Day Three: Saturday, January 18 - Mumbai / Orientation / Prince of Wales Museum / M...
Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: Begin the morning with your program orientation. Then continue on a discovery of Mumbai, driving past the Gateway of India, Dhobi ghat and ending at the Prince of Wales Museum where you enjoy an expert presentation, "Reflections on Repatriation of Cultural Objects and Artifacts," by a member of the Prince of Wales Museum. Afterwards, discover the museum.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch see something typically Mumbai; the Dubba wala, are people employed in Mumbai to collect freshly cooked food in lunch boxes from the home of the office workers and delivering them to their respective workplace each day.

Afternoon: Discover Mani Bhawan, where Gandhi initiated the Non-Cooperation, Satyagraha, Swadeshi, Khadi and Khilafat movements, and continue to Crawford market, one of South India’s most colorful and famous markets. Return to the hotel. Then get ready to take a horse carriage ride to dinner.

Morning: Have a relaxed morning and get ready to transfer to the airport at mid-morning.

Lunch: Boxed lunch from the hotel will be available en route.

Afternoon: Transfer to your hotel to check in to your room at the Oberoi Udaivilas. Get ready for the cocktail party and board a boat to the Leela Hotel.

Dinner: Canopy dinner together with the cocktail party hosted by Road Scholar President James Moses.

Day Five: Monday, January 20 - Udaipur / City Palace / Lok Kala Museum
Note: The miniature painting presentation is done at an art Gallery. While you will be learning about miniature painting, be aware that this is also a shop where you can purchase painting is you desire, but there is no need to do so. Road Scholar has purchased a commemorative painting for all participants.

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: Enjoy the morning exploring the City Place and the Jagdish temple located in the city palace complex. The City Palace in Udaipur was built in a flamboyant style and is considered the largest of its type in Rajasthan, a fusion of the Rajasthani and Mughal architectural styles, and was built on a hilltop that gives a panoramic view of the city and its surroundings, including several historic monuments such as the Lake Palace in Lake Pichola, the Jag Mandir (another island in the lake), the Jagdish Temple (close to the palace), the Monsoon Palace (on top of an overlooking hillock nearby) and the Neemach Mata temple. Take in the colorful surroundings of the local market near the Jagdish temple, while walking towards the restaurant where you will have lunch.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Explore the Lok Kala Museum, a museum rarely visited by foreigners. This is one of the most famous museums of Udaipur exhibiting a unique collection of folk art and folklore of Rajasthan. Then enjoy a traditional Rajasthani puppet show at the museum that will show some of the dance and ceremony of Rajasthan. Miniature painting is a traditional art form of Udaipur where the painting itself is not miniature, but the art of creating these paintings uses minute details that can only be seen with a magnifying glass. Then, learn about the art of Rajasthan with a presentation on "Miniature Paintings: The History, Method and Medium.

Description: Sardargarh Fort was constructed from 1738 to 1743 by Sardar Singh one of the most powerful Dhodihais. The Forts overall architectural style is grand, but still it strikes you with a solemn austerity. Understandable, since it was build for military reasons, it is fortified with massive ramparts, and giant circular bastions with battlements. Huge entrances and gateways, concentric walls and imposing arches, domes and vaulted spaces, textured facades, jharokhas (balconies) and cannons complete the picture of medieval military ambience. Temples, gardens, bath aria, granaries, residential suites, audience halls, pavilions, water works, watch towers, armories, treasuries and mint dungeons are spread out across three lakh square feet with courtyards. The fort still retains its medieval underground infrastructure - passage systems, rooms, halls, granaries and stores, open today to guests of the Hotel. The Hotel offers a breathtaking view on all sides. To its north is the enthralling view of the Lake. The Darbar Hall offers a charming vista of the village. And looming over the horizon is the imposing Aravalli Hill Range.

Day Six: Tuesday, January 21 - Udaipur / Sardargarh / Village Visit
Note: Drive time is approximately 2.5 hours.

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: Check out of hotel and depart for Check out of hotel and depart for Sardargarh. Along the way, stop at a local temple, Saas Bahu Temple Complex, built by King Mahapala in the 10th century. The complex includes a cluster of Temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu and the two main temples are situated very close to each other. The larger temple with a torana in front is called Saas while the smaller temple has octagonal ceilings and is called as Bahu. Both are constructed on a common platform. Then continue to Sardargarh with a presentation by your study leader on “The Rajputs of Rajasthan.”

Lunch: Lunch at Sardargarh, a traditional fort built from 1738 to 1743 by Sardar Singh, one of the most powerful Dhodhias (Prince Warrior) during this time period.

Afternoon: Take a jeep to vist the local village with the owner to learn about life in the rural areas. End the day at sunset point on Lake Manohar Sagar.

Dinner: Dinner at the fort.

Day Seven: Wednesday, January 22 - Sardargarh / Train Ride / Cooking Demonstration /...
Sardargarh / Train Ride / Cooking Demonstration / Rajasthani Gala Dinner with James Moses

Note: The train ride is a typical local train with wooden benches and used by villagers and locals. It is approximately a one hour ride that puts you in close contact with locals and offers a very special insight into life in the local community.

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: Take a local train ride to see the village of Sardargarh, with a view of the vista of this area as it changes from a village to dunes to wooded area and ending with a visit of a local temple and the town of Amet Haveli.

Lunch: Enjoy a cooking demonstration followed by lunch at the hotel. Learn a little about Indian cooking and the herbs and spices that make this cuisine so aromatic and flavorful.

Afternoon: Then join a walking discovery of the fort, led by the fort owner, and learn about the fort, its history and its inhabitants.

Dinner: Join Road Scholar President James Moses for a private Rajasthan gala dinner. Please note that theme clothing for this celebration will be provided and is yours to keep.

Day Eight: Thursday, January 23 - Sardargarh / Jaipur
Note: Drive time is approximately seven hours. There will be stops and lunch along the way to break this drive.

Afternoon: Upon arrival in Jaipur, check in with time to relax in the afternoon at your hotel. Then in the early evening, join a presentation on the “The History of Jaipur” by a local historian and folk expert.

Day Nine: Friday, January 24 - Jaipur / Amber Fort / Junta Manar
Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: We arrive at Amber (pronounced Amer) Fort, set in rugged hills about six miles from Jaipur. Construction of this ancient citadel of local rulers began in 1592. The formidable exterior of red sandstone and white marble with its terraces and ramparts is reflected in Maota Lake. The fabulous interiors are a blend of Hindu and Mughal art and architecture. These former royal halls are decorated with intricate ivory, mirror, and glass work complemented by exquisite wall paintings. Then we will have an opportunity to see and learn about Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds). You will have time for photographs as we disembark and walk around this five-storied wonder, constructed from pink and red sandstone. It was built to give royal ladies views of life outside the palace since they never appeared in public. Hawa Mahal has a spectacular pyramidal façade and overhanging windows with latticed screens, domes, and spires.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Visit the City Palace, still the Maharaja's residence but largely given over to a museum containing rare manuscripts, fine specimens of Rajput and Mughal paintings, royal apparel and an armory. Last, visit Jantar Mantar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built by city founder Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, between 1727 and 1734, the Jantar Mantar is a collection of architectural astronomical instruments. The Jaipur observatory is the largest and best preserved in India.

Day Ten: Saturday, January 25 - School visit / Tea with University Students / fre...
Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: Transfer to Kalwar Village. Listen to an en route presentation: "Higher Education in India" given by the Group Leader. Once at the village, just outside of Jaipur, visit a local university and enjoy tea with university students to learn about their goals and aspirations. Then visit an elementary school supported by Road Scholar through a service learning volunteer project. Explore the school, meet with the teachers and interact with the students there.

Lunch: Enjoy a family hosted lunch at Castle Kalwar and learn about the family’s history and the fort that they are currently restoring.

Afternoon: Free time on your own to experience the essence of Jaipur as you take in the riot of colors and activities on a walk through the city's local market.

Dinner: Dinner at leisure at the hotel.

Note: This is a four-hour drive.

Morning: Check out of hotel and depart for Agra. Listen to an en-route presentation: "Mogul History and Architecture" by the Group Leader.

Lunch: Lunch at the hotel in Agra.

Afternoon: Cross to the Yamuna River in the late afternoon, visit Itimad ud Daulah. Itmad-ud-Daulah, also known as the ‘Baby Taj’, is the first monument in India built entirely in marble. The tomb was built between 1622 and 1628 by the Queen of Jahangir, Nurjahan as a memorial to her father, Mirza Ghiyas Beg. Then continue to Metab Bagh for a sunset view of the Taj Mahal and enjoy an on site presentation on the story of the Taj Mahal as the sun sets over the monument.

Dinner: Enjoy cocktail and a light dinner on a balcony at the Amarvilas overlooking the hotel’s magnificent gardens.

Day Twelve: Monday, January 27 - Agra / Agra Fort / Coach to Delhi
Note: Drive to Delhi is approximately 4 hours.

Morning: Set out in the early morning to explore the Taj Mahal. Taj Mahal is regarded as one of the eight wonders of the world. Built by the Mughals, the Muslim rulers of India, the Taj Mahal is built entirely of white marble. Its stunning architectural beauty is beyond adequate description, particularly at dawn and sunset. The Taj seems to glow in the light of the full moon. On a foggy morning, the visitors experience the Taj as if suspended when viewed from across the Jamuna river. Our local expert guide discusses the construction and the preservation of the monument. Next, visit Agra Fort. Originally planned as an impregnable military structure by Akbar, the Agra Fort, over a period of time, acquired all the elegance, lavishness and majesty of an imperial palace.

Day Thirteen: Tuesday, January 28 - Old Delhi / Gallery of Modern Art
Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: Depart for an excursion to Old Delhi. Drive past the Red Fort, and then go on a bicycle rickshaw ride around the heart of Chandini Chowk, - named for the silver merchants - navigating narrow alleyways, and a bustle of people, to end at Jama Masjid, the largest Muslim mosque in India. Continue on to the Raj Ghat - the cremation ground of Mahatma Gandhi.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: After lunch, explore Gallery of Modern Art with a talk on "Modern and Contemporary Art in India." In the late afternoon, visit a dance school and get a private performance from the students there.

Dinner: Farewell dinner at the hotel on the rooftop overlooking New Delhi.

Day Fourteen: Wednesday, January 29 - New Delhi / Late night flight home
Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: Transfer to Gandhi Smriti. Gandhi Smriti, is the sacred place where Mahatma Gandhi's epic Life ended on 30 January 1948. Mahatma Gandhi had lived in this house from 9 September 1947 to 30 January 1948.The museum in the building houses a number of articles associated with Gandhi's life and death. Learn about “Relevance of Gandhi in Today’s World” during a presentation by a local expert. Then walk around India Gate and Government buildings.

Lunch: Lunch at hotel.

Afternoon: Free afternoon or option to explore Qutub Minar. Explore Qutub Minar. Qutab Minar is a great masterpiece of Mughal architecture. The tall minaret was constructed in 1192 by Qutab-ud-din Aibak, and later completed by his successor Iltutmish. The soaring conical tower is an exquisite example of Indo-Islamic Afghan architecture. Qutub Minar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has survived the ravages of time impressively.

Dinner: Dinner is on your own.

Evening: Late night transfer to the airport for your flight home.
