Day Three: Sunday, December 08 - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - City Orientation to His...
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - City Orientation to Historic Rio/Fort of Copacabana/Sugar Loaf Mountain Mountain/Embark Cruise.

Note: Before starting today's activities, we will check out of the hotel and have our luggage with us as we will be transferring to the ship at the end of the day.

Breakfast: Breakfast at hotel.

Morning: This morning board the Road Scholar bus for an orientation to Rio de Janeiro. We will start with a visit to the oldest section of Rio including the São Bento Monastery, Praça XV, Candelaria Church, Brazilian French House, old Market Street, and the Imperial Palace.

Known worldwide simply as ‘Rio,’ the city is notorious for its idyllic beaches, intense culture and it’s gorgeous location-- with the famous Christ the Redeemer statue looking down upon the city from high in the mountains. Once the capital of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro is now the second most populated city in the country with over 6 million people living within the city boundaries. During the excursion, we will visit the Fort of Copacabana where our group leader will talk about the building of the fort in the late 1800s/early 1900s and the historic context of what was going on in the region. Weather cooperating, enjoy beautiful views of Copacabana Beach and the Arpoador Beach on the other side.

Lunch: Lunch at local restaurant.

Afternoon: Board cable cars to Sugar Loaf Mountain (Pão de Açucar) for scenic views of the city.

Sugar Loaf Mountain and the statue of Christ the Redeemer are Rio de Janeiro’s best known landmarks and, together with beach scenes, are the favored images on tourist postcards. The granite and quartz mountain stands at the mouth of Guanabara Bay and is connected to a smaller hill via glass-paned cable cars. Once at the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain visitors are rewarded with incredible panoramic views of the bay as well as Copacabana Beach.

Transfer to the port to embark on the ship and settle into your cabins.

Dinner: Dinner on board the ship.

Buenos Aires, Argentina –
The "Paris of South America"/Panoramic Views of the City/Tango Show.

Breakfast: Breakfast onboard.

Morning: Disembark at the pier and transfer to Buenos Aires for an enjoyable morning spent exploring the city's main sites. This panoramic orientation will include the Casa Rosada, the Cabildo, the Congress Building, the Teatro Colon, the Boca and Retiro Districts, and the Recoleta Cemetery where Evita is buried.

Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires, lies on the banks of the Rio de la Plata River. Sometimes called the "Paris of South America," the bustling city is known for its sophisticated, cosmopolitan inhabitants and its non-Spanish European influences (Parisian architects designed many of the buildings). Stately mansions, broad boulevards, artists' quarters and lively sidewalk cafes bring to mind the grandeur of Europe.

Lunch: Lunch at local restaurant.

Afternoon: Continue exploring Buenos Aires.

Return to the ship to freshen-up in preparation for this evening's activities.

Dinner: Disembark at the pier. Transfer to a local restaurant to enjoy an evening Porteño-style. Sit down for a delicious dinner and a tango show.

The tango pulsates with the lifeblood of romantic Buenos Aires. The dance has its origins in the brothels and tenements of late 19th-century Buenos Aires and was a synthesis of Spanish and Italian music, Negro candombe and bawdy Gaucho verse. It was popularized by legendary performers like Carlos Gardel and soon spread from the fringes to the middle class, and then to the elegant salons of Buenos Aires. The tango has enjoyed a modern resurgence, and as the country's most famous cultural export it is a staple of Buenos Aires nightlife.

Gaiman's Welsh Roots/Punta Tombo Penguin Rookery.

Breakfast: Breakfast onboard.

Gaiman is one of the last predominantly Welsh cultural outposts in Argentina. The cut stone buildings in the town are distinct, as are the numerous Welsh tea houses offering traditional tea with delicious cakes and pastries. Welsh immigrants settled here in 1874, followed later by Creoles, Germans, and Englishmen. These first settlers are responsible for the development of agriculture in the Chubut Valley. One of the main attractions is the Regional Historical Museum of Gaiman, with photographs and artifacts of the pioneers.

Enjoy a visit to the Regional Historic Museum and Church. Site Lecture: The Welsh Immigrant Story (at the chapel).

Lunch: Lunch at a local farm.

Afternoon: Field trip to Punta Tombo.

Fifty miles south of Trelew, Punta Tombo is the largest rookery for penguins in continental South America. Half a million Magellanic Penguins nest here. In the rookery, one can walk on trails among thousands of penguins, which can be observed whimsically flitting between their nests and the sea or fishing for their food. Many other species of seabirds and shorebirds populate this area, including Rock and King Cormorants, Kelp Gulls, Giant Petrels, Black Oystercatchers and Flightless Steamer Ducks.

Site Lecture: The Magellanic Penguin Within this Unique Ecosystem.
