternoon: Welcome on the grand hotel porch, orientation to Star Island; social hour with beverages & snacks, highlights of Road Scholar on Star Island and an introduction to the digital photography program.

Dinner: Dinner is in the hotel dining room. Meals are hearty and satisfying home-style cuisine. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available with advance request.

Evening: Explore four centuries of life on the nine stark and hauntingly beautiful Isles of Shoals. Tonight, a Shoals historian will talk about the Fishing Era at the Isles of Shoals. Discover how cod fueled the settlement of New England and go back in time to the era when the Isles of Shoals was the busiest spot in the New World. Explore legends from the past of pirates, ghosts and shipwrecks on the islands.

Explore the history and parts of digital cameras and discuss lenses, filters, resolution & file formats. Attend an evening program on the history of the Isles of Shoals.

Breakfast: Early morning coffee on the hotel porch and breakfast in the hotel dining room. Enjoy a variety of choices ranging from cold cereal and oatmeal to fruits, toast and bagels to a hot specialty dish of the day.

Morning: Investigate the history and parts of digital cameras and learn about lenses, filters, resolution & file formats. Learn how to use your lens to change the perspective of your subject. Discover how to use filters to enhance your photographs and to create special effects. Investigate why digital resolution is important in your finished photograph and explore the special properties of each digital file format.

Lunch: Lunch is in the hotel dining room. Enjoy a variety of lunches ranging from soup and sandwiches to Mac-and-Cheese.

Afternoon: A continuation of this morning's class, along with an opportunity for classroom critique and guided field work.

Dinner: Dinner is in the hotel dining room. Meals are hearty and satisfying home-style cuisine. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available with advance request.

Explore creative photography & composition; attend an evening candlelit chapel service followed by an ice-cream social.

Breakfast: Early morning coffee on the hotel porch and breakfast in the hotel dining room.

Morning: Explore creative photography & composition while viewing photographs that illustrate composition rules, perspectives, depth and dimension and special effects. Discuss framing, using the rule of thirds and using horizontal, vertical and curved lines to give expression or impact to your photos. Learn how to use visual cues to achieve depth and dimension. Discover how each special camera mode can give personality to your photographs.

Lunch: Lunch is in the hotel dining room.

Afternoon: A continuation of this morning's class, along with an opportunity for classroom critique and field work.

Evening: Free Time to relax and settle into your surroundings.

Morning: Delve into using light, color & sharpness to improve your photographs. Learn how to read light for proper exposure and color balance or to achieve special effects. Discover how the exposure and focus locks of your camera can help with difficult lighting situations or enhance the spectacular sunrise and sunset photographs you take. Explore shooting silhouettes and using light angles to create texture and dimension.

Over 125 years ago, two women were murdered on Smuttynose Island at the Isles of Shoals. One woman survived the violence and the story she told scandalized the nation. Revisit the crime and decide for yourself whether the man convicted for the murders, based solely on circumstantial evidence and his own bizarre behavior, was really responsible for the tragic deaths on Smuttynose Island.

Learn techniques to store, print & critique your photographs to best effect, attend the captivating "Photography Show" and enjoy a social hour before dinner.

Breakfast: Early morning coffee on the hotel porch and breakfast in the hotel dining room.

Morning: Learn techniques to store, print and critique your photographs to best effect. Discuss various methods to back up and archive your files and learn how various printer and paper types affect the uniqueness of your printed photograph.

Lunch: Lunch is in the hotel dining room.

Afternoon: Attend a captivating “Digital Photography Show” of the work your class has done throughout the week. Then relax with beverages and snacks at a Road Scholar social hour.

Dinner: Dinner is in the hotel dining room

Evening: Entertainment Night: A movie? A variety show? A musical performance? Relax tonight with some form of engaging entertainment, depending on what is available on the island this week.
