Day One: Tuesday, September 24 - Come meet your fellow program participants at the...
Come meet your fellow program participants at the hotel for a casual, fun mixer followed by a light dinner. After dinner we'll do an overview of the program and cover the interesting history of the Chicago Botanic Garden.

Arrive To: Program check-in begins at 3:30 p.m. in the lobby of your hotel. At this time you will meet your Program Coordinator and Program Volunteers and pick up your orientation packet. No programming planned for this time period, just a flexible check-in.

Afternoon: A welcome reception and mixer is planned for 4:30-5:30. Late program check-in will be available.

Dinner: We'll transition from our reception to a light dinner at 5:30 p.m. After dinner we'll begin our program orientation and historical review of the Chicago Botanic Garden. Late program check-in will remain open and available.

Day Two: Wednesday, September 25 - Each day we'll peel back the layers of the Garden...
Each day we'll peel back the layers of the Garden to reveal a beautiful core. Today we'll start with the exterior layer and focus on stunning beauty. You'll gather inside information via go-sees and lectures from staff horticulturists.

Breakfast: Breakfast is per your own schedule at the hotel. The buffet opens at 7 a.m. and is already included in your program registration fee. 9:00 a.m. transportation from the hotel to the Chicago Botanic Garden. We provide a program shuttle for the one mile ride to the Garden.

Morning: 9:30 programming begins! Dress warmly--Our first activity will be an overall introduction to the 385 acres of Garden via a trip on the Grand Tram. Next we'll meet the horticulturists from some of our most popular gardens and learn from the insider information that keeps their gardens in show-stopping form from planting practices to care and maintenance to planning bloom succession. Morning programming will consist of classroom experiences as well as getting outside into the specific garden areas we're discussing.

Lunch: Noon--Sit down to a casual lunch with your peers and some hungry horticulturists! A select group of Chicago Botanic Garden staffers join you so that you will have more one-on-one time to ask questions or explore ideas.

Afternoon: 1:00 p.m. start--There is so much more you need to see and experience! We'll spend the afternoon echoing the morning's programming with lectures and walk & talks from expert horticulturists in gardening themes and areas we haven't yet explored. If you're a gardener, today is a great day to take notes and gather ideas for your home garden. 4:00 p.m. break is scheduled to allow time for an optional return trip to the hotel.

Dinner: 5:00 Dinner will be outside (weather permitting) at the Chicago Botanic Garden followed by time on your own for photography, strolling the gardens, artwork, journaling, or simply resting amidst the beauty of nature. Transportation back to the hotel is arranged for 6:30 p.m.

Day Three: Thursday, September 26 - The second layer of our program discovery encompa...
The second layer of our program discovery encompasses science. Public gardens play a major role in the conservation of plant species. You spend time today learning about the efforts we currently undertake. This will be an interesting day!

Breakfast: Breakfast is per your own schedule at the hotel. The buffet opens at 7 a.m. and is already included in your program registration fee. 9:00 a.m. transportation from the hotel to the Chicago Botanic Garden. We provide a program shuttle for the one mile ride to the Garden.

Morning: 9:30 a.m. Programming Begins. Today we get to "play" with the scientists! We'll start the morning off with an educational tour of the Plant Conservation Center, a green building that hosts cutting edge laboratories and scientists working hard to save plant species from becoming extinct. We will learn via lectures with the scientists and tours of labs and equipment. Morning topics include citizen science efforts, the Millenium Seed Bank, and current research projects being carried out on-site.

Lunch: Noon--Sit down to a casual lunch with your peers and some hungry scientists! A select group of Chicago Botanic Garden staffers join you so that you will have more one-on-one time to ask questions or explore ideas.

Afternoon: 1:00 p.m. Afternoon Programming. Let's go explore outside and conduct a little "field work" ourselves! We'll learn about the structured plant evaluation process and field trials of recently acquired species collected abroad. We'll also take a turn through the woods with an ecologist to evaluate this Oak Savannah ecosystem and see what we can find. 4:30 p.m. is transit back to the hotel.

Dinner: Dinner is on your own tonight

Evening: Free Time--It's Friday night and you're only 20 miles from downtown Chicago filled with fun things to do and excellent restaurants to visit. Take some time on your own to hit the lively night life, go to the theatre, or whatever your heart desires! If you prefer, there are many restaurants near your hotel with various price points that your Program Coordinator and hotel staff can recommend.

Day Four: Friday, September 27 - A public garden touches the community in many way...
A public garden touches the community in many ways and this is our focus today. We'll learn about urban farming, community gardening and organic vegetable production. We'll also discover other methods of branching out....some which may surprise you!

Breakfast: Breakfast is per your own schedule at the hotel. The buffet opens at 7 a.m. and is already included in your program registration fee. 9:00 a.m. transportation from the hotel to the Chicago Botanic Garden. We provide a program shuttle for the one mile ride to the Garden.

Morning: 9:30 Programming Begins--It's harvest time and we're going to spend the morning on the all organic Fruit and Vegetable Island during the annual Harvest Festival. We'll learn from Chicago Botanic Staff involved in the community gardening and urban agriculture movement as well as growers currently practicing organic methods.

Lunch: Noon--Sit down to a casual lunch with your peers and some hungry growers! A select group of Chicago Botanic Garden staffers join you so that you will have more one-on-one time to ask questions or explore ideas.

Afternoon: 1:00 p.m.--We'll depart from the agriculture scene and jump into an artistic approach to understanding landscape design--Japanese style. Thousands of people migrate to the Chicago Botanic Garden annually to experience our Japanese island gardens in the fall as they are simply magical. But do you know the theories and practices behind the design and care of a world-renown Japanese-style garden? We'll enjoy classes and walk & talks with Japanese garden experts. 4:00 break is built in to allow optional time to return to the hotel.

Dinner: 5:00 p.m. Dinner will be a magical time (planned outside if weather permitting) at the Chicago Botanic Garden.

Evening: 5:30 p.m.-- Relax and have fun with us on your final evening at the Chicago Botanic Garden. No need to dress up, we're keeping everything casual and fun. We'll put on music good enough to dance to...so bring your dancing shoes if you're so inclined! If you are not a dancer, sit back and watch the sun set. For those who have been inspired by the Garden, you can take time on your own for photography, strolling the gardens, artwork, journaling, or simply resting amidst the beauty of nature. Transportation back to the hotel is arranged for 7:30 p.m.

Day Five: Saturday, September 28 - Our final day will allow us with time to explore ...
Our final day will allow us with time to explore the railroad garden and the library's rare book collection.

Breakfast: Breakfast is per your own schedule at the hotel. The buffet opens at 7 a.m. and is already included in your program registration fee. 9:00 a.m. transportation from the hotel to the Chicago Botanic Garden. We provide a program shuttle for the one mile ride to the Garden.

Morning: 9:00 a.m.--Programming Begins--You can't leave the Chicago Botanic Garden without having visited the Railroad Garden where everything is done in miniature scale. We'll meet a rail operator who will provide us with a peek behind-the-scenes of an active garden that speaks to children of all ages. We'll also meet one of the Chicago Botanic Garden's very own librarians who will take you on a verbal adventure in a classroom setting showing you some of the ancient, rare books collection and their stories. Programming ends at 11:30 a.m. but you are welcome to stay on at the Chicago Botanic Garden for free time the rest of the day.
