Day Three: Tuesday, August 20
- Niagara Falls: Maid of the Mist Boat Tour/Power Generating...
Niagara Falls: Maid of the Mist Boat Tour/Power Generating Station/Historic Niagara-on-the-Lake
Breakfast:
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel.
Morning:
EXCURSION: Maid of the Mist Boat Tour. Experience first-hand the plunging waters, thundering roar and spraying mist of the Falls on Maid of the Mist boat tour. Depart from the Canadian docks past the base of the American Falls, then into the basin of the magnificent Canadian Horseshoe Falls; this historical ride is North America's oldest tourist attraction. Departures are from Maid of the Mist Plaza. Set into the gorge wall, with all buildings below ground level, the large brown stone tower, covered in split brick mosaic carvings of vines, houses four high-speed elevators that take passengers down to the docks at the river’s edge. Taking a few steps up to the top of the tower provides a wonderful panoramic view of Niagara Falls and it is a very popular location for photographers. A recyclable souvenir raincoat is provided free with admission to help keep you dry from the mist and spray.
Morning:
FIELD TRIP: Sir Adam Beck Generating Station. From rushing rivers deep in Canada's wilderness comes the electricity that keeps our cities humming. As a renewable, emissions-free source of energy, hydroelectricity is "green," but flooding from hydroelectric dams has sometimes devastated traditional aboriginal livelihoods. Ranging from a single tidal turbine to Niagara Falls to a dam carved from a mountain, Canada's hydro projects today provide 60 per cent of its country's power. Participants will go behind the scenes on a visit to Sir Adam Beck Generating Station, an impressive example of a natural, non-polluting and reliable power source that has worked in harmony with the beauty of Niagara Falls. With an expert from the Niagara Parks Commission hear about how the falls has become the single biggest power supplier in the world.
Lunch:
Enjoy a picnic lunch.
Afternoon:
EXCURSION: Niagara-on-the-Lake. Set in the spectacular Niagara region between the shores of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, Niagara-on-the-Lake is situated in an area rich in culture, history and natural beauty. The surrounding countryside is beautifully patterned with orchards and vineyards. Drive through Queenston Heights and see some of the famous battlefields of the War of 1812. Learn about the history and experiences of the area, from wars, conflicts, rebellions, and threats that faced the city and the region in the course of its development. The first impression of Niagara-on-the-Lake is Old World charm and breathtaking pastoral beauty. We will stop at an ice cream shoppe to indulge in a treat and grandparents can take some free time to explore independently the town that has won the award for “Prettiest Town in Canada” and taken second place as “Prettiest Town in the World.”
Dinner:
Dinner in Niagara-on-the-Lake then return by coach to Toronto.
