Day Four: Monday, September 08 - Monastery and Museum of Montserrat / Free Afterno...
Note: Transportation via Metro, which does not have escalators or elevators at most stations; climbing up and down flights of stairs; walking up to 2-3 miles including cobblestone streets, steps, and slopes in and around the monastery.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: The mountain of Montserrat has long cast a mystical spell with a spiritual heritage pre-dating Christianity. An ancient hermitage on this spot grew to became an independent abbey in 1409. The buildings and contents were destroyed by Napoleon’s troops in 1811 and reconstructed many years later. Gothic and Renaissance architecture of the basilica contrasts with architectonic spaces created for the Museum of Montserrat by modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch. Among the abbey’s notable achievements are one of the world’s oldest printing presses and more recently a translation of the Bible from original Middle Eastern languages into Catalan. During an expert-led exploration, see treasures of history and culture from ancient Egypt to works by Caravaggio, El Greco, Dali, Picasso, Tapies, and many others. But the most precious object is the 12th Century carving of a Black Madonna, Our Lady of Montserrat, patron saint of Catalonia.

Lunch: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions and give directions.

Afternoon: Free Afternoon: Take this opportunity for personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most. Please refer to the list of Free Time Opportunities. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions and give directions to use your T10 card for public transport.

Calle Mayor -- “main street” -- dates back to 1580, though the oldest remaining buildings are from the late 1700s. La Gran Via is a bustling thoroughfare marked by many grand “edificios” that make it a a showcase of early 20th century architecture. The Plaza de Cibeles, perhaps the most beautiful of Madrid’s grand squares, is named for the Roman goddess of nature. Plaza de Colón honors Christopher Columbus. The emblematic Puerta de Alcalá, once the ceremonial gateway to the city, now stands in the Plaza de la Independencia. La Puerta del Sol (Sun Gate) is the geographical center not only of Madrid, but all of Spain at the 0km mark from which all distances are measured. The Plaza Mayor is a majestic, arcaded square that was once a venue holding up to 50,000 observers and participants in events from festivals to royal coronations and even the occasional auto-da-fé.

Segovia was unusual in Spain, first Celtic, then Roman, and in the Medieval era a place where Jews, Christians, and Moors peacefully coexisted.

Note: Transportation via Metro, which does not have escalators or elevators at most stations and requires climbing up and down flights of stairs; walking up to 2-3 miles including cobblestone streets.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: The Group Leader takes us to the Museo Nacional del Prado, known simply as the Prado, that holds one of the world's finest collections of European art in one of the world's greatest museums. Use your Madrid card for entry. As external guides are not permitted to give commentary inside the Museum, the Group Leader will show you to the available audio guide service.

The magnificent building, conceived and designed in 1785, first housed the collection of the Spanish crown. It opened to the public as Spain’s national art museum in 1819. With thousands upon thousands of paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings, other works and historic documents, only a small portion of these vast collections are on display at any given time. Highlights include masterpieces of the French, German, and Italian schools, early Flemish works, and the finest collection of works by Spanish grand masters such as El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, and many more. One of the most famous paintings in the museum is “Las Meninas” -- the family of King Felipe IV -- by Velazquez.

The Reina Sofía opened its doors in 1990 as a modern, contemporary Spanish museum on an international scale. Its collection of more than 20,000 works includes works by Dali, Miro, Picasso, and many others. Its most famous piece is Picasso's "Guernica” based on the bombing of that Basque town during the Spanish Civil War, but with broader symbolism as a plea against the barbarity and terror of all war.
