Day Two: Monday, June 23 - Theme: "Counterfeiting, Kidnapping, Corruption ...
Theme: "Counterfeiting, Kidnapping, Corruption and Political Graft." Visits to Lincoln's Tomb and the Illinois Executive (Governor's) Mansion and tour through the city past other crime scenes.

Note: Travel day

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel, available after 7 a.m..

Morning: Travel to Oak Ridge Cemetery and the Lincoln Crypt and Tomb. Presentation on the attempt to steal Abraham Lincoln's body.

Lunch: Buffet lunch at the Chesapeake followed by lecture, "Government: The Shoe Box at the St. Nicholas / Governors / The Courts" by Taylor Pensoneau.

Afternoon: Field trip continues around the city to other crime scenes, including key locations related to the Springfield Race Riot of 1908 and scenes of other misdoings. Tour the Illinois Executive (Governor's) Mansion and tour the garden with the Horticulturist for insight on "Working with Inmates." Free time from 3- 5:30 PM.

Dinner: Return to the hotel and dinner.

Evening: 7 PM Lecture: ""Criminology and Criminal Behavior" by Dr. David Camp. Following the presentation, participants will continue with the special true case introduced the night before with discussion and speculation about the meaning of the actions added to the story.

Day Three: Tuesday, June 24 - Theme: Investigations / Fact and Fiction
Note: Spend the day in the downtown area.

Breakfast: Breakfast at hotel, available after 7 a.m.

Morning: "Death Investigation” with Jim Allmon, Sangamon County Deputy Coroner. Visit to the evidence room and a morgue used by the coroner's staff, as allowable.

Lunch: Catered lunch at the Springfield Public Library.

Afternoon: Panel Discussion: “True Crime Roots for Fictional Crime.” Isaac Morris and Martha Miller, two fictional crime writers, will talk about what they learn from true crime and how that has helped them form storylines and develop characters. Also a review of some of the most respected true crime writers and their works.

Dinner: Return to hotel and dinner.

Evening: “How A Cop Thinks: Dissecting the Behaviors of a Law Enforcement Officer” by Tara Walk, LLCC Assistant Professor, Criminal Justice, who is also married to a police officers. Group case discussion.

Day Four: Wednesday, June 25 - Themes: "Gang War, Colorful Characters and the Go...
Themes: "Gang War, Colorful Characters and the Good Guys." Travel to Kincaid and Taylorville, Illinois.

Note: Travel Day

Breakfast: Breakfast at hotel, available after 7 a.m.

Morning: Taylor Pensoneau joins us again to discuss his research about the Sheltons ("Brothers Notorius"), Black Charlie Harris and other gangsters from Southern Illinois. We will travel to Kincaid (site of a actual Shelton bank hold- up) and to Taylorville, Illinois to tour Christian County Jail and talk on with sheriff about interrogation and jailhouse life with Bruce Engeling, Deputy Sheriff of Christian County.

Lunch: Lunch at a Taylorville restaurant.

Afternoon: Discussion of “The Illinois Mine Wars” by Taylor Pensoneau and a visit to Christian County Courthouse, site of the sensational trial of the Shelton Brothers after their arrest for the Kincaid Bank hold-up, with Deputy Sheriff Greg Hosto. Free time 3:30-5:30 PM.

Dinner: Return to the hotel and dinner.

Evening: “Movies and Crime,” film clips from best true crime movies by Bob Fletcher, LLCC faculty.

Day Five: Thursday, June 26 - Theme: "Your Turn," as participants share their r...
Theme: "Your Turn," as participants share their reactions of the crimes presented this week, and especially to the special case study we have discussed and speculated about throughout the week.

Note: Final day. Farewells and Passports.

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: The group will discuss the crime plot they have speculated about all week and the challenges/surprises in arriving at their expected "truths." Evaluation of how this will work at predicting the outcomes of real cases they encounter in the future, perhaps in their local communities. Evalutions, passports, farewell.
