Description: A two-story retreat center situated about 150 yards from the Atlantic Ocean/beach. The Isle of Palms is a barrier island, residential in nature, about 15 miles north of downtown historic Charleston SC. The Isle of Palms is considered as prime real estate along the East Coast. There are major shopping areas, pharmacies, a hospital, an urgent care center, about five miles away in Mount Pleasant.

Day One: Sunday, May 26 - Registration and Greetings/Welcome and Orientatio...
Afternoon: Registration begins at 4:00 PM in lobby. Coffee, tea, water, fruit, snacks, and trail mix provided upon arrival and available 24 hours a day!

Dinner: Participants may choose from two entrees for evening meals after the first day. Catered meals receive rave reviews, especially the seafood fare. Dietary restrictions accommodated.

Evening: A warm Southern welcome awaits you from the Road Scholar program coordinator/host and the resident manager. Orientation to the retreat center and program schedule. Enjoy fellowship with other participants.

Day Two: Monday, May 27 - Morning Classes on Architecture and Music/Bus Tou...
Morning Classes on Architecture and Music/Bus Tour of Historic Charleston/Learn about Gullah Culture and History

Breakfast: Several copies of the "Charleston Post and Courier," and "USA Today" are available each morning. Notify resident manager if you would like to purchase personal copies of either paper.

Morning: Stretch breaks at midpoint of class time. Thirty minute break between classes. During breaks enjoy ocean views and fresh air from our second floor deck just outside of the classroom meeting area.

Lunch: The lunch menu usually consists of soups, sandwiches, and salads, with fresh fruit always available.

Afternoon: A professional bus tour of the historic Charleston area leaves our center at 1:00 PM. There are stops at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina (includes snack bar for ice cream and rest stop) and the Charleston Visitors Center. After a drive around the famous Battery with gorgeous harbor views, there is a stop at historic St. Michael's Episcopal Church. Tour includes a drive around Ft. Moultrie on Sullivan's Island. En route, you will receive a comprehensive overview of historic Charleston and surrounding areas by a licensed tour guide. This tour will whet your appetite for sights to see during free periods.

Dinner: Our chef knows how to impress with his local delights.

Evening: See a sweetgrass basket-making demonstration by a descendant of former enslaved West Africans. Learn poignant story of the Gullah people, their culture and language that is fast-disappearing in the 21st century.

Day Three: Tuesday, May 28 - Presentations on Architecture and Music/Piccolo S...
Breakfast: Coffee and newspapers available after 6 a.m.

Morning: Stretch breaks at midpoint of classes. There is a one-half hour break between the two class periods.

Lunch: Lunch is at 12:00 noon. Variety in lunch menu of soups, salads, sandwiches.

Afternoon: After lunch, you are free to explore a world-class tourist mecca knowns as Historic Charleston. Retreat center staff available to answer your questions. Often, those without transportation are invited to join participants with transportation to enjoy a local destination together. Tom Fazio golf courses at Wild Dunes Resort, about two miles north of retreat center. Check out the website: "www.charlestoncvb.com" for local sights, tours, gardens. Also, check "www.sciway.net" for additional information. You may enjoy walks on the beach, which is about 150 yards from the retreat center.

Dinner: Meals are served promptly. After an adventurous day, you'll be ready for a tasty meal.

Evening: Enjoy a Piccolo Spoleto event this evening. Event will be chosen as soon as Piccolo Spoleto schedule is published, usually in early April.

Day Four: Wednesday, May 29 - Presentation and Excursion/Walking Tour in Histor...
Presentation and Excursion/Walking Tour in Historic District/Spoleto Event/Wine and Cheese

Breakfast: Our resident manager LOVES to cook breakfast for you! You can choose hot or cold breakfast, along with fresh fruit, juices, hot coffee, tea.

Morning: Morning architecture class for one hour. Then take an excursion to see juried artists' demonstrations in Marion Square and a selected show at the Charleston City Art Gallery at Waterfront Park. (Restrooms nearby).

Lunch: At noon, enjoy a delightful lunch in a tearoom at a nearby church parish hall. We will have one hour for lunch, that includes a gift shop and rest stop.

Afternoon: After lunch, we'll have transportation to Charleston's famous Battery and historic homes district. Accompanied by an architectural historian, you will see first hand the exterior beauty of colonial and antebellum homes as you slowly walk just a few blocks. After a rest stop at the Charleston Visitors Center, you will be returned to the retreat center around 4 PM.

Dinner: At 6 PM, our chef has a delicious meal waiting for you.

Evening: Celebrate a gala evening with wine and cheese before shuttles take us to one of Charleston's historic theatres for a delightful performance. Specific event to be chosen after publication of Piccolo Spoleto schedule in early April 2008.

Day Five: Thursday, May 30 - Presentations on Architecture and Music/Free Time...
Presentations on Architecture and Music/Free Time/Piccolo Spoleto Event

Breakfast: Breakfast, hot or cold, is always good, especially when prepared by our resident manager.

Morning: Final presentations by these professionals who have been sharing with you all week.

Lunch: Lunch is at 12:00 Noon.

Afternoon: To Maritime Center for Harbor of History boat tour, with stop at Morris Island in Charleston harbor. Marine biologist, historian on board. Guaranteed to delight and inform. Look for shells and sharks' teeth while on Morris Island. Catch sights of pelicans and dolphins as well. Pass by Patriots' Point (largest maritime museum) from harbor vantage point.

Dinner: Our chef knows how to prepare local delights.

Evening: A "Graduation Celebration" brings us together for fun, fellowship and professional entertainment. Musician specializes in Celtic music, hammered dulcimer. Our ice cream bar will draw out your creativity as you compose an ice cream sundae!

Day Six: Friday, May 31 - Morning Presentations/Lunch
Breakfast: The smell of fresh coffee gets most "sleepy heads" into the dining room.

Morning: Learn amazing details of the CSS Hunley and her crew from an expert, who also coordinated the funerals for the eight crew found on board. Check out of rooms between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. classes. Return keys, evaluations, strip beds and place linens in hallway for pick up. All participants must be out of rooms by 10:00 a.m. For those using public transportation, a secure area is provided for luggage until your departure from the retreat center.

Lunch: Lunch is served at 11:30 AM. You may eat lunch in the dining room, or prepare a "To Go" box for your journey. Kindly note "To Go" boxes not available until 11:30 AM. Please see resident manager if public transportation arrangements are needed.
