PRESENTATION: Dispelling Judaism's "Artless Tradition." Worldwide political changes in the 1800s and 1900s, produced a significant level of Secularization in the Yiddish speaking world. The move from a conservative, religious environment to a more open outlook created opportunities in Literature, Music, Theater, Movies and Painting. Part of the class will include elementary level listening and conversation exercises purely for entertainment.Lunch: Lunch at the hotel in our private meeting room.Afternoon: PRESENTATION: The Literature of a Dynasty: The Singer Family. The Singer family made up of Nobel Prize winner, Isaac Bashevis Singer (1902-1991), and his siblings—brother Israel Joshua Singer (1893–1944) and sister Esther Kreitman (1891–1954) were leading figures in the Yiddish literary movement which began in the 19th century. By the 20th Century, the family of authors drew from the most respected European Philosophers and Writers including Spinoza, Dostoyevsky, Turgenev, de Maupassant, and Chekhov, to create a large body of work that married the ancient moral commitments of Jewish traditions and beliefs and a modern literary style. FIELD TRIP: Board our bus for a full day of exploring at the Ringling Museum Complex. A local expert takes you through Ca' d'Zan, (house of John) the Ringlings' magnificent, 32-room Venetian-Gothic mansion. See "Tibbals Learning Center," featuring Howard Brothers Miniature Circus. Next see the Circus Museum displays of memorabilia and artifacts from the long and eventful history of the Ringling Bros.Lunch: Enjoy a luncheon at the Treviso, an Italian restaurant located on the museum grounds.Afternoon: Enjoy the architectural elements of the Art Museum, focus of the collection; Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces and the collecting style of John Ringling. Paolo Veronese is acknowledged as one of the giants of Venetian Renaissance painting. His artistic production was richly varied, extending from imposing altarpieces to smaller religious paintings for private clients, from grand portraits to sensual episodes drawn from the classical tradition. Veronese was also an outstanding draughtsman, and his graphic oeuvre ranged from preliminary sketches to highly finished chiaroscuro sheets. A foreigner in Venice, he created paintings for Venetian clients and settings, as well for the mainland and export abroad. Thus, Veronese's art was unusually versatile for its time.
This magnificent exhibition will display this extraordinary versatility and examine Veronese's artistic practice, concentrating on works from North American collections. For a sixteenth-century painter, many of whose works are in fresco or on enormous canvases still in situ, Veronese is unusually broadly represented in North America. At the same time, the broad spectrum of Veronese as a painter and draughtsman has not been available to American audiences in over two decades. This exhibition is a major contribution to Veronese studies. Focusing attention on both little-known works as well as acknowledged masterpieces, it will discuss Veronese's complicated chronology, his artistic process, technical discoveries, and issues of attribution, as well as exploring his depictions of sumptuous fabrics in his paintings.Dinner: Walk or hotel shuttle will take you to St. Armands Circle, renowned as a continental marketplace. Some say this is because the instrument replicates the human voice in all its moods—it can cry, sing, laugh, and sigh. Violins can capture emotions of sentimentality and penetrating power that are difficult to express with words alone. Learn more about violin virtuosos such as Itzhak Perlman, Isaac Stern, Jascha Heifetz, Yehudi Menuhi, and Joshua Bell, among many others, are world renowned. In the United States, the theater and movie industry, which was dominated by Jewish immigrants, produced screen plays that focused on Jewish Ideals: devotion to family, deep and abiding love for mothers, sincere patriotism, and tolerance toward the underdog in society. The universal immigrant experience of outsiders looking into a greater world that was not theirs for the taking. Learn how this created a unique opportunity for writers who searched for a way to unify a new world of foreigners who were becoming Americans.
