Description: Nestled in 100 acres of peaceful woodland, Black Rock Retreat is located in picturesque Southern Lancaster County, PA.and is surrounded by Amish farmland. Begun 50 years ago by the vision of a local Mennonite leader, Black Rock has grown from a small summer camp to a year-round facility which offers peaceful, comfortable accommodations to many various groups. The Road Scholar program is held in the beautiful and modern Maranatha Retreat Center. You will have time to explore the hiking trails which lead to our "Lake in the Woods" or the Octorara Creek. Also available for your use is a gymnasium and plenty of comfortable seating by a fireplace.

Facility amenities: Black Rock Retreat welcomes Participants in the Maranatha Retreat Center which includes an inviting lobby area which hosts two stone fireplaces and access to a large deck. Also located in the retreat center are the spacious meeting rooms for sessions, dining area and lodging rooms. The motel style rooms offer private baths. Delicious buffet-style meals are prepared by our food service staff and served in our airy dining room or sunny deck overlooking woods. Day One: Sunday, September 15 - Check in and registration/Orientation 
Afternoon: Registration and welcome in retreat center lobby.

Dinner: Dinner is a buffet-style meal served in the Maranatha Retreat Center Dining Room. Our guests will meet in the lobby for instructions. Our goal is to serve our guests healthy and delicious food featuring local tastes and recipes.

Evening: ORIENTATION/GETTING TO KNOW YOU: Beginning at 7:15PM in our private meeting room we'll have an overview of the program ahead and review the up-to-date schedule, responsibilities, safety, guidelines, emergency procedures, and any other administrative issues. Please be aware that local circumstances may require adjusting program elements. In the event of changes we will notify you as quickly as possible via the SPI. We appreciate your understanding. We will also spend some time becoming better acquainted with participants and program staff. Find out what you have in common beyond a love of learning! The session will be followed by an ice cream sundae bar set up in the retreat center dining room with plenty of time to relax and prepare for the full day of activity and learning ahead.

Day Two: Monday, September 16 - "Following the Octorara Trail" tour. Catch glimpses of the... 
"Following the Octorara Trail" tour. Catch glimpses of the interactions among African, European and Native Americans in Lancaster County from the 16th to the 19th century.

Breakfast: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.

Morning: Travel on a charter bus for "Following the Octorara Trail" tour (in association with the Mennonite Historical Society). Day possibly includes the Hans Herr House Museum. The 1719 Hans Herr House, built in that year by Hans' son Christian, is the oldest surviving dwelling place of European settlers in what is now Lancaster County, PA. It is the oldest still-standing Mennonite meeting house in the Western Hemisphere. Also included will be seeing sites involved in the Underground Railroad.

Lunch: Boxed lunch provided during the tour.

Afternoon: Continuing with the "Following the Octorara Trail" tour on charter bus with step-on guides.

Dinner: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.

Evening: Lecture on Native Americans in Lancaster County.

Day Three: Tuesday, September 17 - Excursion to Downtown Lancaster City and Landis Valley Museum 
Breakfast: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.

Morning: Leave on charter bus for Downtown Lancaster City. Our day will possibly include a walking tour of the city as well as Demuth Museum and historic Lancaster Central Market.

Lunch: Lunch on your own in Lancaster City.

Afternoon: Learning continues by possibly visiting James Buchanan's Wheatland and the interesting Landis Valley Museum.

Dinner: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.

Evening: Popular speaker and local theologian Brinton Rutherford will lecture "Quakers In Our Midst" - history and present day beliefs.

Morning: "The Radical Reformation - Then and Now" lecture by Brinton Rutherford about the Amish and Mennonites.

Lunch: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.

Afternoon: Free time.

Dinner: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.

Evening: PBS film showing - Amish: People of Preservation followed by opportunity to make (and eat) your own soft pretzel.

Day Five: Thursday, September 19 - Lititz Moravian Church tour/Ephrata Cloisters tour 
Breakfast: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.

Morning: Leave on bus for Lititz Moravian Church guided tour.

Lunch: Boxed lunch.

Afternoon: See a glimpse of this interesting part of Lancaster's history as we are guided around the Ephrata Cloisters. Also included will be a stop at an Amish farm and gift shop operated by a charming and welcoming Old Order Amish family.

Dinner: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.

Evening: Amish/Mennonite lecture

Day Six: Friday, September 20 -
