Afternoon: HOTEL CHECK-IN: Available from 4:00pm.

PROGRAM REGISTRATION: After you have your room assignment, come over to the Road Scholar desk in the lobby to register with the program staff and pick up your arrival packet that will contain your name tag, updated schedule, and other important information we will review during orientation.

ORIENTATION: We will gather for a warm welcome and introductions, followed by an orientation to the program. We will review the schedule and any changes; discuss responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures; and answer any questions you may have.

Dinner: Dinner is in Davio's located off the hotel lobby. The idea behind Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse is simple: regional Italian foods with a focus on the grill, and everything from the best ingredients. You will have a choice of entrée. Special dietary requests (vegetarian and gluten-free) can be accommodated with advance notice via your personal information form.

Evening: FREE EVENING: The evening is free for you to enjoy making new friends or just have a good night's rest to prepare for the full day ahead.

Barnes Foundation on the Parkway, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Free Afternoon and Evening

Morning: FIELD TRIP: We board our bus for the short trip to the Barnes on the Parkway. This unique educational institution boasts a legendary art collection — the personal achievement of Dr. Albert C. Barnes — including some of the world's finest examples of post-Impressionist and early Modern works, African and other non-Western art, decorative arts, and more. The Barnes Foundation unveiled its new Philadelphia home in May 2012. This collection is now accessible to the public as never before in rooms reflective of the intimate layout and unique character of the original galleries in Merion.

We will have an introductory lecture on Dr. Barnes and the collection followed by time to visit the galleries on your own with audio cassette.

Lunch: Lunch will be on your own to explore local restaurants.

Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. PAFA as it is known today was founded in 1805 by painter and scientist Charles Willson Peale, sculptor William Rush, and other artists and business leaders. It is the oldest art museum and school in the nation. The current museum building opened in 1876 and has been designated a National Historic Landmark. The collection is installed in a chronological and thematic format, exploring the history of American art from the 1760s to the present. We will have a docent-led exploration of this magnificent collection.

Afternoon: FREE AFTERNOON: following our visit to PAFA you will have time to explore other sites in Philadelphia

Dinner: Dinner this evening is on your own to enjoy many of Philadelphia's outstanding restaurants.

Evening: FREE EVENING: Take this evening to explore more of the city on your own, spend time with friends, or perhaps take in a performance of theater or music. The Avenue of the Arts, Walnut Street, and the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts are all nearby.

Morning: LECTURE:

Following the lecture, we board our bus for our field trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Lunch: Lunch is on your own at the musuem. Choose from the Cafeteria or Granite Hill, the museum’s fine eatery, both operated by acclaimed restaurateur Stephen Starr’s catering group. The Cafeteria offers a variety of options from omelets to soups, salads, sandwiches, daily changing seasonal entrées, and a pastry table. Granite Hill’s French bistro menu also features seasonal appetizers, entrée salads, omelets, the freshest fish, and specialty cocktails and wines.

Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Explore the incomparable galleries of The Philadelphia Museum of Art, among the largest museums in the U.S., with 200 galleries and a collection of more than 227,000 works of art spanning the creative achievements of the Western world since the first century AD and those of Asia since the third millennium BC. The European holdings date from the Medieval era to the present, and the American collections are among the finest in the country. If there is a major exhibit on display, timed tickets will be provided for our group.

You may remain at the museum and explore as you wish, returning to the hotel on your own via readily available taxis or convenient public bus. Seniors with a Medicare card ride our public buses for free! The cost of a taxi to the hotel should be approximately $8 for up to 4 persons.

Dinner: Dinner is at a local restaurant

Evening: EVENING PERFORMANCE: We will attend the performance "Dino" at the Walnut Street Theater. Step back to the time of the Latin Casino in New Jersey when entertainers performed by singing and repartee with the audience such as Dean Martin. It will a time for nostalgia and an enjoyable evening for all

Morning: FIELD TRIP – Rodin Museum and Public Art. Learn about Rodin and the “lost wax” method dating back to the Greeks to understand the process of casting from clay to bronze. We will also see and learn about public art sculptures in the area and the “one percent clause.” In the late 1950s, the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority included a clause in its development contracts requiring that at least one percent of construction budgets be allocated to fine art. The program has thus far funded more than 200 pieces of public art.

Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Barnes Foundation. We return with a private educator who will take us through the galleries in small groups to better understand and appreciate the “wall ensembles” created by Albert Barnes.

Dinner: Enjoy a relaxing meal at the award-winning Prime Rib seafood and steak restaurant evoking memories of bygone supper clubs with a pianist playing live in the background.

Evening: PERFORMANCE: The Curtis Institute of Music presents recitals by its highly talented students at The Curtis Mansion from mid-October through mid-May. If a performance is scheduled, we will attend; if there is no performance, please enjoy the evening on your own.

Morning: We enjoy a final lecture on sculpture art and architecture in Fairmount Park, the largest enjoyment park in the USA over 7,000 acres with colonial houses, golf courses, riding stables, caves and nature trails.
