Afternoon: HOTEL CHECK-IN: Check into LA Downtown Hotel after 3:00pm.

PROGRAM REGISTRATION: After you have your room assignment, come over to the Road Scholar table to register with the program staff and pick up your arrival packet which we'll review during our orientation session before dinner.

ORIENTATION: Begins before dinner. We'll have an overview of the program ahead and review the up-to-date schedule, responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, any other administrative issues, and answer your questions. Please be aware that local circumstances may require adjusting program elements. In the event of changes, we will notify you as quickly as possible. We appreciate your understanding.

Dinner: Dinner at hotel

Menus are contracted for the program and are designed to offer balanced, healthy meals for the participants.

Evening: CROSSING POINTS: Participants introduce themselves to the rest of the group.

Enjoy the remainder of the evening getting to know your fellow participants and discovering what you share beyond a love of lifelong learning.

Note: LACMA has six buildings containing the art on display. The art in each building is displayed on one to three floors in an area about two blocks long. The hour long guided docent walk is in one building and includes art on three floors. Elevators are available.

Morning: CLASS: 'Capital, Culture and Collecting: Huntington, Getty, Simon and Los Angeles Museum Building' gives a historical context to the personalities, financial acumen, and collecting passions of Henry Huntington, J. Paul Getty, Norton Simon, and Charles Lummis.

FIELD TRIP: After class, motorcoach departs hotel for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Lunch: Lunch on your own at Los Angeles County Museum of Art

Afternoon: Enjoy a private, docent-led walk of the permanent exhibits of the Ahmanson Building, the original building of the museum complex. Afterwards, explore the museum and grounds on your own or join a public tour.

Dinner: Dinner at hotel.

Evening: PRESENTATION: DVD: 'Concert of Wills: Making the Getty Center' traces the building of the Getty Center, one of the most ambitious cultural undertakings of the 20th century.The gathering of creative personalities needed to complete the monumental complex gave rise to conflict as well as consensus, to tension as well as resolution.

Note: The Getty Center art collection is displayed in four buildings, three of which have two floors; the fourth building has three floors. There may be temporary exhibits in two other buildings. Optional guided docent walks of art, architecture or gardens last about an hour. Elevators are available. The amount of walking is determined by interest level. Access to the Getty Garden involves a slight incline.

Morning: CLASS: 'J. Paul Getty and His Collection' introduces the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center in Los Angeles which houses European paintings, drawings, sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, decorative arts, and European and American photographs.

FIELD TRIP: After class, the motorcoach departs the hotel for the Getty Center.

Afternoon: The Getty Center presents the Getty's collection of Western art from the Middle Ages to the present against a backdrop of dramatic architecture, tranquil gardens, and breathtaking views. Explore the museum and grounds on your own or join one of the public tours.

Evening: CLASS: Historic Los Angeles

The history of Los Angeles, one of the oldest cities in the United States, begins with its founding by the Spanish government as a town in 1781, eight years before George Washington became the first president of the United States and 22 years before the Louisiana Purchase.

A successful farming community under the flags of Spain, Mexico and the United States, Los Angeles grew to become the second largest city in the United States. While the session discusses the basic facts of the city's founding and growth, the emphasis on is on the reasons and motivations that created the present city.

Note: All art on display at the Norton Simon is in one building with two floors. An elevator is available. There is a private hour and a half long guided docent walk upon arrival. Many sculptures are outside and can be viewed from a walking path.

Morning: CLASS: 'Norton Simon, The Collector' introduces Norton Simon and his collection of 14th through 20th century European art and art of the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia.

FIELD TRIP: After class, the motorcoach departs the hotel for the Norton Simon Museum.

Enjoy a private docent-led walk of the Norton Simon Museum.You will have time to explore the collections and the sculpture garden on your own. Like Monet’s Giverny, the garden at the Norton Simon Museum is a living work of art providing tranquil and inspirational surroundings for the Museum and its visitors. Many come to sketch the attractive landscaping and featured sculptures or simply relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

Afternoon: Explore the museum and grounds on your own, view museum films, or purchase an audio tour.

Evening: PRESENTATION: DVD: Five short films about The Huntington’s Art, Gardens and Library

Note: At the Huntington, the art collection is in four buildings and there are 14 principal garden areas around the buildings. The grounds are over 200 acres with some inclines. Elevators are available in the buildings. The amount of walking is determined by interest level.

Morning: CLASS: 'Arabella and Henry Huntington Collectors' introduces the Huntington as an oasis of art and culture set amidst 207 acres of breathtaking gardens. Three art galleries and a library showcase magnificent collections of rare books and manuscripts, 18th and 19th century British and French art and 18th through 20th century American art.

FIELD TRIP: After class, the motorcoach departs the hotel for the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens. Explore the collection and gardens on your own. Complimentary audio guides are available for the Huntington Art Gallery and the Virginia Steele Scott Galleries of American Art.

Morning: CLASS: 'The Week in Review: How Los Angeles Museums Measure Up' wraps up the week by reviewing the experience program participants had during their week of site visits.

CLASS: 'In Our Care: Fundamentals of Museum Object Management' provides a basic primer on how museums generally manage their collections.
