Afternoon: This afternoon you'll visit the School of Advanced Research, including a walk through the Indian Arts Research Center.

Classes on the pueblos of the Rio Grande Valley and the Indian Market experience/ Field trip to Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and the Museum of International Folk Art/ Roundtable presentation(s) at Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian

Note: Standing up to an hour at a time at museums. Walking up to one mile over the course of the day over paved and packed dirt terrain.

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel

Morning: From 8:30-9:30 AM, learn about the pueblos of the Rio Grande Valley.

There will be a break from 9:30-9:45 AM.

From 9:45-10:45 AM, you'll hear about the Indian Market experience from a fellow participant who has attended many times.

At 11:00 AM, bus departs for Museum Hill.

Lunch: Lunch at Museum Hill Cafe from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM. There will be several menu choices, including a vegetarian item.

Afternoon: This afternoon, you'll attend an artists discussion at the Wheelwright Museum. The Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian is dedicated to contemporary and traditional American Indian art, with an emphasis on the Southwest. Its architectural design traces its inspiration to the traditional Navajo hogan and the Case Trading Post is modeled after some of the old trading posts of the southwest, creaky floors and all! The Case Trading Post will be hosting its annual Indian Market exhibition at this time. This must-see event will feature artists, roundtable discussions, conversations with collectors, and artist demonstrations.

You'll also visit the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and the Museum of International Folk Art. These two museums, part of the State of New Mexico museum system, are two of the finest museums in the world. Their collections are vast and beautifully displayed. Bus will return to hotel by 5:00 PM.

Dinner: Dinner at a selected restaurant from 5:30-6:30 PM

Evening: Presentation on Southwest jewelry from 7:00-8:30 PM

Artists' demonstrations at the Wheelwright Museum/ Visit to the Institute of American Indian Arts campus/ Indian Market preview

Note: Walking up to one mile over course of the day over paved and unpaved terrain, some relatively uneven. Standing up to two hours at Convention Center.

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel

Morning: At 8:30 AM, bus departs for the Wheelwright Museum for artist demonstrations from 9:00 AM to noon.

Bus departs at 12:00 PM for the campus of the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA).

Lunch: Lunch at Bon Appetit Cafe at IAIA

Afternoon: Guided exploration of the IAIA campus.

The bus departs for the hotel at 3:30 PM, where you'll have some free time from about 4:00-5:30 PM.

Bus departs for dinner destination at 5:30 PM.

Dinner: Dinner at a selected restaurant from 5:45-7:15 PM

Evening: At 7:15 PM, walk to the Santa Fe Convention Center, where you will attend the long-awaited Indian Market General Preview and see the juried submissions and the award-winning pieces.

This evening's event is a feast for the eyes, with the best of classification and division well represented.

Take the opportunity to note some of the artists' booth numbers so you can find more of their work at Indian Market.

Bus will depart for the hotel at approximately 9:30 PM.

Day Five: Saturday, August 17 - Indian Market
Note: Walking up to two miles over the course of the day over paved terrain

Standing for several hours during the day at Indian Market

Breakfast: If you're an early-bird Indian Market attendee, we'll have the breakfast room open with most of the food out by 6:00 AM (if you want to go to the Plaza this early, you'll need to walk - it's about six blocks). Regular breakfast from 7:00 to 8:00 AM

Morning: If you've chosen to walk downtown, plan to arrive at the Plaza for the official opening of Indian Market at 8:00 AM.

For those who want transportation, the bus will leave the hotel at 8:00 AM to take you downtown. Then, spend the day at Indian Market viewing the dazzling array of Native American arts and crafts from around the country.

Lunch: Lunch will be on your own - there will be many food vendors near the Plaza selling all kinds of traditional Native American and Northern New Mexican food, and there are many restaurants in the Plaza area as well.

Afternoon: Indian Market activities continue on the Plaza. When you're tired of looking at the artwork, you can find a seat and listen to the music, enjoy the demonstration booths or taste some of the native cuisine.

Dinner: Dinner will be on your own tonight to allow you to explore some of the local cuisine! There are many wonderful restaurants in the Plaza area and within walking distance of the Sage Inn.

Evening: Have a free evening to continue your Indian Market festivities or return to the hotel to rest after the long day.

Day Six: Sunday, August 18 - Indian Market/ Visit to the Pablita Velarde Museu...
Indian Market/ Visit to the Pablita Velarde Museum of Indian Women in the Arts/ Dinner at Hotel Santa Fe

Standing for long periods of time at Indian Market and the museum

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel

Morning: At 8:30 AM, bus departs for downtown Plaza, where Indian Market continues.

At 9:00 AM, the Native American style show will be presented on the stage in the center of the downtown Plaza. This event gives you an opportunity to see another form of Native American art, as the clothing designs are as intricate and magnificent as the pottery, jewelry, and paintings you'll be seeing this week.

Lunch: Meet at the Hilton Santa Fe Historic Plaza hotel for lunch from 12:30-1:30 PM.

Afternoon: After lunch, walk to the Pablita Velarde Museum of Indian Women in the Arts. The bus will depart for the hotel at 3:15 PM. You can return on the bus or spend some more time at Indian Market, returning to the hotel on your own.

Dinner: Meet at 5:45 PM and walk to the Hotel Santa Fe for dinner.

Evening: Program closing and "show and tell," where, if you'd like, you can share some of your experiences and "Indian Market treasures."

General OverviewSanta Fe abounds with museums. Within 3 blocks walking distance are the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Contemporary Native Art, Palace of the Governors, the New Mexico History Museum and the Archdiocese of Santa Fe Museum. A city bus goes to Museum Hill which includes the following museums: Museum of International Folk Art, Museum of Spanish Colonial Arts, Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian. Other in-town museums include: Site Santa Fe (contemporary art), Santa Fe Children's Museum, Bataan Memorial Military Museum, and El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe. Just outside town is El Rancho de las Golondrinas, a living history museum of a Spanish colonial village. Many galleries are located in the downtown area just 2 blocks away and along the historic home of many Santa Fe artists, Canyon Road. Santa Fe is famous for its many performance arts. Check the website below for current offerings. Hiking trails abound in and around the Santa Fe area, and there are many wonderful drives to Indian pueblos, Spanish villages or gorgeous scenery for either day trips or half-day trips. The Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce (www.santafechamber.com) will send a Visitor's Guide if you 505/983-7317 or contact the New Mexico Convention and Visitors Center (www.santafe.org) (1-800-777-2489) for a New Mexico Vacation Guide to learn about places to go and things to do while you're here. The Fort Marcy Recreation Center, just a block away from Ghost Ranch in Santa Fe, has a pool, gym, track and other programmed activities.
