Day Three: Thursday, June 26 - Orientation /Welcome to Venice Lecture
Note: Negotiating the Vaporetto boat rides. Often the Vaporettos are crowded, use your elbows.

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the hotel

Morning: An orientation session reviews the activities and provides practical information about Venice. Take your knowledge and put it into practice as you board a Vaporetto, Venice's public transportation system of boats.

Lunch: Lunch at the hotel

Afternoon: A long time resident of the city gives a presentation on life in Venice from an historic and cultural perspective. A perfect point of departure for our sojourn here.

Dinner: Dinner at hotel restaurant

Day Four: Friday, June 27 - Gondola Workshop / Survival Italian
Note: Minimal distance to the "Gondola Garage", from the Vaporetto stop a short distance to the oar maker's workshop.

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the hotel

Morning: Visit a 'squero,' or gondola shipyard and observe masters at their craft of building and repairing the sleek black boats that grace the Venetian canals. Learn about the technique used to give the boats the strength and lightness needed for a single oar to propel the unique boats. Discover what the carved ornaments represent and the reason all gondolas are painted black.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant

Afternoon: A light hearted Italian lesson: just the basics to get you going. Test your Italian by ordering your own gelato on a walk in the Dorsoduro district around the hotel.

Day Five: Saturday, June 28 - Venetian Treasures / Mask Making
Note: Not much exertion this day, but following lecture, exercise your mind as you look for characteristics the lecturer pointed out in the presentation.

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the hotel

Morning: For the adult learners, an art historian presents an overview of Venetian Art and Architecture. For the younger learners, a more informal session on the art and architectural treasures of Venice.

Lunch: Lunch on your own to try local specialties. Suggestions given on site.

Afternoon: Show your creative side in a mask-making session. Learn how Venetians used them in ways as colorful as the masks themselves

Dinner: Dinner at hotel restaurant

Evening: Enjoy an evening of music. Details will be provided closer to departure date

Day Six: Sunday, June 29 - Art of Glassblowing in Murano / Make a glass dish...
Note: Vaporetto ride to Murano, leisure walk to the glass school where you observe a craftsman making a blown glass piece. The kilns make the room hot.

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the hotel

Morning: Boat ride to the island of Murano to visit the workshop of master glassblowers. Watch them transform silica into vases, beads and many other objects.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant

Afternoon: Show your creative side by making your own glass tile with silica powders and glass rods at the glasswork school's workshop. Discover Murano island at your own pace or take the vaporetto to Burano for a self-guided visit

Day Seven: Monday, June 30 - Dragon Boat Race / St. Mark's Basilica and Square
Note: Row Row Row your boat, some strenuous arm and leg activity if you want to win. Some steep and narrow stairs are required to reach the balcony on top of S. Mark's Basilica for a commanding view of the Piazza. The original four horses are there; replicas are outside.

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the hotel

Morning: A master rower demonstrates the technique of powering a dragon boat. Paddle your team to victory in a race along the canals of Venice.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: A guided visit to the magnificent basilica of St. Mark and the main piazza of Venice. The ceiling is covered with more than 88,000 sq.ft. of mosaics. The steps leading to the Marcian Museum allow for a closer look of the mosaics. In addition the original four-horse team is protected from the elements; the ones visible from the outside are replicas.

Day Eight: Tuesday, July 01 - Padua / Galileo Galilei's University / Giotto's F...
Note: Thirty minute train ride to Padua, some walking in the traffic-free historical center of the city.

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the hotel

Morning: Train ride to Padua, expert-led visit to Giotto's Scrovegni Chapel, to see early Renaissance frescoes. At the University see where Galileo taught and examine the first surgical anatomical theater where medical students could observe surgeries being performed by their professors.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant in Padua.

Afternoon: The expert continues to the Basilica of S. Anthony of Padua and discusses a bronze equestrian statue by Donatello. At the appropriate time board the train back to Venice.

Day Nine: Wednesday, July 02 - Rialto Bridge and Markets / Ducal Palace and Brid...
Note: Leisurely walk through the market of Venice. In the Ducal Palace, stairs are required to reach the top.

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the hotel

Morning: A local expert leads a walk through the open air fish, fruit and vegetable markets of the Rialto District. The view from the Rialto Bridge is one of the best points to admire the Grand Canal.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant. Sample cicchetti, small dishes typical of Venice

Afternoon: A local guide leads the visit in St. Mark's Square of the Doge's Palace, seat of the leader of the Venetian Republic since the 1300's. Admire the lacy Gothic style of the exterior, the ornate rooms of the residence, the art treasures of the grand receiving rooms. Snake through the prisons and the Bridge of Sighs where prisoners got their last view of the sea before serving their sentence.

Evening: An evening walk and gelato
