Santa Fe's History/Georgia O'Keeffe/Lunch at India Palace Restaurant/Walking Exploration of Downtown Santa Fe/State Capitol Art Collection/Georgia O'Keeffe Museum

Note: Walking up to one mile over uneven paved terrain during the course of the day; standing up to one hour in Capitol Building and O'Keeffe Museum (there is limited seating available if needed), negotiating a few steps to get on and off bus

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel from 7:00 to 8:00 AM

Morning: Enjoy classes about Santa Fe and about Georgia O'Keeffe.

Classes are from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, with two breaks scheduled during the morning.

Bus departs the hotel at 12:00 PM for lunch destination.

Lunch: Buffet lunch at India Palace Restaurant

Afternoon: After lunch, there will be a guided walking and driving exploration of Santa Fe, "The City Different." Stops include Santa Fe's historic downtown Plaza and other sites as selected by instructional guide.

From 2:45-3:45 PM, visit the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.

From 4:00-5:00 PM explore the New Mexico State Capitol building and view its wonderful art collection; there are many paintings by famous New Mexico artists.

Bus departs for the hotel at 5:00 PM.

Classes on Traditional and Contemporary Art/Guided Backstage Visit at Santa Fe Opera/Performance at Santa Fe Opera of Mozarts "The Marriage of Figaro"

Note: Walking up to one mile over course of the day over paved terrain with some incline (at SFe Opera). Walking up and down several flights of stairs during afternoon as well. Reduced activity backstage visit with advance notice. Walking from bus into Opera house and back (one block each way over paved terrain)

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel from 7:00 to 8:30 AM

Morning: Enjoy classes about Santa Fe's traditional and contemporary art scene, which retains much of the traditional art familiar to the area but explores many new techniques and ideas, and the Santa Fe Opera season. Classes are from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, with two breaks scheduled during the morning.

Lunch: Lunch at the hotel from 12:00-1:00 PM

Afternoon: At 1:30 PM, bus will depart front of hotel for field trip to Santa Fe Opera for a backstage visit. This visit involves some walking uphill and several flights of stairs. If you can't handle the stairs, please let the Road Scholar Santa Fe office know in advance (505-983-0613), and we'll arrange for a modified tour for you.

Return to Santa Fe by 3:30 PM.

Dinner: Dinner at the hotel from 6:00 to 7:00 PM

Evening: Bus departs hotel at 7:15 PM for tonight's performance of Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro." Based on a daring play by Beaumarchais, a French supporter of the American Revolution whose modern ideas challenged traditional thinking on class and privilege, its bold assertion of human dignity is present throughout Lorenzo da Ponte's libretto and Mozart's score. It takes the form of a dizzying sex farce that culminates in a profound expression of redemptive love. The cast includes the return of rising star Susanna Phillips as the Countess Almaviva and Daniel Okulitch as her wayward husband. John Nelson conducts.

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel from 7:30 to 8:30 AM

Morning: Presentation on area cuisine and the growing wine production industry in New Mexico from 8:30-11:45 AM with a break. You'll also have a wine tasting during this time.

Lunch: Bus departs at 12:00 PM for lunch at historic Rancho de Chimayo. Lunch will be from 12:45-1:45 PM.

Afternoon: After lunch, visit lovely El Santuario de Chimayo, fondly known as "the Lourdes of Northern New Mexico" because of the 'healing earth' found in one of the rooms near the altar area.

You'll also see some of the traditional area weaving shops and other local sites.

Upon return to Santa Fe at about 4:00 PM, the bus will drop you off (if you wish) in the downtown area, as dinner tonight is on your own and a free evening follows. If you wish to go back to the hotel, the bus will take you there at this time.

Dinner: Dinner on your own tonight; your group leader can provide suggestions for your dining pleasure both in the downtown area and the area surrounding the hotel.

Evening: Free evening. Your group leader can make some suggestions for evening entertainment, if you wish. You'll be responsible for getting yourself back to the hotel, either via city bus or taxi.

New Mexico History and Santa Fe Opera Classes/Visit to Pecos National Historical Park/Santa Fe Opera Performance of Offenbach's "The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein"

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel from 7:00 to 8:00 AM

Morning: Enjoy classes about history and the opera you'll see tonight, "The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein."

Lunch: Lunch at the hotel from 12:00 to 1:00 PM

Afternoon: Bus will depart for Pecos National Historical Monument at 1:15 PM. Return to the hotel in Santa Fe by 4:30 PM.

Dinner: Dinner and program closing from 6:00-7:00 PM at the hotel

Evening: At 7:15 PM, bus departs for tonight's performance of Offenbach's "The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein." Offenbach's riotous opera features the fabulous mezzo-soprano Susan Graham in the title role. Spoiled and domineering, the Grand Duchess gets what she wants - until she set her sights on the young soldier Fritz (Paul Appleby). Her amorous pursuit mobilizes everything we need for a howling good time: wealth, wine and wicked satire. Performance begins at 8:30 PM. Bus will return to hotel LATE.
