There was first a rough-planked structure in this location, followed years later by a building containing private bathing cubicles (see photo's in the hotel lobby). Day Two: Wednesday, February 13 - A history of the desert field trip that includes...
A history of the desert field trip that includes a visit to the famous Indian Canyons. A guest lecture by a local naturalist on the flora and fauna of the desert.

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: HISTORY OF THE DESERT - Learn about the mineral waters and history of the area through a lecture with a local historian. . Following the morning lecture, depart for a field trip to discover first hand the beauty and the history of the desert, including a visit to the Indian Canyons. Centuries ago, ancestors of the Agua Caliente Cahuilla (pronounced Kaw-we-ah) Indians settled in the Palm Springs area and developed extensive and complex communities in what is now known as the Indian Canyons. Many traces of these communities exist in the canyons today, including rock art, reservoirs and trails. Admire the natural beauty of the canyons and soak in centuries of culture from an in-depth historical discussion of the area.

Lunch: Lunch on the field trip

Afternoon: Field trip continues with visits to n, the Holocaust Memorial and the Windmills. See, hear and learn about the history of each site in detail. Not only will you learn through lecture, you’ll also learn through experience and expertise! Time permitting, we will view some celebrity homes and modernistic homes while on the bus.

Afternoon: WATER EXERCISE - Cool down and relax after the walk through downtown with simple water exercises.

Dinner: Dinner Buffet in the Casino restaurant located across the street from the hotel.

Evening: DESERT FLORA AND FAUNA LECTURE - The many ecosystems of our canyons and mountains support a rich diversity of animal life such as the Coyote, Mountain Lion, Desert Bighorn Sheep, Bobcat, Kit Fox, Golden Eagle, Roadrunner, Cactus Wren, and Desert Tortoise, and plant life such as the California Fan Palm, the Barrel Cactus, and the Yucca Tree. Discover how these diverse plants and animals rely on each other for food and shelter in some pretty unique ways, and learn about the complex systems they create to support each other and the environment they share.

Evening: Open/on your own - Take in the Famous Palm Springs Follies at 7:30PM and mention CELS for our special discount (at your own expense).The Follies is a world-famous, Broadway-caliber celebration of the music, dance, and comedy of the 30's,40's, 50's, 60's, with a cast old enough to have lived it. Valentine's Day - be sure to wear red or pink. Relaxing chair yoga, cuisine class, fitness center, a walk-about of downtown Palm Springs and an informative heart healthy lecture.

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: HEART SMART LECTURE - Enjoy a lecture led by a cardiac nurse educator. Learn about and discuss some cardiac statistics and their health ramifications. Learn the cardiac warning signs and how to recognize a stroke for women and men. Discuss exercise and healthy eating as some of the possible ways to help maintain a healthy heart, and take this knowledge home with you to implement it in everyday life.

Morning: CHAIR YOGA - Chair yoga promotes total wellness to every part of your body, improves your ability to twist, bend and move around, e and generally improve basic fitness. Instructors adapt almost any yoga pose to the chair, so students gain the same benefits as the floor or standing varieties, including improved flexibility. After stretching and strengthening through chair yoga poses, your body and mind can experience a release of stress and tension.

Lunch: CUISINE CLASS - Prepare your own lunch with our executive chef. Easy to prepare recipes; soup, au d'oeuvres and dessert will be demonstrated. And you will enjoy the meal prepared for your lunch.

Afternoon: SCENIC WALK OF PALM SPRINGS - View some iconic locations in scenic downtown Palm Springs. Get up close and personal with the 26-foot tall “Forever Marilyn” sculpture, and even see Marilyn’s Golden Palm Star in the Palm Springs Walk of Stars - similar to the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. Then we’ll stop at the Village Green Heritage Center, and visit two 19th century pioneer homes. The McCallum Adobe, which is the oldest remaining building in Palm Springs, features an extensive collection of photographs, paintings, clothing, tools, books and Indian ware from the earliest days of Palm Springs. The second house, Miss Cornelia's "Little House," is constructed of railroad ties and is furnished with antiques donated by local residents.

Afternoon: FITNESS CENTER - Exercise is nature's best mood booster. A fitness expert teaches you how to use the state of the art equipment in the Fitness Center. The on site facility has equipment for strength training and cardiovascular exercise, such as free weights, Olympic benches treadmills and even the latest in fitness equipment - the Functional Trainer. Learn about the equipment, pick your favorite, and get your body moving to stretch out those ligaments and strengthen those muscles!

Dinner: Dinner on your own to enjoy one of 400 area restaruants.

Evening: Evening open to attend the Palm Springs Village Fest from 6-10PM; over 100 vendors, art, produce, 1-of-a-kind gift items, food booths and open air cafes. The Palm Springs Art Museum is free from 4-8PM. Established in 1938, the Palm Springs Art Museum has become the center of the desert's art community. What began as a museum about the desert has evolved into an oasis for the arts, focusing on international Modern and Contemporary painting and sculpture. The museum also includes works by historically significant west coast artists as well as contemporary Native American artists.

Palm Springs Aerial TramAscend two and a half miles to a pristine wilderness aboard the World’s Largest Rotating Tramcars. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway constructed in rugged Chino Canyon on the north edge of Palm Springs - about two hours by car from Los Angeles and San Diego - did not just happen. It required foresight, planning, financing and, most of all a vision. For years, it was the dream of a young electrical engineer named Francis F. Crocker to "go up there where it's nice and cool". Be sure to see the film they show. Hours of Operation Tram cars depart at least every half hour from 10 a.m., Monday – Friday; 8 a.m. weekends and holiday periods.
