Arrival & Hotel Check-in, Registration & Orientation, Welcome & Introduction to Cleveland

Note: Orientation at 4:00 PM in hotel.

Afternoon: REGISTRATION & ORIENTATION: 4:00pm. in the hotel conference room. Pick up your Road Scholar arrival packet containing your name tag, up-to-date schedule, list of participants, maps, and other important information we will review. The on-site coordinator will greet you with a warm welcome, introduce everyone, and provide key staff contact names and phone numbers. We will review the up-to-date daily schedule, discuss responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer any questions you may have. If you arrive late, pick up your packet at the hotel front desk. Please be aware that program activities and scheduled times could change due to local circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding. This City Highlights Weekend in Cleveland is a new Road Scholar "Flex" program. It is different from other programs with more opportunities for you to dine out and explore on your own. You will have the kind of expert-led learning opportunities you expect from Road Scholar, designed to showcase some of Cleveland’s most notable attractions. Several meals have been excluded from the program cost and you will have a large block of free time for personal independent exploration. Your arrival packet will include recommendations for free time activities and dining options. During free time, the Group Leader will be available to lead optional informal activities and dining out that you may join at your own cost if you wish. Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. We hope you enjoy this new "Flex" program and the highlights of what's on in Cleveland this weekend.

Dinner: Get to know your fellow participants in a welcome dinner at an intimate restaurant near the hotel.

Evening: Begin your stay with a night on the town as you catch a show in the largest performing arts district outside New York- Cleveland’s Playhouse Square. Watch a play or musical at one of nine theaters in the district, just a few blocks from your hotel. Or, the group may go to the House of Blues or another venue in the 4th Street entertainment district to hear live music.

Day Two: Friday, August 30 - Highlights: Lake View Cemetery, Lunch Cruise on L...
Highlights: Lake View Cemetery, Lunch Cruise on Lake Erie, Guided Bus Tour of Tremont and West Side Neighborhoods

Breakfast: Enjoy a full breakfast at your hotel.

Morning: FIELD TRIP: Discover the west side of the city on a visit to the West Side Market, which began operations in 1840. Your guide will share information about the market’s operations and how the character of the original building was preserved during recent renovations. Continue on to St. Theodosius Russian Orthodox Cathedral, modeled after churches in Moscow, which ministered to other ethnic groups who had not yet established their own ethnic churches in the early 20th century. Get special access to the inside of the Cathedral to admire its elaborate interior. See other points of interest in the Tremont neighborhood.

Lunch: FIELD TRIP: Climb aboard the Nautica Queen to float from the Flats on the Cuyahoga River to Lake Erie and along the Cleveland shoreline. Get a new perspective on the city as you view it from the water, while hearing more about the city’s development and enjoying a delicious lunch. Learn about the origins of the city as an important port on Lake Erie as you travel under historic bridges on your journey to Lake Erie, where you’ll hear about the city’s growth as you see the downtown skyline. You’ll develop an appreciation of both the old and the new as you travel from the city’s original port areas to its modern downtown area, symbolized with shoreline icons such as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Greater Cleveland Aquarium.

Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Learn more about the history of Cleveland at the Western Reserve Historical Society, located in the University Circle area of the city. An experienced historian will provide an overview of the city’s colorful history, and explain how the influence of both millionaires and struggling immigrants shaped the city. The rest of the afternoon and evening will be yours to explore on your own. You may want to visit attractions in the University Circle area, such as the Lakeview Cemetery, the Botanical Gardens, or Severance Hall, the home of the renowned Cleveland Orchestra. You can remain with the group leader at the Western Reserve Historical Society Museum (at your expense) to visit carefully preserved historic homes and see the Crawford Auto Aviation Collection. Or, you may want to use the city’s public transportation system to visit another area of interest- your group leader can help you choose a destination. There is something for everyone in this dynamic city.

Cleveland Museum of Art, Free Afternoon and Evening to Explore on Your Own

Breakfast: Enjoy a delicious buffet breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: FIELD TRIP: Travel by city bus to the Cleveland Museum of Art in University Circle. Museum staff members will tell you about the collections, new exhibition space, and the museum’s rich history. Docent-led exploration of the permanent collections will be followed by additional time on your own to peruse the museum's extensive galleries. The museum is located in the city’s University Circle area, an idyllic setting that is home to a large concentration of cultural, medical and educational institutions.

Lunch: Box lunch at the newly renovated museum café.

Afternoon: The rest of your afternoon and evening are unscheduled, so you may explore some the city’s diverse attractions. You may choose to spend time with your group leader at the nearby Botanical Gardens, at your expense. There are many interesting choices available for your afternoon and evening. You will receive a list of nearby points of interest from which to choose. In the evening, you may want to hear the renowned Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, or find a sporting event, play, or musical performance to attend.

Dinner: Dinner unscheduled to explore the many restaurant options in the city. You may join the group leader for a meal in the lively 4th Street entertainment district at your expense, if you wish.

Day Four: Sunday, September 01 - Walking Tour of Public Square; Check-out and Depa...
Breakfast: Enjoy a delicious buffet breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: FIELD TRIP: Venture into the downtown area with on a guided walking tour of the Public Square and Mall, the result of an ambitious city planning scheme that combined commercial development with urban beautification efforts. Observe how commercial buildings, public transportation and open parkland are joined in this vibrant central district. Learn about important buildings from the city’s past, and how different architectural styles come together to form the city’s unique skyline. The program will conclude at the end of the walking tour, on the plaza of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. You can choose to explore the Hall of Fame (at your expense) or just walk a few blocks back to your hotel. The Hall of Fame museum documents the entire history of Rock and Roll and its precursors. Explore seven floors of exhibition space with 18 permanent exhibits highlighting the history behind the birth of rock and roll and spanning to today's popular artists. Peruse six special rotating exhibition areas, and six interactive listening exhibits, acknowledging the 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. View 126 minutes of film in five different theaters, including the Hall of Fame, a dramatic multi-media gallery on three giant screens to tell the story of Rock Hall inductees.
