Day Two: Monday, February 24 - Classes, Tour, and Research at library
Breakfast: Breakfast in the hotel dining area is a buffet with choice of eggs, bacon, sausage, breakfast potatoes, pancakes, oatmeal, fresh fruit, juice bar, cereals, pastries, and beverages. Chef made to order omelets with a selection of fillings and made to order waffles.

Morning: This program is primarily aimed at people who wish to undertake genealogical research on ancestors from Virginia. The primary facility for the program will be the Library of Virginia, the state library. It is one of the best facilities for this kind of research in the country, and in fact for Virginia records the single best. It holds copies of records from all the counties and cities of Virginia, including census, land, and military records and vital statistics. Each day begins with a class taught by an expert on Virginia genealogy and research. Our office at the Center on Aging is convenient to the Library—directly across the street—and the program will use the Center’s meeting room for classes. Then participants go to the Library for a morning session of research. For lunch they return to the Center classroom, and while they eat there is a chat about a topic, or a discussion of any matters that may have arisen in research. Then they return to the Library for the rest of the afternoon. The distance from the hotel is seven blocks with an incline. Participants have the option of walking or taking transportation that will leave the hotel at 8:45 am. Each morning we will begin at the VCoA Conference Room at 9:00 am. The class the first morning is “Introduction to Genealogy and Research at the Library of Virginia.” The instructor will be an accomplished genealogist with good experience working at this library. Following the class the group will go to the Library of Virginia for a tour of the facilities. Depending on availability, some classes or tours may be led by staff at the Library of Virginia, but primarily instructors will be outside genealogists and other knowledgeable persons.

Lunch: Box lunch at the Center on Aging Conference Room. Each lunch we will have a chat about a relevant topic. At the beginning of the program, we will make an assessment of the skill levels of the group, and plan the classes for that week accordingly. A likely topic for this lunch is "The Library of Virginia catalog."

Afternoon: This afternoon we will begin our work at the Library of Virginia. Individual consultation will be available to help folks get started. The library close at 5:00 pm, so we will depart about 4:50 pm for the hotel.

Dinner: Dinner at the hotel. Buffet choice of three entrées, two salads with dressing options, vegetables, rolls, and assortment of desserts.

Evening: Classes in the evening will provide a break from the library and research. We begin this evening with an overview of the history of Virginia. The state had a big role during the Revolution and the founding of the nation. It was an epicenter of the Civil War, and one effect was that a number of courthouses (and their records) were destroyed.
