 Description: The hotel has recently been completely remodeled, and offers cheerful Southwestern decor throughout. Of particular interest to our participants is the easy access to transportation to other parts of the city. There is a public bus stop right in front of the hotel, and buses run frequently to the downtown area, to the museums, and other parts of Santa Fe. There is convenient shopping nearby as well, with drug and grocery stores within a few minutes' walk. Several shopping centers surround the hotel, so bookstores, clothing stores, restaurants, hobby and craft stores and many others are nearby.

Day Two: Friday, July 19 - Classes: Santa Fe History, Georgia O'Keeffe, and the Santa Fe... 
Classes: Santa Fe History, Georgia O'Keeffe, and the Santa Fe Opera/Lunch at India Palace Restaurant/Exploration of Downtown Santa Fe/Santa Fe Opera performance of "The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein"

Note: Walking up to one mile over uneven paved and packed dirt terrain during the course of the day; negotiating a few steps to get on and off bus and walking about 1 block between the bus and the Opera house

Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel dining room from 7:00 to 8:00 AM

Morning: Enjoy classes about the Santa Fe Opera, Santa Fe's history, and the art of Georgia O'Keeffe. Classes are from 8:00 AM to noon with two breaks scheduled during the morning. Bus departs the hotel at 12:15 PM for lunch destination.

Lunch: Buffet lunch at India Palace Restaurant from 12:30-1:30 PM

Afternoon: At 1:45 PM, leave restaurant for a guided walking and driving exploration of Santa Fe, "The City Different." Stops include Santa Fe's historic downtown Plaza and other sites as selected by instructional guide. From 3:00-4:00 PM explore the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. Bus arrives back at the hotel by about 4:30 PM.

Dinner: Dinner at the hotel from 6:00-7:00 PM

Evening: Bus departs at 7:15 PM for tonight's performance of Offenbach's "The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein." Offenbach's riotous opera features the fabulous mezzo-soprano Susan Graham in the title role. Spoiled and domineering, the Grand Duchess gets what she wants - until she set her sights on the young soldier Fritz (Paul Appleby). Her amorous pursuit mobilizes everything we need for a howling good time: wealth, wine and wicked satire. Performance begins at 8:30 PM. Bus will return to hotel LATE.

Day Three: Saturday, July 20 - Classes on the Traditional and Contemporary Art Scene and the Santa... 
Classes on the Traditional and Contemporary Art Scene and the Santa Fe Opera/Performance at Santa Fe Opera of Verdi's "La Traviata"

Note: Walking up to one mile over course of the day over paved terrain with some incline (at SFe Opera). Walking from bus into Opera house and back (one block each way over paved terrain).

Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel dining room from 8:00 to 9:00 AM

Morning: Enjoy classes about the contemporary art scene, which retains much of the traditional art familiar to the area but explores many new techniques and ideas, and the Santa Fe Opera season. Classes are from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with two breaks scheduled during the morning.

Lunch: Lunch in the hotel dining room at 1:00 PM

Afternoon: You'll have some free time after lunch to explore more of Santa Fe on your own or relax and rest up for tonight's performance.

Dinner: Dinner at the hotel from 6:00-7:00 PM

Evening: Bus departs at 7:00 PM to take you to the Santa Fe Opera for a performance of Verdi's "La Traviata." Honoring the bicentennial of Verdi's birth, the Santa Fe Opera revives on of his most popular operas. Glamour and gaiety are on full display in director-designer Laurent Pelly's vision of the Parisian demimonde, but so is a much darker side. Whle elegant gowns and jewels create a glittering tableau, the partygoers of "La Traviata" inhabit a cynical world of power relations. Making her Santa Fe Opera debut as Violetta is American soprano Brenda Rae, who has generated excitement in starring roles in Europe. Tenor Michael Fabiano is Alfredo, Violetta's lover.

Bus returns to the hotel LATE.

Day Four: Sunday, July 21 - Wine and Cuisine Classes and Wine Tasting/ Rancho de Chimayo... 
Wine and Cuisine Classes and Wine Tasting/ Rancho de Chimayo Lunch/Santuario de Chimayo Visit/Local Winery Visit/Dinner on Your Own

Note: Walking up to one mile over paved and packed dirt terrain over course of the day

Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel dining room from 7:00 to 8:00 AM

Morning: Presentation on the growing wine production industry in New Mexico and cuisine of the area from 8:30-11:45 AM with breaks. You'll also have a wine tasting during this time.

Lunch: Bus departs at 12:00 PM for lunch at historic Rancho de Chimayo. Lunch will be from 12:45-1:45 PM.

Afternoon: After lunch, visit lovely El Santuario de Chimayo, fondly known as "the Lourdes of Northern New Mexico" because of the 'healing earth' found in one of the rooms near the altar area. You'll also see some of the traditional area weaving shops and other local sites. At 3:00 PM, the bus will depart for a visit to a local winery.

The bus will depart for the hotel at about 4:15 PM, arriving back in Santa Fe by 5:00 PM. You can be dropped off in the downtown area, as dinner tonight is on your own, or return to the hotel.

Dinner: Dinner on your own tonight; your group leader can provide suggestions for your dining pleasure both in the downtown area and the area surrounding the hotel.

Evening: Free evening. Your group leader can make some suggestions for evening entertainment, if you wish. If you don't return to the hotel on our bus at 4:45 PM, you'll be responsible for getting yourself back to the hotel, either via city bus or taxi.

Day Five: Monday, July 22 - New Mexico's History/Visit to Pecos National Historical Park/Santa Fe... 
New Mexico's History/Visit to Pecos National Historical Park/Santa Fe Opera Backstage Visit/State Capitol Art Collection

Note: Walking up to one mile over course of the day on paved terrain at Pecos National Historical Park. Walking up and down several flights of stairs during afternoon as well. Reduced activity backstage visit with advance notice. Standing up to an hour at State Capitol

Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel dining room from 7:00 to 8:00 AM

Morning: Enjoy a class about New Mexico's history from 8:00-9>00 AM. Bus departs at 9:15 AM for a field trip to Pecos National Historical Park; your group leader will offer more information on the area's history while on the bus.

The bus will depart for return to the hotel at 11:30 AM.

Lunch: Lunch at the hotel from 12:30-1:30 PM

Afternoon: Bus departs at 1:30 PM for a backstage visit to the Santa Fe Opera. This visit involves some walking uphill and several flights of stairs. If you can't handle the stairs, please let the Road Scholar Santa Fe office know in advance (505-983-0613), and we'll arrange for a modified tour for you.

At 3:00 PM, the bus will depart for Santa Fe, where you'll visit the New Mexico State Capitol building and, with a guide, view its wonderful art collection; there are many paintings by famous New Mexico artists.

Dinner: Dinner at the hotel from 6:00-7:00 PM

Evening: Class about contemporary Santa Fe and program closing from 7:00 to 8:30 PM

Day Six: Tuesday, July 23 - Breakfast followed by hotel check-out and departure 
Breakfast: From 7:00-8:00 AM, we'll have breakfast in the dining room at the hotel. You may depart any time after breakfast. Check-out time from the hotel is 12:00 PM.

Morning: Independent departures from the hotel. Checkout time is by 12:00 noon.
