Equipment Requirements
Ski equipment and snowshoes will be provided. Winter clothing will be required including hats, gloves, scarves, winter boots, and wicking socks. Please be sure to bring multiple layers of clothing. Bottom layers should include either polypropylene, capalene, or spandex. Mid layer should be a fleece or wool. Top layer should act as a wind proof layer or water proof layer such as wind stopper or gore-tex. Please be sure to avoid using cotton or cotton blends. A full list of clothing will be sent out in the welcome packet.

Description: Located in the pristine forests at the base of Slide Mountain, the Frost Valley YMCA features nearly 7,000 acres of meadows, ponds, cascading waterfalls, and world-renowned trout streams, creating an idyllic background. The East Valley Lodge at Frost Valley is a lovely renovated home situated in a beautiful field just a few feet from the East Branch of the Neversink River. The East Valley Lodge deck, right off the dining room, looks directly over the Neversink River.

This renovated turn-of-the-century estate features small active programs, tastefully furnished, comfortable rooms with private baths, and outstanding wellness cuisine. Day One: Sunday, January 27 - Check-in/Orientation
Afternoon: Check-in begins at 4:00 PM in Straus Center dining room.

Dinner: Conclude the day's travel with warm welcome to the East Valley Lodge and a delicious selection of wholesome entrees. Dinners may include salmon steaks, tofu milano, or other tasteful choices. Side dishes may consist of garlic mashed potatoes, rice pilaf, tortellini, or sauteed fresh vegetables. Enjoy coffee, homemade desserts and conversation around one of our three fireplaces.

Evening: Introductions and an orientation to the Straus Center and the week's Road Scholar program.

Day Two: Monday, January 28 - Snowshoeing
Breakfast: Fireside breakfast served in East Valley Lodge dining room.

Morning: Become acquainted with winter's fastest growing form of outdoor recreation. You will find that snowshoeing is simply a modified form of walking. Begin to get comfortable climbing and hiking in these slightly awkward winter shoes.

Lunch: Lunch will consist of healthy wellness cuisine prepared to replenish your active body's needs. Homemade soups, complete salad bar and light deserts are provided daily.

Afternoon: Continue building familiarity with your snowshoe skills as we take a leisurely guided walk along any of our myriad of private, wooded trails. In addition to being an excellent source of aerobic exercise, showshoeing allows an outstanding opportunity to catch a glimpse of the Catskill Mountains' diverse array of winter wildlife.

Dinner: Conclude the day's activity with a hot meal at the East Valley Lodge. Enjoy coffee, homemade desserts and conversation around one of our three fireplaces.

Evening: On-site evening presentations in our cozy living room often include an array of topics ranging from local history or environmental education, to instructional videos and local performances.

Day Three: Tuesday, January 29 - Cross-County Skiing
Breakfast: Fireside breakfast served in East Valley Lodge dining room.

Morning: Our morning session will consist of an introduction to cross country ski equipment and professional instruction. Participants will become familiar with ski terminology, skiing technique as well as falling and recovery skills.

Lunch: Guests will be provided with a diverse variety of food selections to assemble their own picnic lunch.

Afternoon: Continue to hone and master your newly acquired Nordic ski skills. Spend the afternoon exploring the East Valley Lodge's property on skis utilizing our own private network of both tracked and untracked trails.

Dinner: Conclude the day with a delicious selection of wholesome entrees. Enjoy coffee, homemade deserts and conversation around one of our three stone fireplaces.

Evening: Enjoy your evening doing as much or as little as you choose. Challenge a friend to a game of scrabble, read a book, start a puzzle or simply relax in one of our deep couches while watching the flickering fire.

Morning: Take a van ride over to Frost Valley's main campus to explore our wonderful snowshoe trails . Begin to understand the vast geographic and natural diversity found here at Frost Valley's 6000 plus acre preserve on snowshoes. Explore areas like Banks Hill, Biscuit Creek, and Devil's Hole.

Lunch: Guests will be provided with a diverse variety of food selections to assemble their own picnic lunch.

Afternoon: Spend the afternoon continuing to explore the natural surroundings on snowshoes.

Dinner: Conclude the day' with an evening meal at the East Valley Lodge. Enjoy coffee, homemade desserts and conversation around one of our three fireplaces.

Evening: On-site evening presentations in our cozy living room often include an array of topics ranging from local history or environmental education, to instructional videos and local performances.

Day Five: Thursday, January 31 - Cross Country Skiing
Breakfast: Fireside breakfast served in East Valley Lodge dining room.

Morning: Continue to develop your cross country skiing skills as we hit the trails around Straus. Large open fields and trails through the forests provide enough challenge for beginner or intermediate skiers.

Lunch: Lunch will consist of healthy wellness cuisine prepared to replenish your active body's needs.

Afternoon: Continue to explore and navigate your way through our extensive trail system located over at Frost Valley's main campus.

Dinner: Conclude the day' with an evening meal at the East Valley Lodge. Enjoy coffee, homemade desserts and conversation around one of our three fireplaces.

Evening: Enjoy a review of the week's activities through a slideshow of photos taken by staff members and guests alike.

Day Six: Friday, February 01 -
Breakfast: Fireside breakfast served in East Valley Lodge dining room.

Morning: Explore the East Valley Lodge's private trail network on your choice of cross-country skiis or snowshoes.

Lunch: Guests will be provided with a diverse variety of food selections to assemble their own bagged lunch to provide ultimate flexibility in traveling plans.

Afternoon: Check out and goodbyes to follow lunch
