A visit to the Buffalo Bill Historic Center gives an introduction to the Bighorn Basin, its high desert ecosystem and Western history.

Morning: Walk to nearby Buffalo Bill Historical Center, a Smithsonian Affiliate. Docent lead tour through the Buffalo Bill Museum will highlight the morning with time to explore the Historic Center.

Lunch: Lunch at museum.

Afternoon: A Birds of Prey presentation will begin the afternoon activities at the Historical Center. Grandparents and grandchildren will have time to explore at any of the Center's five museumson their own - Whitney Gallery of Western Art, Buffalo Bill Museum, Cody Firearms Museum, Plains Indian Museum or Draper Museum of Natural History. Generations can walk back to motel for free time in the pool, resting, shopping or exploring the town.

Dinner: Dinner at nearby restaurant; walk two blocks.

Evening: Overview of the amazing Yellowstone ecosystem.

Field day to Yellowstone National Park to the Lake and Old Faithful areas for thermal features, hiking and wildlife.

Morning: Board transportation to Yellowstone; travel west through Shoshone National Forest while onboard interpretation introduces the Yellowstone supervolcano. Enter the park's east gate and traverse 8,530' Sylvan Pass to Yellowstone Lake. When rumors and tall tales of "Colter's Hell" filtered east, Congress dispatched an expedition in 1871 to confirm Yellowstone's wonders; Dr. Ferdinand Hayden, a member of the expedition reported back and his account of "Wonderland" played a major role in the establishment of the world's first national park - Yellowstone. He wrote of Yellowstone Lake, "The lake lay before us, a vast sheet of quiet water, of a most delicate marine hue, one of the most beautiful scenes I have ever beheld. Such a vision is worth a lifetime, and only one of such marvelous beauty will ever greet human eyes." Follow its timbered north shore to the Fishing Bridge area where Yellowstone River exits the lake, then on east and south to West Thumb Geyser Basin. Yellowstone Lake is North America's largest high elevation lake at 20 miles long, 14 miles wide and more than 390 feet deep at its deepest point. It lies across the caldera of a volcano that erupted about 640,000 years ago. Hear about current volcanic activity in the lake, resurgent domes and more. Recently, a submersible remotely operated vehicle took samples and pictures of the lake bottom; images revealed active hydrothermal vents, spires, fissures, steep-sided craters and more. Learn about these discoveries. An exploratory walk at West Thumb Geyser Basin includes many thermal features including beautiful Abyss Pool, one of the park's deepest pools and Fishing Cone which has a very interesting recent history.

Afternoon: Adventuring seventeen miles further down the road and over the Continental Divide twice brings generations into the Heart of Yellowstone, to Old Faithful and the Upper Geyser Basin. Experience Old Faithful's signature eruption and a guided hike at Geyser Hill to experience all four thermal features - geysers, mudpots, fumaroles and hot springs. See them, walk through and feel clouds of steam, smell sulfur, hear hissing fumaroles or steam vents and bubbling, plopping mudpots. Enjoy a wonderland of unique features, beautiful colors and spouting geysers. Find out about hardy life forms that have adapted to boiling water. Enjoy historic and legendary Old Faithful Inn, designed by Robert Reamer and built during the winter of 1903-04. This structure is one of the few remaining log hotels in the country. Time at the Old Faithful Visitor Center for the main exhibit areas: Why Geysers Erupt, Hot Water Treasures, Hot Spring Ecology and Scientific Research as well as the educational book store and auditorium,

Dinner: Dinner at Lake Cafeteria.

Evening: After dinner discovery walk for kids along the shore showcases shoreline habitat, waterfowl, fisheries and wildlife. Grandparents welcome to come along or may wish to shop or enjoy the grand panorama from Lake Hotel's spacious, glassed-in Great Room. Evening return to Cody provides wildlife spotting opportunities.

An adventure at Red Rock Canyon a geology lesson and an evening at the rodeo.

Note: Walk up to 1 1/2 miles at the Red Rock Canyon area.

Morning: Expedition to Red Rock Canyon for hands-on discovery. Wear hiking shoes or boots and find out about earth's layers here by examining several - the massive granite formation layer, sandstone layer and limestone/dolomite cliff and boulder forming layers near Buffalo Bill Dam. The Dam was completed in 1910 and supplies irrigation for 93,000 acres of farmland in the Bighorn Basin. A walk to the base of the dam at canyon's center includes a scramble on the limestone layer here. Continue on to a gypsum area for treasure collecting; find fossils including gryphea and belemnites, gypsum crystals and agates to take home.

Afternoon: Geology 101 presentation explains basics and reviews morning adventure. Free time.

Dinner: Shuttle to dinner. Enjoy being serenaded with cowboy songs and poetry.

Evening: Enjoy watching cowgirls and cowboys perform at the Cody Night Rodeo; see bronco riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing and more.

Morning: Meet your mountain horse and find out about horse handling and tack then head out onto a nearby trail for a morning's riding venture among Wyoming's wide open high desert country. Enjoy the creak of saddle leather and appreciate the heady aromas of sagebrush and high mountain air blowing down off the Big Horn, Bridger and Absaroka Mountains.
