Day Three: Tuesday, September 10 - Lake Tahoe Field Trip with on-board instructor
Breakfast: Expanded continental breakfast in hotel restaurant.

Morning: We board a comfortable motor coach for the all-day field trip around the Lake. Lake Tahoe is the highest alpine lake in the U.S. and the second largest alpine lake in the world! Lake Tahoe has a surface elevation of 6,229 ft, is 22 miles long, 12 miles wide and has a shoreline 71 miles in length. With a surface area of 193 sq. mi., a maximum depth of 1,645 feet (making it the second deepest lake in the United States!) and an average depth of 989 feet, the total capacity of Lake Tahoe is 122,160,280 acre-ft (39 trillion gallons) of water!! Surface lake temperatures range from 68 ° F in the summer, to 41 ° F during the winter. The only outlet is the Truckee River at Tahoe City.

Lunch: Picnic lunch en route.

Afternoon: On our trip around the lake we'll visit Tahoe City to learn how the lake's water level is controlled, Squaw Valley, home to the 1960 Winter Olympics, Emerald Bay, one of the most photographed spots in the world, Taylor Creek Stream Profile Chamber and the Tallac Historic Site.In 1969, Emerald Bay was recognized as a National Natural Landmark by the federal Department of the Interior. In 1994, California State Parks included the surrounding water of the bay as a part of the park, making Emerald Bay one of the first underwater parks of its type in the state, protecting the various wrecks and other items on the bay's bottom. One of the most interesting things to do at Taylor Creek Visitor Center is take the short walk on the Rainbow Trail to the Stream Profile Chamber, where you can observe a section of Taylor Creek's stream bed and aquatic life. Tallac Historic Site, run by the U. S. Forest Service, contains three historic properties that once belonged to the Baldwin, Pope and Heller families. The houses, built between 1894 and 1923, offer a glimpse of the lifestyles of Tahoe's early rich and famous.

Dinner: Catered dinner in hotel meeting room.

Evening: We relax and enjoy an evening of musical entertainment.
