Day One: Thursday, April 11 - Check-In & Orientation/Welcome at the Cottage Hou...
Check-In & Orientation/Welcome at the Cottage House Inn. Meet the Road Scholar coordinators and the folks behind the scenes who are responsible for Ibsenfest.

Afternoon: Arrive in Lanesboro and check into Cottage House Inn. Pick up Road Scholar packets from 3:30 - 4:30 pm. At 4:30 pm we will meet for introductions and to review the schedule for the program.

Dinner: 5:45 pm - Dinner in a local restaurant.

Evening: 7:00 pm: First class period, Welcome to Lanesboro and the Commonweal and Ibsenfest. Meet some of the people in charge of the Ibsenfest and learn about how and why it got started.

Day Two: Friday, April 12 - Classes will begin your understanding of the curr...
Classes will begin your understanding of the current play and you will be able to participate in Ibsenfest activities.

Breakfast: Breakfast at Cottage House Inn.

Morning: Classes will introduce you to the play production process from the director and, designers. To understand Ibsen's works one must consider the social issues of the day and the complexity of human relationships. These factors influence how the production is staged to a great extent.

Lunch: Lunch in Lanesboro.

Afternoon: Ibsenfest activities, and/or programs about the play or Ibsen, himself. You will also have free time in the afternoon to explore Lanesboro or attend optional events. You may want to walk or bike the Root River State Trail which meanders amid 300-foot bluffs and along the peaceful Root River. The trail system loasts over 60 miles of paved surface. Bike rentals are readily available. Canoeing or Kayaking are also possible activities.

Dinner: Dinner in Lanesboro.

Evening: There is usually a musical program featuring Norweigan folk music.

Day Three: Saturday, April 13 - Guest lecturers who are Ibsen scholars are featur...
Guest lecturers who are Ibsen scholars are featured as part of Ibsenfest. Various arts and crafts will be demonstrated along with samples of Norwegian foods. The premier of this year's Ibsenfest play will be presented in the evening.

Breakfast: Breakfast at Cottage House Inn.

Morning: Class sessions will focus on Ibsen and his works. Visiting professors will be featured. Free time will permit your attendance at a variety of Ibsenfest events.

Lunch: Lunch in Lanesboro.

Afternoon: Ibsenfest activities will continue during the afternoon and will include special presentations. You will also be given free time to further explore Lanesboro and Ibsen events.

Dinner: Dinner in Lanesboro.

Evening: Attend the premier of this year's Ibsen play. You are also invited to an opening night post-show reception.

Day Four: Sunday, April 14 - Optional Norwegian/English Lutheran Church Servic...
Optional Norwegian/English Lutheran Church Service. Visit the Vesterheim Museum in Decorah, Iowa. It is the most comprehensive museum in the U.S. dedicated to a single immigrant group and houses over 24,000 artifacts.

Breakfast: Breakfast at Cottage House Inn.

Morning: Optional Norwegian/English Lutheran worship service.

Lunch: Have lunch in Decorah, IA before touring the museum.

Afternoon: Field trip to Decorah, IA for a guided visit of the Vesterheim Museum. Examine the artifacts treasured by the Norwegian immigrants and learn their stories as they left Norway to settle in this area. Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum embodies the living heritage of Norwegian immigrants to America. Sharing this cultural legacy can inspire people of all backgrounds to celebrate tradition. With 16 historic buildings in its main complex, which occupies most of a square block in downtown Decorah, Iowa, Vesterheim houses over 24,000 artifacts, which include large samplings from the fine, decorative, and folk arts, and the tools and machinery of early agriculture, lumbering, and other immigrant industries.

Evening: An optional video relating to Ibsen or Norwegian immigaration will be shown.

Day Five: Monday, April 15 - Hear first-hand stories about the Amish settlemen...
Hear first-hand stories about the Amish settlements in sourtheast Minnesota. Learn about Life in Lanesboro and the transformation of this small, rural villeage into a thriving arts community. Tour the theatre and have a social with the actors.

Breakfast: Breakfast at Cottage House Inn.

Morning: Classes on the Amish culture in southeastern Minnesota and the civic and community life in Lanesboro. Lanesboro is recognized as a model in the midwest because of its transformation from a declining town to a vibrant community with a diverse economy based on agriculture, manufacturing, tourism and the arts. Then listen to stories about the Amish side of Lanesboro and imagine living back in time where the horse and buggy still provide transportation and homes are lighted by kerosene lamps.

Lunch: Lunch at Lanesboro restaurant.

Afternoon: Additional class, theatre tour and free time. Visit with the actors about their roles in the Ibsen production and enjoy an informal reception with the Commonweal company.

Dinner: Farewell dinner in local establishment.

Evening: Evening free for socializing and getting ready for next-day departure.
