Description: Southwestern Oregon Community College is a dry campus, meaning that no alcohol is allowed in housing. Our housing arrangements are apartment-style campus residences with four private bedrooms. There are two bathrooms on opposite ends of the apartment with double vanities. A common living room, dining room and kitchen with full-size stove and refrigerator are provided. The apartments are located on a freshwater lake with easy access to wooded walking trails.

Arrive To: Check-in is from 2-5pm. The schedule that follows is representative of the week. Some activities may differ due to the tides and other unforeseen circumstances.

Dinner: Enjoy a buffet style meal on campus at the Empire Cafe.

Evening: Following dinner, a program welcome/orientation by staff and Dr. Ron Metzger will take place. Participant will then have the opportunity to introduce themselves.

Day Two: Sunday, August 04 - Geology Introduction, Fossil presentation and ove...
Geology Introduction, Fossil presentation and overview, Beach walk at beautiful Horsfall beach and discovery time.

Note: Expert-led Lectures: Rock Types and Earthquakes in Oregon. Field Trip: Ocean and Fossil Observation

Breakfast: Breakfast at Empire Cafe on campus

Morning: Local Geology presentation and overview of rock types with Professor Ron Metzger.

Lunch: Lunch on campus at the Empire Cafe

Afternoon: A quick fossil observation in the field. Followed by a beach walk at Horsfall. Here we will discuss sand and beach dynamics.

Dinner: Empire Cafe, on campus

Evening: The day will conclude with an interesting presentation on past, present, and future earthquakes and tsunamis. "Earthquakes in Oregon" will be presented by Professor Metzger

Day Three: Monday, August 05 - Archaelogical Site and Rogue River Jet Boat Trip....
Archaelogical Site and Rogue River Jet Boat Trip. Feel the spray of the Rogue River on your face as you race 32 miles up and then down the Rogue River in Jerry's Jet Boats. Eat dinner served "family style" in authentic "Lucas Lodge".

Note: Field Trip: Cape Blanco Lighthouse Excursion: Jerry's Jet Boat

Breakfast: Empire Cafe

Morning: Climb to the top of the Cape Blanco Lighthouse for a magnificent view of the area. Afterwards, we will have an archaeological discussion of the site. Then we depart for Gold Beach/Rogue River

Lunch: Enjoy a picnic lunch in the beautiful Humbug Mountain State Park. Sit under a Myrtlewood tree, too!

Afternoon: Jump on board! Our group will ride on the World Famous Jerry's Jet Boats as we go 32 miles up the Rogue River. The ride will be narrated by the fabulous navigators, as we hope to spot ospreys, bald eagles, black bears, and other wild animals! Be sure to wear many layers, stockings, caps, and gloves. Bring binoculars and cameras in protective containers so they don't get wet. Hang on tight and have a great experience.

Dinner: Dinner will be provided by Lucas Lodge up the Rogue River. Meals will be served "family style". Which means you all sit at long tables and pass the food around the table just like you do at home. The home is the original Lucas home still owned and operated by the original family.

Evening: We get back down the river and board the bus around 8:00 p.m. Tired, sometimes cold, but very happy. Arrival back to campus will be around 10:00p.m.

Day Four: Tuesday, August 06 - Dune Buggy Ride and Free Afternoon with Optional ...
Dune Buggy Ride and Free Afternoon with Optional Trip. Ride an Oregon Dune Buggy exploring the vastness of the beautiful Oregon Sand Dunes with an experienced guide.

Note: Field Trips: Dune buggy ride and hike

Breakfast: Empire Cafe

Morning: A wonderful start to the morning! The group will ride a Giant Dune Buggy for 8 miles of dunes and 2 miles of beach. In this 1-hour scenic tour, we will learn about and experience first-hand, the size of these great dunes.

Lunch: Picnic Lunch at Heceta Head State Park. Walk along the beach and enjoy the splendid sight of the lighthouse.

Afternoon: Free afternoon or optional Oregon Dunes Hike.

Dinner: Empire Cafe

Evening: Free Time

Learn about the Oregon Resource Corporation. Explore: Bandon Marsh, Tupper Rock, Race Rock and Old Town Bandon.

Note: Field Trips: ORC and exploring Bandon Lecture: Cape Arago

Breakfast: Empire Cafe

Morning: The Oregon Resource Corporation has been in Coos Bay for a few years mining for chromite. Though we cannot walk in the site, we will drive through and learn about their plans and projects.

Lunch: Empire Cafe

Afternoon: You can visit many of these stops in Bandon, but here you will have the opportunity to learn their significance: the Coquille Lighthouse base, Bandon Marsh, Tupper Rock, and the legend of Face Rock. After, enjoy a stroll down Old Town Bandon.

Dinner: Empire Cafe

Evening: A Cape Arago History Lesson presented by a member of the Coquille Indian Tribe.

Day Six: Thursday, August 08 - Explore Geological Sites along Cape Arago Highway...
Explore Geological Sites along Cape Arago Highway presented by Professor Ron Metzger. Then, for cultural history, we will stop at the Coquille Tribal Headquarters.

Note: Field Trip: Archaeological sites along Cape Arago and the Coquille Tribal Headquarters.

Breakfast: Empire Cafe

Morning: Explore various archaeological sites along Cape Arago Highway presented by Professor Ron Metzger. Prepare for a possible 1/2 mile hike in a very mussy and muddy estuary. Wear good hiking shoes or shoes that can get very muddy.

Lunch: Picnic Lunch at Shore Acres. You will have the opportunity to visit the beautiful botanical garden packed with history, wildlife, and great views of crashing waves.

Afternoon: We will meet with a member of the Coquille Tribe for an overview of local cultural Indian history and visit the Coquille Plankhouse

Dinner: Farewell dinner.

Day Seven: Friday, August 09 - Journey Back Home.
Depart From: Please return your keys and lanyard for your end-of-the-week DVD at the Lighthouse Depot.

Breakfast: Enjoy breakfast at the Empire Cafe. Pack your bags and say farewell. Check-out will be at the Lighthouse Depot. Thank you for coming and have a safe trip home.
