Afternoon: Check in to motel and register with Road Scholar coordinator in lobby between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. The Anchorage Motel is located in downtown Bar Harbor and is within a short walk of downtown shops and attractions. Our first gathering will be at 4:30, with a walking tour of Victorian Bar Harbor at 5:00.

Dinner: We'll dine at the Portside Grill in downtown Bar Harbor, with a Down East lobster dinner highlighting our program on the last night. Each evening there will be a designated entrée; Portside will also offer a "light" alternative every night of Chicken Caesar Salad or grilled portabello mushroom. Tonight we'll have baked haddock with boiled new potatoes and veggies; rolls and butter; dessert; and choice of beverage.

Evening: Evening free to explore Bar Harbor area.

Welcome, orientation, bike fitting/Acadia National Park/Cadillac Mountain

Breakfast: We’ll start our day at a convenient downtown restaurant, where we'll enjoy buffet selections along with juice and coffee.

Morning: Welcome and orientation, followed by custom-fitting of bicycles. We offer the choice of hybrid or mountain bikes, both with 24 speeds. Then we’ll start our bicycling week on the carriage trails of Acadia National Park, built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. These unique roads are closed to all motorized traffic and are ideal for biking. We'll pedal by Eagle Lake and Jordan Pond, scenic glacial lakes surrounded by mountains.

Lunch: Today we'll enjoy a picnic lunch on the tea lawn of Jordan Pond house in Acadia National Park. Our lunches will be taken “in the field” each day as we are doing our activities. A variety of sandwich offerings will be available.

Afternoon: After lunch, we'll continue our cycling trip on the carriage roads. There's an optional side trip up Day Mountain, with gorgeous views south across the Gulf of Maine, with the Cranberry Islands dotting the seascape. We'll also pass Bubble Pond, with the craggy western face of Cadillac Mountain rising out of the water.

Dinner: Tonight we'll enjoy a green salad; chicken pot pie; rolls and butter; dessert; and choice of beverage. Our light alternatives will again be available.

Evening: We’ll take a scenic drive up Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the eastern seaboard, taking in the marvelous 360-degree views from the summit.

Morning: Before biking, we'll head to Oldfarm, the ruins of the home of George B. Dorr, who's considered the father of Acadia National Park, and we'll learn the fascinating story of how the park was founded and how it came to be the only park in the entire national park system in which the land was donated rather than purchased by the government. Afterwards, we’ll bike the famed Park Loop Road of Acadia National Park, one of the most spectacular oceanfront boulevards in the United States. Along our way, we'll pass Champlain Mountain, with its sheer east face and the challenging "Precipice" hiking trail; rugged overlooks where we'll gaze eastward towards Egg Rock Light; and Sand Beach, which is actually composed of crushed sea shells.

Lunch: Picnic lunch at Sand Beach in Acadia National Park, with a wide variety of sandwich offerings.

Afternoon: We'll continue our cycling trip, stopping to view Thunder Hole, where under the right conditions spumes of spray are sent skyward from the powerful Atlantic; Otter Cliffs, with a vertical drop of more than a hundred feet; and Seal Harbor Beach, which overlooks a portion of the former Rockefeller estate.

Dinner: Tonight we'll have a green salad; meatloaf; mashed potatoes and veggies; rolls and butter; and dessert. Our light alternatives will also be available.

Evening: A naturalist will lead a walking tour of either the Otter Cliffs section of Acadia National Park or the Shore Path in Bar Harbor, talking about issues of interest to the Gulf of Maine. Be sure to bring your cameras to capture the beauty of these areas.

Morning: We’ll give those biking muscles a rest this morning, hiking one of the mountains of Mount Desert Island. Guides will choose a suitable route that will challenge participants and provide terrific views of the island. A possible route: Gorham Mountain, which offers spectacular views over the Gulf of Maine and the outlying islands of the coast.

Lunch: We’ll return from our morning activities and picnic at Albert Meadow, with a beautiful view across Frenchman Bay.

Afternoon: Free afternoon to explore Acadia National Park and Mt. Desert Island

Evening: Free time to explore Bar Harbor

Morning: Today we’ll head to the magnificent Schoodic Peninsula for our bicycling adventure, pedaling out to Schoodic Point, where we’ll lunch as waves crash against the boulders lining the shore. Schoodic marks the beginning of the "bold coast" area of Down East Maine, where few visitors go. Along our route, we'll pass Victorian mansions on Grindstone Neck and picturesque fishing villages such as Winter Harbor.

Lunch: Picnic lunch at Schoodic Point, a spectacular headland that juts into the Gulf of Maine. Again, we'll choose from a variety of sandwich offerings.

Afternoon: After rounding Schoodic Point, we'll head through the conifer forests and will wind through rustic areas of Down East Maine. We'll end up in the quaint town of Corea, where time seems to stand still. After our return to Bar Harbor and a time for rest, one of our naturalists will be the guide on a comfortable walk along the Otter Cliffs section, filling us in on geology, natural history and marine environment.

Dinner: Before hearing from a lobster expert about Maine’s most famous crustacean, we’ll have an old-fashioned Down East shore feast. We'll start with a cup of clam chowder, then wej'll have boiled lobster served with drawn butter; boiled red potatoes; cole slaw; rolls and butter; dessert; and beverage.

Evening: A lobster expert will demonstrate, using authentic gear and live lobsters, how Maine’s most famous sea creatures are caught and what the future of the industry looks like.

Morning: Our final biking day will find us pedaling along Somes Sound, the only fjord on the east coast of North America. We'll cycle along Sargent Drive, in the shadow of Norumbega Mountain, and we'll have wonderful views across the fjord to the seldom-visited Acadia Mountain and St. Sauveur Mountain.

Lunch: Our Road Scholar week will come to an end as we enjoy a picnic lunch at Albert Meadow; take part in a brief “graduation” ceremony; and savor our memories of a week on the magnificent Maine coast.
