- Orientation Meeting
Arrive To:
Room check-in after 4 PM. Road Scholar registration 5:30 PM in the conference room, meet the week's leader and receive the week's schedule, name badges and other information pertaining to the week's stay.
Dinner:
Dinner at lodge 6 PM.
Evening:
Orientation Meeting following dinner: Visit with fellow participants and introduce yourselves, review schedule logistics including classes, mealtimes and locations and transportation. This is your chance to ask questions and let us get to know you!

Autumn hikes offer fall colors; luminous aspens and vivid shrubbery. Hikers will experience low-angle light which is perfect for photography. Enjoy cooler temperatures, less bugs and fewer crowds. Off-site hike in Teton Canyon in the Jedediah Smith Wilderness Area
Note:
TETON CANYON HIKE: One-way in and back out, 3-6 miles, elevation gain/loss 500 - 1000 feet. At lower elevation, start at 6900 feet.
Breakfast:
Breakfast buffet at lodge.
Morning:
CLASS:Teton Habitats: discuss the 5 major habitats we visit during the week and plants and wildlife you are likely to see. Find out about their habitats and habits which enable them to thrive in mountain environments. Learn interesting facts about each species FIELD TRIP:Board bus for 20 minute ride to Teton Canyon 6960 feet. Choice of two canyon hikes, the North Fork or South Fork of Teton Creek. Each is 6 miles round-trip. Great place to observe canyon geology and wildlife. Both are gradual uphill hikes alongside Teton Creek. Good chance to determine how you hike above 7,000'. Adjust your pack, and see what you need for clothing and food hiking at elevations.
Lunch:
Sack lunch on the hike.
Afternoon:
Teton Canyon hike continued.
Dinner:
Dinner at local restaurant.
Evening:
CLASS: Fall Wildflowers and Berries / Wildlife Winter Adaptations: Fall Wildflowers and Berries; view images of 30 years of photography in the Tetons. Discover interesting facts and uses of the most common wildflowers and berries we may see this week. / How do animals and birds survive our harsh winter climate? Where do they find an unfrozen water source? Learn about unusual adaptations and strategies for coping with winter in the Tetons.

Note:
TAGGART LAKE HIKE: 4.7 mile loop, 7,000 feet. Uneven terrain; elevation gain/loss 300 feet.
Breakfast:
Breakfast buffet at lodge.
Morning:
All day field trip to Grand Teton National Park; Taggart/ Bradley Lake Hike at the base of the Grand Teton. Terrific views and photography moments on the east side of the Tetons, explanation of geology and ecology of the area, 4.7 mile loop, 7,000 feet.
Lunch:
Sack lunch in the field.
Afternoon:
Field trip continued; finish hike, Visits Craig Thomas Discovery Center in Moose, Park Headquarters and chance to hike to Murie Ranch OR Continue hike and water levels permitting Snake River raft scenic float within Grand Teton National Park; wonderful vistas of the east side of the Teton range; photographic opportunities; geology, ecology and history interpreted by excellent raft guides.
Dinner:
Dinner at a local Brew Pub in Victor, ID. Enjoy Teton Valley color; sample local brew if you so desire.
Evening:
EVENING OFF: Whew! It's been a long day.

- Hike to the alpine with an opportunity to summit a peak.
Note:
BANNOCK TRAIL HIKE to summit of Freds, 5.2 miles roundtrip, elevation gain/loss 2010 feet, from 7960' - 9970'.

Morning:
CLASS: Teton Geology: Why do the Tetons look the way they do? What you see in the mountains today is what we’ll discuss. We'll talk about 4.5 billion years of history in 45 minutes! HIKE: Experience the beautiful new Bannock trail, 5.2 miles round trip to the summit of Fred's Mountain. Exquisite views of South Leigh Canyon and the major Teton Peaks. Steady uphill climb on dirt single track, 2010' elevation gain/loss. Fossils, vistas, wildflowers abound! Possibility of extending the hike to climb Mary's Peak 9940'. Hiking elevation loss 770', gain 400', one-way. Wonderful 360 degree summit views of the major Teton peaks from this viewpoint within the range. Hike 2.6 miles back to base area, 1750' downhill.

Sack lunch in the field.
Afternoon:
Groups return to resort base.
Dinner:
Dinner at local restaurant.
Evening:
CLASS: Story of Grand Teton National Park: The original national park designation only included the Teton peaks, not the Jackson Hole Valley floor. Learn about the bitter fights and concessions made to valley residents to establish the park as we see it today.

Day Five: Thursday, October 03
- Hike in Bechler Corner of Yellowstone National Park to 2 waterfalls.
Note:
BECHLER TRAIL: Hike 4-5 miles at 7000' with negligible elevation change. Visit Bechler and Cave Falls.
Breakfast:
Breakfast at lodge.
Morning:
Hike in Yellowstone National Park. FIELD TRIP: to Bechler corner of Yellowstone. The Bechler Area is known as the "Cascade Corner" for its plethora of waterfalls. This little visited area of the park is accessed by traveling 19 miles through lush potato and barley fields in Idaho, entering Wyoming at 16 miles, entering Yellowstone the last tenth of a mile, where the road ends. Visit Cave Falls, a 30 foot drop spanning 100 feet across the Falls River. Cave Falls gets its name from a large cavern located behind the base of the falls. Hike through thick spruce and fir forest sprinkled with huckleberry bushes. View Bechler Falls, a pretty backcountry falls on the Bechler River. Round trip 4-5 miles. Visit with park rangers who live and work in this remote corner of Yellowstone.

Lunch on the trail.
Afternoon:
Continue hike along pristine river corridors with colorful foliage and scenic waterfalls.
Dinner:
Western barbecue dinner at the hotel fire circle.
Evening:
Closure and Mardy Murie Video: Discover the life of Mardy Murie, an important conservationist who helped establish the National Arctic Wildlife Refuge and who lived in Moose, Wyoming within Grand Teton National Park until her recent death at the age of 101.
