Day Four: Wednesday, August 06 - Follow in the footsteps of Confederate Soldiers a...
Follow in the footsteps of Confederate Soldiers along Pickett's Charge; recreate a Civil War hospital

Breakfast: Full breakfast buffet in the hotel

Morning: Follow the steps of the Confederate Soldiers as you march the one mile covering Pickett's Charge. We will personalize the battle by having each participant focus on the life and sacrifice of one solder. Take on the identity of a southern soldier and discover what happens to you during/after the third days fighting during Pickett's Charge. By role-playing the soldiers in one regiment involved in the infantry assault, it is hoped that the emotional context of battle is revealed and that the importance of Gettysburg is placed and understood in American history.

Lunch: Picnic lunch on the Battlefield - weather permitting

Afternoon: Back out on the battlefield you will recreate a Civil War hospital. Not only will you witness a surgical procedure, you'll take part in it. First you will identify the duties of a Civil War doctor. You'll learn the three sicknesses that soldiers most commonly reported and describe the symptoms. Injured soldiers were placed into three categories; learn how to identify these categories. Identify both the good and the bad medical procedures of the Civil War era. This true story reveals the drastic effects of war on the soldiers and civilians.

Dinner: In the hotel

Evening: Meet a folk musician while he plays Civil War era music. He will discuss his hand made hammer dulcimer, the banjo, accordion and harmonica as he performs his musical selections. "Instruments" that could have been used during that era will be handed out for all of the grandchildren to participate.
