PROGRAM REGISTRATION: After you have your room assignment, come over to the Road Scholar desk in the lobby to register with the program staff and pick up your arrival packet that will contain your name tag, updated schedule, and other important information we will review during orientation.
ORIENTATION: We will gather for a warm welcome and introductions, followed by an orientation to the program. We will review the schedule and any changes; discuss responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures; and answer any questions you may have.Dinner: Dinner is in Davio's located off the hotel lobby. The idea behind Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse is simple: regional Italian foods with a focus on the grill, and everything from the best ingredients. You will have a choice of entrée. We will have an introductory lecture on Dr. Barnes and the collection followed by time to visit the galleries on your own with audio cassette.Lunch: Lunch will be on your own to explore local restaurants.Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. PAFA as it is known today was founded in 1805 by painter and scientist Charles Willson Peale, sculptor William Rush, and other artists and business leaders. It is the oldest art museum and school in the nation. The current museum building opened in 1876 and has been designated a National Historic Landmark. The collection is installed in a chronological and thematic format, exploring the history of American art from the 1760s to the present. We will have a docent-led exploration of this magnificent collection.Afternoon: FREE AFTERNOON: following our visit to PAFA you will have time to explore other sites in PhiladelphiaDinner: Dinner this evening is on your own to enjoy many of Philadelphia's outstanding restaurants.Evening: FREE EVENING: Take this evening to explore more of the city on your own, spend time with friends, or perhaps take in a performance of theater or music. Following the lecture, we board our bus for our field trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.Lunch: Lunch is on your own at the musuem. Choose from the Cafeteria or Granite Hill, the museum’s fine eatery, both operated by acclaimed restaurateur Stephen Starr’s catering group. The Cafeteria offers a variety of options from omelets to soups, salads, sandwiches, daily changing seasonal entrées, and a pastry table. Granite Hill’s French bistro menu also features seasonal appetizers, entrée salads, omelets, the freshest fish, and specialty cocktails and wines.Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Explore the incomparable galleries of The Philadelphia Museum of Art, among the largest museums in the U.S., with 200 galleries and a collection of more than 227,000 works of art spanning the creative achievements of the Western world since the first century AD and those of Asia since the third millennium BC. The European holdings date from the Medieval era to the present, and the American collections are among the finest in the country. If there is a major exhibit on display, timed tickets will be provided for our group.
You may remain at the museum and explore as you wish, returning to the hotel on your own via readily available taxis or convenient public bus. Seniors with a Medicare card ride our public buses for free!
