Arrival & Check-in/ Tour of Center Grounds/Dinner/Registration & Orientation, Introductions & Getting Acquainted

Note: We will enjoy a casual walking tour of the Center grounds. Participants should be able to walk down and up a short hill and stand for approximately 45 minutes.

Afternoon: ARRIVAL & CHECK-IN: Participants are welcome to arrive at the Center any time after 1:00pm.
REGISTRATION: From 3:00pm until 5:00pm. Meet the staff and pick up your arrival packet with the most up-to-date schedule that we’ll review during orientation.
SITE EXCURSION: At 5:00pm we'll gather together in the Taubman Conference Room for a casual walking excursion so you can become familiar with the Center grounds and facilities. The walk will last about 30 minutes and will be followed by dinner.

Dinner: Our first meal together will be dinner in Smith Hall, the Center's dining and administrative facility. The "all you can eat" buffet with salad, a main course, and dessert usually has people coming back oftentimes for more than seconds.

Evening: ORIENTATION: We'll begin promptly at 7:00pm. During the first 45 minutes of the session, we'll review the updated schedule, responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and any other administrative issues. There will be a brief presentation on the 4-H movement and a short film that provides a nice overview of the Smith Mountain Lake area.
After a short break, we'll reconvene for the "get acquainted" portion of the evening. Given past experience we should be through by 8:30pm, allowing you ample opportunity to continue getting to know one another and to rest up for the next day's activities.

Day Two: Tuesday, September 17 - Breakfast/American Antique Periods, Blue Ridge vs...
Breakfast/American Antique Periods, Blue Ridge vs. Virginia Low Country Regional Style/Lunch/ Booker T. Washington Field Trip/Boat Trip//Dinner/ Country Primitive Antiques

Note: Our short trip to and tour of Booker T. Washington's Birthplace will require walking a short distance on a paved walkway and standing for approximately 45 minutes. Our trip to the boat ride will take only 10 minutes via the Center van.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet in the dining hall is available at 7:30am. Choose from fare-of-the-day and/or a variety of fruits and cereals. The buffet line will be open until 8:15am.

Morning: PRESENTATION: From 8:45am until Noon, we'll explore various periods of American antiques. Specifically, we'll learn about contrasts between the Blue Ridge region settlement and regional style and the Virginia low country settlement style. The differences are quite striking and mirror the history, customs, and heritage of the settlers themselves.

Lunch: The lunch buffet is available from Noon until 12:45pm. Salad, entrée, dessert.

Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: We'll travel to the Booker T. Washington Birthplace and National Monument. We'll explore the early boyhood home of this native genius who rose from obscurity in slavery to become the founder of a respected academic institution, adviser to three Presidents, and a leading figure in the U.S. African American community from 1890 to 1915. The experience will also provide ample evidence of the styles of early Blue Ridge Mountain furniture and buildings as we visit the Burroughs plantation and outbuildings. Upon our return to the Center our instructor will provide a detailed debriefing of what we saw and learned on site. We'll then travel a short distance to the marina for our leisurely boat trip on the Lake.

Dinner: As on every evening, the dinner buffet is available at 5:30pm and includes salad, the main course, and dessert.

Evening: PRESENTATION & DISCUSSION: After dinner we'll examine and discuss examples of country primitive antiques.
EXTRACURRICULAR: Following your full and intellectually stimulating day, enjoy a change of pace with a light dramatic comedy "What About Bob?" filmed at Smith Mountain Lake. On our upcoming field trip to Poplar Forest, you'll be able to see a number of sites in the film - your chance to see how locations are chosen for major movies.

Breakfast/Virginia Plantation Antique Styles, 18th- & 19th-Century Antiques/Lunch/ Field Trips to Antique Shop & Jefferson's Poplar Forest/Dinner/ Evening Entertainment

Note: Our trips to an antique establishment and Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest will entail walking a short distance and standing for approximately one hour.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet available at 7:30am. Be sure to "eat hearty" since we'll be on the go for most of the day.

Morning: PRESENTATION: From 8:45am until mid-morning, we'll focus on Virginia plantation antique styles and an exhibition and examination of 18th- and 19th-Century antiques.
FIELD TRIP: We'll then board our transportation and make the short trip to a well-known, respected antique establishment near Forest, Virginia, where we'll examine some of the antique styles we've been discussing in class. From there, we'll move on to Thomas Jefferson's personal retreat, Poplar Forest, to learn about and experience Jefferson's architectural genius.

Lunch: Enjoy a picnic lunch on the grounds of Poplar Forest.

Afternoon: The field trip continues as our instructor leads us through Poplar Forest to point out and explain the various artifacts and furniture as well as the innovative building styles Jefferson utilized. Part architectural masterpiece, part engineering marvel and part work of art. Poplar Forest is more than Thomas Jefferson’s personal retreat. It is the living embodiment of his genius: blending landscape and architecture, the first octagonal home in America is one of only two homes he designed and built for his own use.
We'll return to the Center in time for dinner.

Dinner: Dinner buffet available at 5:30pm.

Evening: EXTRACURRICULAR: This evening's entertainment will leave you pleasantly surprised and mesmerized by the talent on display. Since you'll be traveling tomorrow, the show will conclude by 10:00pm.

PRESENTATION: Learn more about how to look critically at antiques for authenticity, how to detect repairs, replacements, and fakes. Get inside information on how to buy antiques at auctions, estate sales, and antique stores. We'll end with tips on how to care for and maintain your antique treasures.
