Description: This stately hotel is a beautiful stone building, overlooking a small lake. It has a beautiful, spacious lobby with a fireplace and comfortable furniture for fellowship, puzzles and games, or just relaxing. The building was made from native stone that sparkles with mica. The dining room is in the same building as our housing and meeting facilities, and an elevator serves all floors (except for 7 steps going into one main meeting area). Of Montreat's 4,000 acres, 2,500 acres are dedicated to wilderness and are entered in the NC Registry of National Heritage Areas, and we have more than a dozen maintained hiking trails. Tennis courts also available. We will have board and card games in the lobby for your enjoyment, but if you have a favorite, please feel free to bring it along. An outdoor pool is located on the grounds, but it not open during our Road Scholar programs (only open June 1 - first week in August). However, a lovely fitness center (Cheshire Fitness) is located just a few miles away, and they offer daily or weekly rates for visitors. There are no TVs or phones in the individual housing rooms, but there is a TV in the main lobby, and guests can be reached by leaving a message at the front desk (staffed 24 hours a day). If it is urgent, the front desk staff will contact the coordinator who will deliver the message in person, otherwise a note will be left on the guest's housing door. A quiet reading room is also available, located near the main lobby of the Assembly Inn.

New windows have been installed throughout the building, as well as an upgraded heating and air-conditioning system. By May 2014, all guest rooms and public areas will be refurbished with new furniture, carpet, paint, art, lighting, and bedding. All housing accommodations will be in the Assembly Inn. Day One: Sunday, November 10 - Check In, Orientation, and getting to know one an...
Afternoon: Arrival at the Assembly Inn, check in between 3:00 - 5:30 p.m. Registration for our program will be from 4 - 5:30 in the lower lobby. Spend some time walking around the lovely grounds. Concrete and gravel paths surround Lake Susan... or venture out with your map to explore the campus.

Dinner: Join us for a scrumptious dinner in the Galax Dining Room, located on the first floor of the Assembly Inn. A full salad bar, choice of two different entrées, vegetables, rolls/bread, fruit and dessert will tempt your taste buds and your appetite. Sweet/unsweetened tea, milk, coffee, hot water w/ tea or cold water at our beverage stations. Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Evening: Our opening program/orientation will be at 7 p.m. in Convocation Hall (also in the Assembly Inn). We'll spend some time giving you some history and orientation to this special place, reviewing the schedule for the week, and you'll have an opportunity to meet and hear from your instructors. We know you're tired from your travels, so our evening with end around 8 p.m. with some "get to know you" activities. Refreshments, Fellowship/games and puzzles await those who desire to stay up a little later.

Aerobics for the Brain course, I Hear America Singing Course, and History of Broadway: Sing Along course (walk around Montreat optional)

Breakfast: Whether you like muffins, pancakes or waffles, bacon or sausage, grits or oatmeal, biscuits and gravy or a bowl of cereal and some fruit, breakfast in the Galax Dining Room, served from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. is sure to please! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!

Morning: Our first morning course is "Aerobics for the Brain," with Cappy Tosetti. Today we'll be exploring The Brain: Amazing – Astonishing – Riveting – Reassuring! Discuss the cognitive functions of the brain, myths about the brain as we grow older, and we’ll explore the scientific research and practice of using neurobics in our daily lives. (see note at the bottom of this paragraph for a welcome/intro from Cappy) We'll have a mid morning break and then come back to class for our presentation on "I Hear America Singing," with Anne Lough. The focus of our week will be the development of distinctly American popular song, as distinguished from the European cultured tradition. The roots of this development came from two sources, English folk song and sacred hymnody, both of which flourished throughout Colonial America for the first 150 years of our history. Explore popular folk songs of this era, the development of the shaped note tradition, William Billings, the “Father of American Choral Music” and the importance of popular song through the Revolutionary period. "Welcome to Aerobics for the Brain, where we’ll explore innovative ways to keep our brain healthy, fit and flexible by acting out spontaneously without fear or judgment. It’s about working in harmony with others, building trust, listening, responding and having fun. Explore and discover more about the wonders and workings of the brain in a relaxed atmosphere that invites spontaneity and a sense of adventure. It’s not a typical “instructor-at-the-podium” setting, but instead we’ll be seated in a circle and also gather in small groups each day. Improvisation is the heart of this class, along with music and movement that also help sharpen the brain, but have no fear, this is a comfortable and non-threatening environment that’s easy on the body, especially for someone who might need to sit, or for those in a wheelchair. Individuals can choose to participate or observe anytime.

Lunch: Lunch is served from 12:15 - 1:15 in the Assembly Inn Dining Room. The lunch menu varies each day, but normally features a salad bar, sandwich fixings, soup, and a yummy (light) dessert to top it off.

Afternoon: We'll begin our exploration of the History of Broadway, Sing Along, focusing on the 20s and 30s. The early days of broadway were the days of Irving Berlin, Rodgers & Hart, Kern and Hammerstein, George Gershwin, and Cole Porter. The shows were often silly and forgettable, and usually nothing more than vehicles for the stars involved. But the music was sublime. Throughout the week, we will discuss the writers and composers of the great shows, as well as some of the notable performers. We will examine how sociological forces (the changing roles of women and minorities, the youth movement of the 60’s) and technological innovations (radio, television, the LP album) have shaped the Broadway musical. Aerobics for the Brain course, I Hear America Singing Course, and History of Broadway: Sing Along course (optional hike)

Breakfast: A hearty breakfast is served from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. in the Assembly Inn Dining Room. Breakfast options change each day, but always include fresh fruit, cereal, yogurt, granola, baked pasteries, orange juice (and another juice option). Fresh coffee or hot tea will start your morning off right!

Morning: Tuesday morning, we start out again with Cappy and working out our brains! Aerobics for the Brain focuses today on Neuroplasticity. This will be an opportunity to understand more about how the human brain is able to reorganize and restore itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. We’ll also look at the benefits of movement and exercise and how important it is in keeping our gray matter sharp and focused. In addition to the specifics listed on each day's itinerary, we will explore these other topics during the week: --Music and the mind --Health benefits of laughter --The power of play --Non-verbal communication --Attitude is everything. We'll have a refreshment break mid-morning and come back to the classroom for our exploration of "I Hear America Singing," with Anne Lough. We begin to see the beginnings of commercial popular song with the development of the Minstrel Show and some of its star performers and composers. A look into the life and times of Stephen Foster brings to light the importance of his contribution to our body of American song.

Lunch: Lunch is served from 12:15 - 1:15 in the Assembly Inn Dining Room. Today's feature: Taco Tuesday! Enjoy Mexican dishes... build your own taco or burrito, or make a Mexican salad. All the trimmings make for a delicious and fun lunch...including tortilla chips and melted cheese... sour cream and peppers. Top it all off with some warm peach cobbler and ice cream. Yum Yum!

Afternoon: Our afternoon course, on the History of Broadway with David Bates, takes us into the 40s. Oklahoma revolutionized our whole way of thinking about the Broadway musical, and ushered in the Golden Age dominated by Rodgers and Hammerstein. A new unity of story, character, and music prevailed, and instead of being a harmless evening’s diversion, a Broadway show was now a serious work of art. 3:30 Optional hike in the mountains Free Time

Day Four: Wednesday, November 13 - Aerobics for the Brain course, I Hear America Sin...
Aerobics for the Brain course, I Hear America Singing Course, and History of Broadway: Sing Along course; free afternoon

Breakfast: Come on down to the Galax Dining room for another great breakfast buffet, served from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m.

Morning: Is your brain getting sore from working out? Nah!!! Cappy leads us through another exploration in Aerobics for the Brain, this time focusing on Effective “Active” Listening. A time to hone our mental skills and fine-tune our senses that help with communication and memory retention. After a refreshment break and fellowship in the lobby, we'll return to the classroom for more explorations of "I Hear America Singing," with Anne Lough. Folk Song continues in voice and heart through much of our expanding country during the Gold Rush, and as a powerful, emotional expression throughout the Civil War. The voices and musical gifts of African Americans are heard through the discovery, collection and performances of the Negro Spirituals. Commercial music publishing companies and commercial song writers begin to thrive and take the spotlight.

Afternoon: Free time to explore the area! We'll provide a listing of area attractions and directions for explorations on your own!

Evening: This evening, our course on History of Broadway with David Bates takes us into the 50s and 60s. The 50s were arguably Broadway’s finest decade, with classic shows by Lerner and Loewe, Frank Loesser, Adler and Ross, and Meredith Wilson. In the 60s, the shows became more daring, going into places such as Russian ghettos, Nazi nightclubs, and Spanish prisons that would have been unthinkable a decade earlier. And music, for better or worse, became more tightly integrated with the book. Stephen Sondheim and Jerry Herman are among the outstanding creative forces.

Morning: I know you! I know I know you... don't tell me.... it's.... oh shucks! Today, in our Aerobics for the Brain course with Cappy, let's explore Recognizing Faces – Remembering Names: A concern many people have, especially as we age. We’ll talk about short-term and long-term memory issues, and how we can navigate the challenges of remembering more efficiently on a daily basis. We'll have a refreshment break mid morning, and return to our class "I Hear America Singing," with Anne Lough. As the Minstrel Show declines in popularity, Variety Shows, Circuses and Vaudeville come into their own to fill the demand for popular entertainment and song. The music publishing industry continues to flourish and begins to center in New York City, contributing to the success of headliners and stars of Vaudeville and early musical theater. The popularity of Barbershop singing helps disperse popular song throughout homes and communities during the Gay 90’s and into the new century.

Lunch: Lunch is served from 12:30 - 1:30 in the Assembly Inn Dining Room

Afternoon: During our afternoon course on History of Broadway, with finish up our exploration with the 70s and beyond. Choreography, which had always been there, becomes a more important element. Some critics argue that the shows as the shows become more and more about scenic spectacle, they become less and less about memorable music. 3:30 - 5:30 free time

Dinner: Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Assembly Inn Dining Room

Evening: 7:00 - 8:00 evening program: games/cards/tv in lobby for fellowship (no movie tonight).

Breakfast: 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. breakfast in the Assembly Inn Dining Room

Morning: Friday morning, we start out with Cappy for our daily brain workout. Food for Thought: A lively team-building exercise about the foods we eat and how brain function is affected. We’ll wrap up our time together with a checklist of innovative ways to promote good brain health and function. After our mid-morning refreshment break, which will also allow you an opportunity to check out of your room (required by 11 a.m.), we will return to the classrom for our last exploration of "I Hear America Singing," with Anne Lough. “That piano sounds like a tin pan,” an observation that gave the New York music publishing business its name “Tin Pan Alley,” aptly describes the sounds and activity in uptown 28th street in the early 1900’s. Many of the ballads, minority songs and love songs of this era are still in our hearts and voices. The pivotal figure of Irving Berlin will take us up through the popular music of World War I. 12:15 - 12:30 closing program and saying good-byes

Lunch: 12:30 - 1:30 lunch in the Assembly Inn Dining Room (those who cannot stay for lunch may request a box lunch to take with them)
