Afternoon: Check-in for the hotel begins at 4:00 pm. You my pick up your name badge and packet at this time and meet your group leader at 5:00 pm in the conference room for orientation. We will go over the week's schedule and answer any questions you may have about your program.

Atlanta's Civil War Battle, Carter Presidential Library and Museum, Behind the Scenes at CNN, Gone With The Wind Author Margaret Mitchell

Note: The Inside CNN Studio Tour is a 55-minute walking tour that descends 8 flights of stairs. Elevator assisted tours require a reservation in advance. Please let us know if you can not descend 8 flights of stairs.

Morning: Presentation on the Civil War and Battle of Atlanta before leaving for The Carter Center. The Carter Center, a charitable organization, was founded in 1982 by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, in partnership with Emory University, to advance peace and health worldwide. A nongovernmental organization, the Center has helped to improve life for people in more than 70 countries by resolving conflicts; advancing democracy and human rights; preventing diseases; improving mental health care; and teaching farmers to increase crop production. See the museum and exhibits on a guided tour.

Lunch: Lunch will be on your own at the CNN complex. You may choose from a number of restaurants located in the CNN Food Court. We will meet back for our CNN tour after lunch.

Afternoon: Go inside CNN Studio in the global headquarters of The Worldwide Leader in News. Your group will get a firsthand look at how the news is gathered, written and reported by the inventors of 24-hour news. After the CNN tour, we will walk across the street to Centennial Park where you'll see The Fountain of Rings, the world’s largest interactive fountain utilizing the Olympic symbol of five interconnecting Rings. Centennial Olympic Park’s neighborhood was a run-down part of town. That all began to change on the day Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games CEO Billy Payne gazed out his office window and a brilliant inspiration came to him – to convert a multi-block eyesore into a glorious gathering spot for visitors and residents to enjoy during the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games and for years to come.

Dinner: Dinner will be at a favorite Buckhead restaurant called Gordon Biersh. What began over twenty years ago as a dream of bringing together fresh, handcrafted beer and made-from-scratch, world class cuisine - is today a reality at Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurants.

Evening: Hear the story of the author, Margaret Mitchell, and the facts behind the book "Gone With The Wind" from a speaker associated with the Atlanta History Center.

Note: Paved and unpaved pathways through the History Center's gardens lead to Swan House and Tullie Smith Farm. Walking between homes and the Atlanta History Center is approximately 500 yards.

Morning: FIELD TRIP: ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER Experience one of the most premier history museums of the nation! The Museum was founded in 1926, and currently consists of 12 exhibits. There are also historic gardens and houses located on the grounds, including the Swan House and Tullie Smith Farm. The Museum also has one of the largest collections of Civil War artifacts in the U.S.

Lunch: Steps away from the Atlanta History Center and the Swan House, an historic Italianate estate once home to the Inman family, the Swan Coach House offers visitors and Atlantans alike an opportunity to enjoy lunch, shop and view exhibitions of fine art. We'll enjoy lunch before going to the Swan Mansion.

Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: SWAN MANSION The Swan House at Atlanta History Center, traditionally known as one of the most recognized and photographed landmarks in Atlanta, Swan House is an elegant, classically styled mansion built in 1928 for the Edward H. Inman family, heirs to a cotton brokerage fortune. The mansion, designed by famed Atlanta architect Philip Trammell Shutze, provides a glimpse into the lifestyle of this Atlanta family during the 1920s and 1930s.

Dinner: Enjoy dinner on your own or join a group of friends. Many restaurants are within easy walking distance of your hotel. We will be happy to assist you in finding a restaurant.

Evening: A history professor will lead you through the flags of Georgia and the history behind the confederacy.

Note: Travel by motor coach from Atlanta to Asheville is approximately 3.5 - 4 hours. We will take most of the day with stops along the way for you to enjoy mountain scenery.

Breakfast: Breakfast in the hotel conference room.

Morning: Travel from Atlanta, GA to Asheville, NC.

Lunch: We'll have lunch at the historic Balsam Inn. The Balsam Mountain Inn is a century-old railroad hotel nestled among lofty peaks in the North Carolina mountains, a short half-mile from the Blue Ridge Parkway. The 100-room Balsam Mountain Springs Hotel opened in 1908 as a refuge for southerners who sought escape from the lowland heat. Guests arrived at Balsam Station by passenger rail and took a slow stroll up to the inn.

Afternoon: Check into your hotel and get settled in. We'll be having a late afternoon visit to the downtown area and get a feel for the city before heading out the next day. Dinner will be out so dress accordingly because we will not return to the hotel until after dinner.

By Trolley- Montford Historic District, Thomas Wolfe Memorial, Historic Grove Park Inn, Basilica of St. Lawrence, Biltmore Village

Note: Field trips on and off a trolley with expert guide. Entrance into several historical points of interest will involve some walking and standing.

Morning: TROLLEY: MONTFORD DISTRICT Few neighborhoods express the rich architectural heritage and vitality of Asheville better than the Montford Historic District. We will travel by trolley to see this historic area. Asheville architect and supervising architect of the Biltmore House Richard Sharp Smith produced numerous residential homes in Montford. THOMAS WOLFE MEMORIAL: On a visit to the site, learn about the boarding house that was once called My Old Kentucky Home. The American author Thomas Wolfe (1900-1938)lived in thIs home during his boyhood. Wolfe used the house as the setting for his first novel, Look Homeward, Angel (1929). GROVE PARK INN: We will have an expert guided tour of The Grove Park Inn which is a nearly one hundred year old historic resort hotel on the western-facing slope of Sunset Mountain within the Blue Ridge Mountains. Built in 1913 with thousands of tons of local granite, the vast lobby is flanked by two fireplaces built of massive boulders - each large enough for an adult to walk into. These fireplaces are so huge that the elevators to the guest rooms are hidden inside the chimneys!

Lunch: Lunch will be at a restaurant in Asheville.

Afternoon: BASILICA OF ST. LAWRENCE: Understand the grandeur of the basilica on an interior visit. The striking Basilica of Saint Lawrence in Asheville, North Carolina features the largest freestanding elliptical dome in North America, with a clear span of 58 by 82 feet. The Spanish Renaissance style church was designed and built by architects Raphael Guastavino and Richard Sharp Smith, who were both drawn to Western North Carolina to work on the Biltmore Estate. We will drop the group off at the Biltmore Village for some free time after the days field trip. Built in the late 1890's as a classic planned community at the entrance to George Vanderbilt's Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, Historic Biltmore Village today is truly one of the South's most unique touring and shopping environments. Because of its history, its range of unique independent, locally-owned retailers, and its fine restaurants, Historic Biltmore Village has an international reputation.

Morning: Explore George Vanderbilt’s extraordinary home. Outside, explore acres of beautiful gardens and grounds designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Nestled on 8,000 acres in the mountains of Asheville, NC, the 250-room chateau is as impressive today as it was more than a century ago. Biltmore House, the main house on the estate, is a Châteauesque-styled mansion built by George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895 and is the largest privately owned house in the United States, at 178,926 square feet and featuring 250 rooms.

Morning: The motor coach will leave at 8:00 am to return to Atlanta, GA. We will make stops at the Hyatt Place for those who left cars and at the Atlanta International Airport for those with flight plans. Arrival in Atlanta will be approximately 12:00 noon. Please make flight arrangements accordingly. We will make the first stop at the Atlanta Airport and the second stop at the Hyatt Place. For participants traveling out of Asheville to the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, please see travel information for options to get from Asheville to Charlotte. Check-out time from the hotel is 12:00 PM.
