Note: Welcome to our Road Scholar Program. We have been offering this program since 1996 and do so proudly. This afternoon we will take you on a walking tour of the lovely Mount campus en route to a welcome dinner. Following dinner we will have an orientation going over the schedule for the week to come.

Afternoon: Check-in is between 2-4 p.m. It is followed by a tour of the campus.

Dinner: Welcome dinner

Evening: Following dinner there will be a welcome and orientation followed by a film about the Roosevelts.

Morning: We will tour Val-Kill this morning to be followed by a film and home tour back at Springwood. FDR encouraged Eleanor Roosevelt to develop this property as a place that she could develop some of her ideas for work with winter jobs for rural workers and women. She named the spot Val-Kill, loosely translated as waterfall-stream from the Dutch language common to the original settlers of the area. Throughout her husband's presidency, she often stayed at Val-Kill. After his death, she lived there for 17 years. Val-Kill is the first National Historic Site devoted to a First Lady. Springwood is 2 miles west of Val-Kill and is the beloved Roosevelt family home. We will go to Springwood and view a film and tour the home.

Afternoon: There will be a special program at Hyde Park by one of the educators there. The FDR site has outstanding educational specialists who will offer unique and interesting lectures to our group. Following the program we will spend time in the Wallace Center.

Evening: There will either be a class or special presentation tonight.

Afternoon: This afternoon is all yours! There are many places to avail yourself of for an afternoon of free time. West Point is 20 minutes from campus. Walk the Walkway over the Hudson. Browse a historical Hudson River mansion. Enjoy the downtown areas of Beacon or Cold Spring. When you arrive we provide directions from the campus to several local sites and will be happy to help you plan this afternoon for you to enjoy the Hudson River Valley on your own.

Hudson River Cruise You've enjoyed the viewfrom the residence hall now enjoy the cruise! You will see West Point from the water as well as Bannerman's Castle, built not as a home but as an arsenal for Mr. Bannerman's immense collection of weapons.

Note: The Hudson River is a 315 mile watercourse that flows from north to south. It begins at Lake Tear of the Clouds in the Adirondack Mountains, flows past the state capital at Albany, and eventually forms the boundary between New York City and New Jersey. Because its current changes four times every day as ocean tides pulse upriver to the Troy dam, it is also called the "river that flows both ways." The river is named after Henry Hudson who explored it in 1690.

Afternoon: Enjoy a cruise on the majestic Hudson after lunch.

Note: The FDR Library is built of Hudson Valley fieldstone in the style reminiscent of the local Dutch colonial architecture which FDR favored. It was built with privately donated funds and then turned over to the federal government on July 4, 1940 to be operated by the National Archives.

Morning: Today we will take tours of the Library & Museum and Top Cottage. We will visit Hyde Park for a special program. Following the program half the group will take the Library & Museum Tour and half will go to Top Cottage. We will alternate tours so everyone will see both sites. Top Cottage was constructed in 1938 during FDR's second term in office. The small stone cottage served as his private country retreat for the rest of his presidency. It embodies the President's strong interest in the early history and architecture of the Hudson Valley. Top Cottage is the most poignant and personal reminder of his private life.

Afternoon: Tours of the Library & Museum and Top Cottage will continue this afternoon.

Dinner: Dinner will be on campus.

Evening: In the evening we will have our farewell party.

Note: The Hudson River School was a mid-19th century American art movement embodied by a group of landscape painters whose aesthetic vision was influenced by romanticism. The paintings for which the movement is named depict the HR Valley and the surrounding area and reflect three themes: discovery, exploration, and settlement. The landscapes are characterized by their realistic, detailed, and sometimes idealized portrayal of nature. After being in the area for a week we know you'll enjoy the view!
