Sportswriter/ History of Cactus League / Ballgame 1 / Scoring and Legends

Note: The stadium is a few flat blocks from the hotel and walking stairs is required to get to our seats.

Breakfast: Enjoy breakfast at the hotel. Large deluxe buffet breakfast as well as fresh omelette's cooked to order. Be sure to allow enough time to enjoy your breakfast and coffee and be ready for our mornings first activity.

Morning: Throughout this program you will meet wonderful baseball personalities who have intimate and often long histories with the game. We start the program with a presentation from Charlie Vascellaro. Charlie gave his first Elderhostel/Road Scholar program in 2004 and has been a regular component ever since. Charlie will delight you with his stories as a baseball writer and his inside perspective of the game. A contributing writer to the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and Chicago Tribune, Charlie also penned a Hank Aaron biography and is a leading expert on the history of the Cactus League.

Following your morning presentation we will take a short break before gathering to head over to our first baseball game. Our hotel is just a few blocks from the stadium so we can enjoy a short walk. For those unable to do the walk, the Old Town Scottsdale trolley is free and can get you to the stadium cutting the walking in half.

Lunch: Lunch on your own at the stadium. All the standard ballpark fare to get you in the mood for the game.

Afternoon: Game 1 begins at 1:05 PM at Scottsdale Stadium. Today we will be seeing the Giants take on the San Diego Padres.

Dinner: After the game, enjoy dinner at the hotel restaurant, "Jake's Bar and Grill"

Evening: Official scoring and legends of baseball. By the end of this presentation you will have learned that there is much more to scoring than you could have imagined with repercussions far from insignificant.
